Tommy Wellington, 84, of the 5500 block of Fayetteville Road in Lumberton, died of injuries at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center shortly after the accident on N. C. 211, the Highway Patrol said. Wellington and his wife, Joyce, were passengers in a Buick driven by his son, James Douglas Wellington, 55, that was hit head-on by a Chevrolet Avalanche truck, a Highway Patrol spokesman said. Joyce Wellington was pronounced dead at the scene and James Wellington died at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital. Tommy Wellington served a total of 18 years 7 months as years as a community college trustee, according to an RCC spokesman. Wellington, a farmer and businessman, was first appointed by the Robeson County commissioners and served from July 1990 to June 1994. In June 2000, then-Gov. "The Robeson Community College family is deeply saddened by the loss of Mr. Tommy Wellington and his wife and son," Dr. Pamela Hilbert, college president, said in an emailed statement. Wellington served many years on the Board of Trustees of the college. In February 2005, the Robeson County commissioners appointed Wellington to finish the term of the late Gary Powers, representing District 6. Civil trial over Border Patrol shooting begins - Arizona Daily Star

A civil trial is underway in federal court over the 2011 deadly shooting of a U. S. citizen in Douglas by a Border Patrol agent. The family of Carlos LaMadrid, 19, is suing the federal government for an unspecified amount for what it considers to be unjustified and excessive use of force. The attorneys for LaMadrid’s mother, Guadalupe Guerrero , argued Monday before U. S. District Judge James Soto that Border Patrol agent Lucas Tidwell shot LaMadrid at close range when he was climbing a ladder back to Mexico. “It’s not disputed that Tidwell shot and killed LaMadrid by four shots to his back as he was climbing the ladder propped up against the international fence,” said attorney Bill Risner. And there’s ample evidence to prove it, he said, including radio calls, videotapes, independent witnesses, LaMadrid’s cellphone and the rocks thrown at the agent.
