2012 BMW 335i Sedan - Car and Driver

If you’re like us, you’ve bored holes through pictures of the new 3-series sedan trying to discern the styling changes versus the outgoing model. A new face features headlights that puddle in toward the chrome-wrapped kidneys and a broad, blunt-faced front bumper that creates a sort of grimacing overbite into the lower grille. Move around to the sides and tail, and it all looks very familiar, even though the new car is 1. 9 inches longer in wheelbase and 3. 7 inches longer overall, which gives it more of a sleek, sprinter-on-blocks profile. Well, after 600 miles in a brand-new 2012 F30-generation 335i Sport Line—and a couple of plates of South Carolina barbecue—we have a pretty good idea. The wheelbase punch-out creates a few more cubic feet here and there, most noticeably in the back seat with its extra head and knee room, plus some subtle tactile difference in the steering, no doubt due to the switch to electric assist (more on... With BMW's monolithic engineering focus, I've found it easy to be impressed with the company's cars. Even in the age of road-holding electronics, BMW implemented them so as to still let the driver throw the rear end out to a degree. That was my mindset as I eagerly got behind the wheel of the 2012 BMW 335i, but even before starting up the engine I noticed something was wrong. Looking to the instrument cluster for some relief, I was horrified to discover that even the gauge faces were beige, or Oyster in BMW terminology. Adding insult to injury, BMW also attached a few heavily textured pieces, ostensibly real wood but with a very plastic feel, around the cabin as trim pieces. When putting the car through the kinds of paces that exercised its torsional rigidity, that plastic groaned and creaked, making the whole car feel a bit cheap. BMW recently trifurcated its 3 Series into Sport, Modern, and Luxury trim lines. The interior-design horror movie represented by this car was the result of a few injudicious choices in the Modern line, such as the Fineline Pure trim pieces. Source: www.cnet.com

2012 BMW 335i Sedan review notes. EDITOR WES RAYNAL: This 2012 BMW 335i sedan is a pricey little bugger. On all but the smoothest pavement, the ride is harsh and slams over road imperfections, even in comfort mode. BMW's run-flat program is not good--witness our troubles with the long-term 550i xDrive. Other than that, I like the engine's flexibility, smoothness and power, and the gearbox is decent, though the throws seem a little long. The engine is everything we've come to expect from BMW's 3. 0-liter turbocharged six. The eco mode slows everything down, most notably throttle response. Comfort seems to speed up the throttle, and sport lets everything cut loose a bit. In any mode, the car feels solid and stable and the steering is as one expects from BMW--accurate and stable. Not too much to get you in trouble, or burn gallon after gallon of gas, but if you need a little boost to pass or get off the line, the Bimmer's got your back. As opposed to Wes, I thought the ride in comfort mode was completely livable. Granted it's no Mercedes-Benz S-class , but it's not supposed to be. Sport mode, on the other hand, really buttons the car down, and that's where road imperfections come through. Source: autoweek.com
