2011 BMW 335i Sedan - First Drive Review - Car and Driver

For the 2009 model year, the BMW 3-series sedan and wagon received a minor face lift that included new front and rear lights and a modified trunklid, grille, and front bumper. BMW has made two other, more significant changes to the 3-series lineup for 2011, introducing the sportier 320-hp 335is and adopting a new 3. 0-liter turbocharged engine in all 335i models except the 335is. Called the N55, this inline six-cylinder... ) BMW has said it is holding off on producing higher-output versions of the brand-new N55 because it has confidence in the durability of the N54 to raise the boost for more horsepower. The N55 is notable because it marries direct fuel injection, turbocharging, and Valvetronic variable valve lift for the first time on a BMW inline-six. The exhaust gas pulses from the front and back of the engine are fed separately to the two scrolls of the single turbo, thus minimizing lag because there’s no delay in spooling up. As a result, the new engine delivers its 300 lb-ft of torque at... The car’s 300 hp, delivered at 5800 rpm, also is unchanged from that of the N54. There’s no improvement in the 335i’s performance, with BMW claiming a 0-to-60-mph time for the manual model of 5. 4 seconds and 5. 6 seconds for the automatic. Source: www.caranddriver.com

S. as just an ordinary 3-series, and as such, there’s room for something more exotic than a 335i but less outlandish than an M3. Now that we’ve been... To that end, the 335is gets 320 hp and 332 lb-ft torque from the twin-turbo 3. 0-liter inline-six engine, and an overboost function allows for seven-second blasts of 370 lb-ft of torque. Unlike the regular-grade 2011 335i, the 335is sticks with the older twin-turbo engine for the simple reason that BMW engineers had more experience tuning it. This same engine can also be found in the Z4 sDrive35is that was introduced at this... In the Z4, the engine makes 335 hp. a more restrictive intake on the 3-series accounts for the 15-hp difference. To make the 335is a track-worthy vehicle, BMW upgrades the cooling system with an additional radiator and beefs up the engine mounts. You know exactly what the BMW 335i sedan is. It’s one of the best sports sedans on the market, with a perfect balance of supple ride and superb handling. For 2011, BMW dropped the N54 twin-turbocharged 3. 0-liter inline-six and replaced it with the N55 single-turbo 3. 0-liter. With direct fuel injection, a twin-scroll turbocharger, and BMW’s Valvetronic variable-valve-lift system—the N54 covered its turbo and direct-injection bases but lacked Valvetronic—the new engine bests its predecessor’s EPA-estimated fuel economy,... Peak horsepower still arrives at 5800 rpm, but the new motor delivers its torque punch at 1200 rpm, 200 revs earlier. With the announcement of the move to the single-turbo engine, enthusiasts (including us) cried foul. Our 2011 335i was just as quick as the twin-turbo car, reaching 60 mph in the same sprightly 4. 8 seconds. The quarter-mile flew by in 13. 6 seconds at 106 mph, 0. 1 second behind the quickest twin-turbo sedan we tested. After the century mark, however, the new mill picks up steam, reaching 140 mph nearly a full second quicker.
