Still like the BMW diesel, but still don’t like BMW option costs. ROAD TEST EDITOR JONATHAN WONG: Like the BMW 328d xDrive Sports Wagon we had in here previously, the cost to upgrade to the 2. 0-liter diesel four-cylinder comes out to be $1,500. As I pointed out in my wagon notes, that’s not crazy, considering... It’s no secret that I like my diesels because torque is a wonderful thing and you can’t argue with the fuel economy that you get with them, but in the case of the 3-series, it means you have to live with an eight-speed automatic transmission. What also helps is that the ZF-built eight-speed auto happens to be great gearbox, which is employed throughout the BMW lineup and many, many brands like Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin and Chrysler. It features a quick and responsive manual shift mode and the shift themselves are seamless and quick. And as revs climb it also doesn’t sound extremely refined when compared to BMW’s six-cylinder oil burners, but the thrust is wonderful. Source: autoweek.com

S. market for diesel-fueled vehicles, which are 30 to 35 percent more fuel efficient but usually several thousand dollars more expensive than their gasoline counterparts. That is too bad, because we are getting some of the best diesel cars and trucks ever made available — models such as the excellent 2015 BMW 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, the subject of this week’s column. A well-equipped BMW 328d xDrive (an all-wheel-drive compact diesel wagon) is $52,050 in final transaction pricing. Compare that with an estimated $46,500 for a similarly equipped gasoline BMW 328i xDrive Sports Wagon. The differences in addition to pricing: The 328d xDrive gets 31 miles per gallon in the city and 43 miles per gallon on the highway. It also delivers more torque — engine-twisting power, the automotive power that really matters — than the 328i x Drive (280 pound-feet of torque for the 328d vs. 258 pound-feet of torque for the 328i x Drive). But the 328i has more horsepower, the uppermost measurement of automotive prowess in the minds of most car buyers — 241 horsepower compared with 180 horsepower for the 328d. Having a great BMW wagon comes at a price premium. Maybe it was irritation with cynical BMW pricing. Whatever the reason, I was less enamored of the 2015 BMW 328d xDrive Sports Wagon this time around than during our last test of the car. Even with diesel running a buck more a gallon than gasoline, 31 city/43 highway is hard to argue with. In my driving I averaged around 31 mpg via the trip computer, but the tank average was closer to 27 mpg. when you need to go NOW the car scoots, then drops down to about 1,800 rpm to cruise on the highway. That said, the engine is clattery on acceleration, more so than our old Volkswagen Passat TDI or any of the current Mercedes diesel fours. I also tested some of the wagon’s carrying capacity, folding down the rear seats to drag home 200 lbs of loudspeakers (much to wife’s chagrin). At 44-inches, the speakers, laid on their sides, fit easily in the cargo bay with room left for padding all around. We’ve gone on at length about German manufacturer’s obnoxious option pricing, and the 3-series wagon’s Monroney came with the usual bad jokes: A grand for a backup camera and. Source: autoweek.com
