Italy’s most stunning road race in living color. The Mille Miglia -- the all-out race that ran between 1927 and 1957, not the modern revival -- is one of those events that we often catch ourselves imagining in black and white. It’s also a great excuse for automakers to dust off their vintage metal, as BMW did this year with a quintet of classic 328s. Though we often associate Italian marques with the road race, the 2. 0-liter inline-six-powered BMW 328 has seen a fair... a 328 won its class in 1938 and was the outright victor in 1940. Further, the 1940 car went on to win the 2004 Mille Miglia -- the only car to date that has triumphed in both incarnations of the race. For the 2015 Mille Miglia, BMW fielded the following teams. It starts in Brescia, it ends in Brescia, but it’s the in-between that makes the Mille Miglia one of the greatest spectacles in today’s automotive world. The race, like its earlier namesake, is a race on public roads in Italy. Unlike it’s earlier predecessor, which was a full-throttle, 1000 mile course with speeds exceeding 170mph, the race is now a time trial for cars that either did participate in the original race or could have. This year saw nearly 500 historic and vintage racers, many worth many millions of dollars, unleashed onto the Italian roads, lined with cheering people and the omnipresent, everyday Italian traffic of trucks, Fiats and Vespas. Red lights, white lines and traffic laws became mere suggestions and often cars would take the path of least resistance which might just be the wrong way down the wrong side of a divided street. The cars were on the road for 12 and 13 hours at a time, often arriving so late that drivers would only get a few hours of sleep before they hit the road again. They start in Brescia in the North, a run to Rome somewhere in the middle and back to Brescia along some circuitous route that in this year’s event took them through Rimini, San Marino, Sienna, Parma (via Pisa which entails a several hour detour... Audi's Plan to Make an Electric SUV With a 300-Mile* Range - Wired

Audi wants to build an all-electric SUV that will go 300 miles on a charge, and it’s working with Samsung and LG to get it done. The South Korean companies are two of the world’s biggest producers of the lithium-ion batteries that power humanity’s growing pile of phones, laptops, and electric cars. Audi previously used battery cells from Sanyo and Panasonic to power its “e-tron” plug-in hybrid electric cars. “This will allow us to supply a technological solution that makes electric cars even more attractive for our customers,” says Dr. Bernd Martens, a member of the board of management of Audi’s procurement division. The three companies have revealed little beyond the existence of the partnership, and it’s unclear exactly how it will work with even basic questions like whether both companies provide batteries, or if one will be ousted down the line, unanswered. All Audi had to say is it’s planning to build a whole lot more EVs, so it’s time to forge strong relationships with battery suppliers. One new model will be the yet-to-be-named 300-mile SUV, which Audi teased in April when it revealed renderings of a concept called the Prologue Allroad concept. That’s because the New European Driving Cycle, the test used to rate fuel economy across the pond, is a bit generous (and has been criticized as such ).
