2014 BMW 328i xDrive Sports Wagon - Car and Driver

When BMW stopped selling the hatchback ti model in the U. S. in 1999, there were no apologies made. Then came the contradiction: BMW immediately brought the 3-series wagon to our shores for the first time. Of course it is. And, of course, Americans do not dislike hatchbacks any more than we dislike dark bread. White might be the bestseller, but once a taste for something more develops, it’s hard to give up. Which is presumably why BMW continues to offer a 3-series wagon here. The gasoline and diesel engines are both turbocharged, 2. 0-liter four-cylinders, and regardless of which one is powering your 3-series wagon, you will get an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The same 240-hp, gas-powered four (making 255 lb-ft of torque) propels the 328i xDrive wagon through the quarter-mile in 14. 3 seconds, just 0. 1 second behind the last 328i sedan we clocked , that one a rear-driver. As would be expected, the wagon body shifts weight distribution a bit, from 50. 4 percent over the rear axle of the sedan to 51. 7 percent here. The BMW 3-series was for many years the benchmark of the sports-sedan segment but a revitalized competitive set sees the current version in desperate need of an update. The newly redesigned Mercedes-Benz C-class has turned into a formidable competitor, the Cadillac ATS boasts better driving dynamics, and the Audi A4 is about to be completely overhauled on a new architecture later this year. Meanwhile, BMW's 3-series has lost some of its focus as it has tried to broaden its appeal. For the 2016 model year, the 3-series gets a midterm facelift that goes beyond the cosmetic. That’s not to say cosmetics are ignored: The Bimmer's headlights get a sharper and more angular contour, and they’re now available as full LEDs—or adaptive full LEDs. The taillights (already LEDs) have a new shape and new innards as well, although only brand aficionados will notice the difference. The Luxury Line and M Sport upgrades continue to be available, too. On top of that, the optional Premium package for the 328i and 328d now includes the aforementioned LED headlights, in addition to Comfort Access, satellite radio, and a sunroof. And BMW promises that the navigation and infotainment system will work better and offer quicker responses, and automatic “over-the-air” map updates are now part of the nav deal (at least for the first three years of the car’s life), using SIM... Test Drive: Cadillac ATS 2.0T vs. BMW 328i - BMWBLOG (blog)

Parked side-by-side for the first time, we began to get a feeling for what we were in for. BMW has been building the 3 Series sport sedan for nearly 40 years, and for nearly 40 years it has been the best. If history repeats itself, then BMW has nothing to prove. But Cadillac, the new kid on the block in this segment, wants so badly to spoil BMW’s lunch. The ATS arrived on scene calling BMW out in every commercial, a direct challenge to its apparent dominance. They would like nothing more than the ATS to claim victory over the 3 Series. The BMW wears its heritage, kidney grilles and double lights, as a badge of honor. In Luxury Line trim, it gets chrome slats in those grilles, as well as chrome accenting around the fog-lights and on the lower fascia. The Cadillac’s front end is much bolder, accented by LED running lights that extend from high on the hood down to where you would expect fog lights. The ATS’s wide set tail lights and large third brake light are reminiscent of the outgoing CTS-V coupe, without the extra angles and points. The BMW is far more restrained. The BMW has more visual character and a more cohesive design. Inside, the Cadillac’s higher belt-line and lack of sunroof make it much darker than the BMW. Source: www.bmwblog.com
