Compare that with an estimated $46,500 for a similarly equipped gasoline BMW 328i xDrive Sports Wagon. The differences in addition to pricing: The 328d xDrive gets 31 miles per gallon in the city and 43 miles per gallon on the highway. It also delivers more torque — engine-twisting power, the automotive power that really matters — than the 328i x Drive (280 pound-feet of torque for the 328d vs. 258 pound-feet of torque for the 328i x Drive). But the 328i has more horsepower, the uppermost measurement of automotive prowess in the minds of most car buyers — 241 horsepower compared with 180 horsepower for the 328d.
