2015 GMC Canyon - Car and Driver (blog)

The Canyon is the upscale twin to the Chevy Colorado. Extended- and crew-cab styles as well as five- and six-foot beds are available. so is a six-speed manual for base models while the rest get a six-speed automatic. Instrumented Test – 2015 GMC Canyon V-6 4x4 Crew Cab Power Options There are currently two Canyon engine options. The standard is a 2. 5-liter four with 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque, while the step-up engine is a 3. 6-liter V-6 making 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft. A six-speed manual can be had with rear-wheel-drive 2. 5 models, but everything else, including our V-6 truck, uses a six-speed automatic. A turbo-diesel six option is on the horizon but not until model year 2016. As you’d expect, the four gets better EPA ratings—19 mpg city and 25 highway with 4WD, while a 4WD V-6 like our example is rated at 17/24. (We logged 17 mpg without pushing... ) But the six-cylinder is the only choice for owners planning to exploit the Canyon’s 7000-pound towing capability, and it’s also a better choice for getting across the intersection when the light turns green. The six-speed automatic is nicely programmed for up- and downshifts in full auto mode, with no unwarranted hunting and prompt kickdown when the driver tramps on the accelerator pedal. GM's announced plans to build a new Chevrolet Colorado pickup in Missouri, but it hasn't confirmed or denied a new Canyon will join in the fray. On the market since the mid-2000s, the Canyon and Colorado were more like the outgoing Ford Ranger in size and in price, while other trucks like the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier moved up into mid-size proportions. The Canyon looks the part of a larger truck, though, with its bluff front end, wide GMC grille, and relentlessly rectilinear body. The Canyon's powertrains line up with those in the Colorado, and there's one choice we recommend here. The Canyon's best with the top-of-the-line 300-horsepower, 5. 3-liter V-8. It's only offered on the top trim levels, and has the lowest gas mileage in the lineup, but the V-8 is the smoothest drivetrain by a good margin. Source: www.thecarconnection.com

  • 2012 GMC Canyon Review - Motor Trend

The 2012 GMC Canyon midsize truck is available in several cab and bed configurations. Its smaller size makes it more maneuverable than full-size trucks in tight parking lots and city streets. Unfortunately for the Canyon, larger trucks like the GMC Sierra don't cost much more and get about the same fuel economy.

The Canyon hit the streets eight years ago with a choice of inline-four or inline five-cylinder engines. The manual-equipped four-cylinder engine offers decent power and fuel mileage. The five-cylinder automatic transmission combo feels slower and suffers from an inherent vibration from the odd cylinder count. A few years ago the 5.3-liter V-8 from the larger Sierra 1500 was added as an option. Unfortunately, mating the V-8 to a four-speed automatic nets it less fuel economy than the larger truck with the same engine and a six-speed automatic.

It can tow up to 6000 pounds with the V-8 making it a good value for city dwellers who need its towing capacity and park in tight lots. An optional ZQ8 sport-tuned suspension lowers the truck one inch and increases handling. The Z71 off-road package for two- and four-wheel drive versions is ideal for those who spend time off-road. The Canyon's future is uncertain and may be replaced or discontinued by the summer of 2012.

    The Range

    Bodystyles: TruckEngines: 2.9L I-4, 3.7L I-5, 5.3L V-8.ETransmissions: 5-speed manual, 4-speed automaticEModels: Work Truck, SLE1, SLE2, SLT

    What's New

The future of the Canyon is uncertain, but its Chevrolet Colorado platform mate will be replaced by an all-new model, sometime after the current model goes out of production before the end of June 2012. GMC still gave its smallest pickup truck some updates. SLE2 4WD Extended Cab models gain a standard rear sliding window. A Bodyguard Package includes bed rail protectors and molded splash guards. A new dealer-installed Chrome Accessory Package includes a chrome fuel fill door and polished chrome exhaust tip. All 4WD and all Crew Cab models now have an automatic locking differential standard.

    Exterior

Regular and extended cab Canyons have a six-foot, one-inch long bed; Crew cab models come with a five-foot, one-inch bed. Tailgates can be lowered all the way or stop part-way with its top at the same height as the wheel-wells to make carrying four-foot by eight-foot sheets of plywood easier. Tailgate is lockable and removable. An optional ZQ8 sport suspension lowers the Canyon's ride height one inch. The ZQ8 package also includes body-colored bumpers, lower and upper grille with chrome surround.

    Interior

The 2012 Canyon comes in three cab sizes and can accommodate two to six passengers. Extended cabs have rear-hinged doors; crew cab models have full-size, front-hinged doors. The interior is utilitarian with lots of hard plastic, but is competent for its mission and has large easy-to-read gauges. Crew cab models have 60/40 split folding rear seats. Air conditioning, AM/FM stereo with SiriusXM radio, 12v power outlet, cruise control, and Bluetooth are standard. CD player with MP3 playback, keyless entry, and leather are among the options.

    Performance & Handling

The regular and extended cabs with the four-cylinder engine and manual transmission feel spunkier than the five-cylinder, automatic powertrain combination. The five-cylinder engine has an inherent vibration and harshness that can be felt during acceleration. The heavier Crew Cab needs the V-8 engine's torque, but its four-speed automatic hampers fuel economy compared to the full-size Sierra 1500 with the same engine and six-speed automatic transmission. Ride is generally rougher than full-size trucks, too.

    Safety

The Canyon comes with front and side-curtain airbags standard. The front passenger seat airbag can be turned off. StabiliTrak electronic stability control work to reduce the risk of rollover crashes. Four-wheel ABS brakes with front discs and rear drums and traction control are standard. Day-time running lights and a tire pressure monitoring system are also standard.

    EPA Fuel Economy

    2.9L RWD: 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway (manual); 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway (automatic)2.9L 4WD: 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway (manual); 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway (automatic)3.7L RWD: 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway (automatic)3.7L 4WD: 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway (automatic)5.3L RWD: 15 mpg city/20 mpg highway (automatic)5.3L 4WD: 14 mpg city/19 mpg highway (automatic)

2012 GMC Canyon Crew Cab Review

    By KBB.com Editors

    KBB Expert Rating: 6.0

With the demise of the Ford Ranger, the 2012 GMC Canyon pickup truck (and its sister vehicle, the Chevrolet Colorado) are the sole domestic occupants of the compact-pickup market. And, while at first glance competing with the two biggest names in the Japanese auto industry (Toyota and Nissan) may seem a daunting task, the 2012 GMC Canyon actually has some attractive prospects. The GMC Canyon pickup truck's 4-cylinder engine has significantly more horsepower and torque than the 4-cylinder engines of the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier, and unlike the Nissan Frontier, the Canyon offers a regular-cab model. You can also opt for a V8 engine, something neither the Tacoma nor Frontier provides. And, while it's true that the 2012 GMC Canyon pickup is not as wide as its competition, it can still do most jobs required of a compact pickup for a lot less money.

    You'll Like This Car If...

If you're looking for a simple, clean and inexpensive compact pickup to be used the way a compact pickup was intended (working, not cruising), the 2012 GMC Canyon is about as no-nonsense as you can get.

You May Not Like This Car If...

If you're looking for a more upscale interior big on roominess and comfort, the upper-end models from Nissan and Toyota make a better choice. Those who need to tow more than 6,000 pounds will be better served by a full-size GMC pickup.

    What's New for 2012

For 2012, GMC adds improved Bluetooth connectivity to the Canyon's option list, while a sliding rear window becomes standard on the SLE-2 4WD Extended Cab model. All 4WD and Crew Cab models gain an automatic locking rear differential.

    Driving the Canyon Crew Cab

Driving Impressions The 2012 GMC Canyon's greatest strength can be found in its unique engine offerings and rigid frame. The 2012 GMC Canyon pickup's rigid chassis contributes to the truck's excellent road...

manners, as well as its stability off-road. Even over washboard roads, the Canyon exhibits none of the dash-rattling or squeaks that might be expected, although the rear axle does hop around quite a bit. On the flip side, the Canyon does have an unusually wide turning radius that sometimes requires a 4- or 5-point maneuver when making a 180-degree direction change. Power for the 2012 GMC Canyon pickup is provided by a peppy 4-cylinder engine that easily out-powers the base engines from Toyota and Nissan. A 242-horsepower 5-cylinder engine is optional, as is a stump-pulling 300-horsepower V8. Fuel economy is also impressive, especially on 4-cylinder models equipped with a manual transmission.

    Favorite Features

Tailgate DesignThe 2012 GMC Canyon's tailgate can be set at a 55-degree angle that aligns the top of the tailgate with the tops of the wheel housings, thus allowing easy loading and hauling of large, flat panels.

Side-Curtain AirbagsStandard side-curtain airbags are an important safety feature that can protect occupants in the event of a side-impact accident.

2012 GMC Canyon Crew Cab Details

    Interior

While we wouldn't call the 2012 GMC Canyon pickup truck's interior innovative or elegant, it is clean and functional, with simple-to-read gauges and essential switchgear placed within easy reach of the driver. We like the Canyon's seats as they offer firm foam that provides good lumbar and lower thigh support; the seats are also covered in a durable and easy-to-clean cloth fabric. In the Crew Cab models, a rear seat is offered, but we think its upright seatback will be a bit uncomfortable on long trips. Extended Cab models feature two flip-down seat bottoms intended for passengers looking only for a quick lift to the job site or, preferably, their own vehicle. Upper-level models offer a bit more contrast and upgraded seating, but the overall hard plastics and drab primer-gray color aren't very uplifting.

    Exterior

The 2012 GMC Canyon distinguishes itself by its slab-sided sheet metal punctuated with bulging fender flares and big, bright alloy wheels. A sort of miniaturized GMC Silverado, the Canyon has the definitive look common to all of GMC's work trucks. Rolling on a 111.3-inch wheelbase, Regular Cab Canyon models are shorter than the Extended and Crew Cab trucks, which ride on a 126-inch wheelbase. Bed lengths vary too, with Regular and Extended Cab models supporting a 6-foot bed, and Crew Cab models offering a 5-foot bed. The 2012 GMC Canyon pickup truck's tall bed walls allow more storage and give the Canyon best-in-class cargo volume. Another clever and useful feature is the Canyon's 2-stage tailgate that can be opened flat or propped at a 55-degree angle. This prop feature allows long items such as plywood or sheet rock resting on the tops of the wheel housing to remain level as they pass over the tailgate's top edge.

    Notable Equipment

    Standard Equipment

The 2012 GMC Canyon SLE-1 comes standard with a 2.9-liter 4-cylinder engine that develops a healthy 185 horsepower. You'll also find a 5-speed manual transmission, air conditioning, cruise control, anti-lock brakes (ABS), StabiliTrak stability control, head-curtain airbags, chrome front and rear bumpers, dual outside mirrors, automatic headlights, a tilt steering wheel, AM/FM stereo with SiriusXM Satellite Radio, and tachometer. Various additions for the SLE levels of trim include a CD/MP3 player and upgraded upholstery, as well as engine-upgrade options for the SLE-1.

    Optional Equipment

Options include 4-wheel drive, a 4-speed automatic transmission, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, auto-dimming rearview mirror, running boards, automatic locking rear differential, the Z71 off-road package, a tow package, Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, a chrome package featuring chrome fuel door and exhaust tips, power and heated leather seating, ZQ8 sport suspension and 17- and 18-inch wheels.

    Under the Hood

Engine choices for the 2012 GMC Canyon compact pickup include 4- and 5-cylinder powerplants, as well as an optional V8. The standard 2.9-liter 4-cylinder and the optional 3.7-liter 5-cylinder might seem small, but they are both big on power. The 2.9-liter produces an impressive 185 horsepower and offers up most of its 190 pound-feet of torque between the ranges of 1,200 and 5,600 rpm. That's enough power to muscle any lightly equipped 4-wheel-drive vehicle through the toughest terrain. The optional 3.7-liter engine makes 242 horsepower. Both of these engines produce class-leading horsepower while returning outstanding fuel economy. While the 5.3-liter V8 offers impressive power, its fuel-economy figures fall far short of its smaller stablemates.

The 2015 GMC Canyon ranks 2 out of 4 Compact Pickup Trucks. This ranking is based on our analysis of published reviews and test drives of the GMC Canyon, as well as reliability and safety data.

Auto journalists agree that the 2015 GMC Canyon has a balanced, quiet ride and one of the most opulent interiors in the class.

The 2015 GMC Canyon comes standard with a four-cylinder engine or an optional V6 engine. Reviewers write that the base engine feels sufficiently strong for everyday driving and that V6 models have ample power for towing and hauling. An automatic transmission is offered with either engine, and four-cylinder models are also available with a manual transmission. A V6-powered Canyon has an EPA fuel economy rating of 18/26 mpg city/highway, which is good for the class. Test drivers say the automatic shifts smoothly, but note that it sometimes hunts for the right gear, especially on hills. Auto journalists agree that the Canyon rides comfortably, especially for a compact trunk.

Reviewers say that the 2015 GMC Canyon has a modern, handsome cabin design and upscale materials. Test drivers find the front seats supportive and remark that the cabin is very quiet at speed. The extended cab's rear seats aren't comfortable for adults, reviewers say, though this is typical for the class. However, they agree that the crew cab has ample back-seat space for adults. The Canyon comes standard with a rearview camera and a USB connection. Optional features include GMC's IntelliLink infotainment system, navigation, Bluetooth, a seven-speaker Bose audio system, lane departure warning and forward collision alert. Some test drivers remark that IntelliLink is intuitive and the system’s controls are easy to reach, but others note that it takes multiple steps to access some audio functions.

"GM says the Canyon is the 'premium truck in the segment,' which, given its distinct lack of competitors, is a bit like saying that Google is a popular search engine. Still, the brand has come to the table with a convincing package that hits all the right marks for a truck in an easy-to-manage package." -- Car and Driver "The 2015 has been enlarged to the point where it now measures up well against its chief competition, the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier. Combined with a more refined interior and the latest technology, it's now the most advanced midsize pickup you can buy." -- Edmunds "After spending quality time in the new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon (as well as their competition) it was obvious GM has set a new benchmark in the midsize truck category. Nissan's Frontier and Toyota's Tacoma will both receive updates in the next two years, but until then GM's offerings have a clear advantage." -- Forbes "With a premium look and feel, and the ability to option in to a very large number of bells and whistles, GMC really is breaking new ground for a truck segment that has mostly existed for value shoppers, thus far." -- Autoblog GMC Canyon Pictures & Videos

    Other Trucks to Consider

According to test drivers, the Nissan Frontier has strong acceleration and ample passing power with its available V6 engine. Link the Canyon, the Nissan Frontier is available in extended and crew cab body styles, but it has a lower starting price.

Reviewers like the Honda Ridgeline's versatile cargo hauling features such as a lockable in-bed trunk and tailgate that can be lowered or opened to one side. They're also pleased with its comfortable ride and car-like handling.
