  Compact pickups like the GMC Canyon fulfill an important role for consumers who don't need the capabilities of full-size pickup trucks. Like its rivals, the Canyon is closer to midsize than truly compact. Accordingly, it offers a reasonable amount of passenger room and hauling capability for its size.

  As you'd expect, the Canyon features multiple bed and cab combinations and several trim levels that allow customers to get anything from a bare-bones work truck to a fully loaded family hauler. Later versions of the GMC Canyon offer strong, fuel-efficient engines and a complete menu of technology features in the cab.

• 2015 GMC Canyon Review - Motor Trend

  After a brief hiatus, the Canyon is back. The 2015 GMC Canyon is all-new this year, with it (and the related 2015 Chevrolet Colorado) looking to completely revamp the stale midsize pickup segment. The GMC Canyon aims to bring innovative features for "lifestyle" pickup drivers. Available with three engines, rear- or four-wheel drive, two cab styles, and two bed lengths, the 2015 Canyon looks to have something for everyone.

  The 2015 GMC Canyon's base engine is a 2.5-liter I-4 producing 193 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. Optional is a 3.6-liter V-6 making 302 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. In 2016, GMC will offer a segment-exclusive 2.8-liter, turbodiesel I-4, which is expected to produce 185 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque and improve both towing performance and fuel economy. A six-speed manual will be available, though most Canyons will come with a six-speed automatic transmission. The GMC Canyon will feature extended and crew cab configurations, with either a 5- or 6-foot bed.

  While the Chevrolet Colorado looks to be more of a lifestyle truck compared with the GMC, the Canyon will likely focus on those who need a truck for work, but don't need a Sierra. The Canyon sports mini-Sierra styling with LED running lights, slab-styling, and a chrome grille. Inside the Canyon offers GMC's latest infotainment system, and leather seats are available.

  The NHTSA gave the 2015 Canyon Extended Cab a four-star overall safety rating (out of a possible five stars; Crew Cab models have not yet been crash tested). In IIHS evaluations, the truck received a good score in the moderate overlap front crash test (Good is the highest possible score).

  New for 2015

  Loosely based on the global Chevrolet Colorado, the 2015 GMC Canyon is all-new this year. Unlike the old Canyon, the new one looks to lead the segment thanks to its big V-6 engine and an optional turbodiesel I-4. The Canyon also sports a full-boxed ladder frame for durability, optional four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case, and a variety of ways to outfit the bed.

  The 2015 GMC Canyon comes standard with a four-cylinder engine or an optional V6 engine. Reviewers write that the base engine feels sufficiently strong for everyday driving and that V6 models have ample power for towing and hauling. An automatic transmission is offered with either engine, and four-cylinder models are also available with a manual transmission. A V6-powered Canyon has an EPA fuel economy rating of 18/26 mpg city/highway, which is good for the class. Test drivers say the automatic shifts smoothly, but note that it sometimes hunts for the right gear, especially on hills. Auto journalists agree that the Canyon rides comfortably, especially for a compact trunk.

  Reviewers say that the 2015 GMC Canyon has a modern, handsome cabin design and upscale materials. Test drivers find the front seats supportive and remark that the cabin is very quiet at speed.   According to test drivers, the Nissan Frontier has strong acceleration and ample passing power with its available V6 engine. Link the Canyon, the Nissan Frontier is available in extended and crew cab body styles, but it has a lower starting price.

  The 2015 GMC Canyon is reintroduced for the 2015 model year after having been discontinued after the 2012 model year, and is available as a four-seat extended cab or five-seat crew cab. Rear-wheel drive is standard and four-wheel drive is optional. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is standard and a 3.6-liter V6 is optional. Four-cylinder models are available with either a six-speed automatic or manual transmission, while V6 models only come with the automatic. There are three trims: base, SLE and SLT.
