The F-150’s suspension tuning is almost spot on with the truck unladen: never too stiff or too soft. The brake pedal is deliberate, and the F-150’s 194-foot stopping distance from 70 mph is par for the segment. Ford’s F-series has been the pickup-sales king since the late ’70s, but in recent years, the F-150 has felt like it was powered by a circa-1978 powertrain. Until 2011, its top engine was a 5. 4-liter V-8 making a wimpy 310 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque. The 2010 F-150 was rated to tow nearly six tons, but the engine felt like it could barely handle the truck’s own 2. 5 or so. That complaint is gone for 2011, dead along with the 5. 4. Ford has comprehensively overhauled its truck-engine lineup for... The F-150’s maximum towing capacity is unchanged, but the ability of the engine to handle a load without the driver feeling like he needs the aid of a mule team is greatly improved. The top gas engine now is a single-overhead-cam 6. 2-liter V-8 with variable valve timing that makes 411 hp at 5500 rpm and 434 lb-ft at 4500. It is standard in the F-series Super Duty and special-edition F-150s like the Raptor and the... • 2011 Ford F-150 XLT SuperCrew 4x4 5.0 V8 – Review – Car ...

    What Is It?

It’s the country-music version of “rollin’ in my five-point-oh.” Included in the F-150’s new engine portfolio for 2011 is this 5.0-liter V-8 borrowed from Vanilla Ice’s new Mustang GT. Here, the motor makes 360 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque, some 52 hp and 10 lb-ft less than in the Mustang—presumably, it is detuned to make room for more expensive options like the 6.2-liter V-8 and 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6. But floor the accelerator, and the speed and sound of this F-150 will have you feeling like you’re wheeling a two-plus-two.

    How Does It Drive?

It drives rather untrucklike, which is a good thing. The F-150’s suspension tuning is almost spot on with the truck unladen: never too stiff or too soft. Even over broken pavement, the suspension soaks up road warts more like a luxury car than a pickup. The six-speed automatic is smooth but often executes multiple-gear downshifts in two pronounced steps when passing, which slows the proceedings. The brake pedal is deliberate, and the F-150’s 194-foot stopping distance from 70 mph is par for the segment.

Piloting the F-150 from its wonderfully comfortable bucket seats is a delight, but when we hung an empty 24-foot enclosed trailer from the tail, we found a few shortcomings. The first of our two gripes is the steering. Its responsiveness is a benefit when not towing, but the wheel is a touch too sensitive on-center, and it loads up quickly within just a few degrees, which keeps it twitching when there’s a trailer out back. A vehicle meant for work shouldn’t have a rack this active.

Our other complaint concerns the suspension and the chassis. Although rated to tow a max of 9300 pounds in this configuration, the truck bounced, bucked, and was pushed around by less than half that weight. We have no knocks against the powertrain, especially using the transmission’s tow mode, but the F-150’s foundation felt soft and unsettled. If you’re regularly towing heavy loads and need a Ford, we recommend stepping up to the F-250.

    How Does It Stack Up?

The current F-150 has always fared well against the competition, but prior to 2011, it lacked a punchy engine. The 310-hp, 5.4-liter V-8 with 365 lb-ft of torque was simply outgunned, and the 5.0 marks the completion of a well-rounded package. On the track, the 5.0 reached 60 mph in 6.7 seconds and did the quarter-mile in 15.1 seconds at 93 mph. For reference, that’s an improvement of 1.2 seconds to 60 and 1.1 seconds in the quarter compared with the last similarly equipped 5.4 we tested, and it’s in the mix with segment leaders like the Toyota Tundra 5.7-liter and Hemi-powered Dodge Ram. Interestingly, although the F-150 was 0.4 second slower to 60 than a 6.2-liter truck we recently tested, it posted an identical quarter-mile time, with a 1-mph-faster trap speed.

Aside from the towing complaints, our one quibble with the F-150 has to do with the interior. As comfy as it is, our test truck’s dash wore five different colors and four diverse textures. It’s awfully busy, although it does offer a plethora of storage cubbies. (Depending on which trim level is ordered, the F-150’s dash layout and colors change significantly from the XLT tested here.)

    What’s the Cost?

An F-150 with the 5.0-liter can be had for as little as $24,765 if a regular-cab, two-wheel-drive truck with a short bed suits your needs. Our truck was an XLT with four-wheel drive and a crew cab that offered oodles of back-seat space. The base price for this setup is $37,255. Additional options were few, including a towing package, the highly recommended bucket front seats, a keyless-entry pad, and the XLT Convenience Group, which includes adjustable pedals, Sync, heated and powered mirrors, and a power driver’s seat. Total price: $38,505. The truck, complete with a column shifter, was a refreshing departure from the loaded-to-the-gills King Ranch trim Ford often sends our way. We’d keep $75 in our pocket and forgo the keyless-entry pad but would otherwise spec our F-150 5.0 exactly the same way.

    View Photos View Photos

    Highs and Lows Highs:

Solid powertrain, well-tuned suspension (unladen), great bucket seats, sounds like a Mustang.

    Lows:

Busy interior, steering and suspension are weak points when hauling.

  • Ford F-150 News: 2011 Ford F-150 Engine Specs – Car and Driver

Following numerous hints over the past few months, Ford has revealed that it is completely revamping the powertrain lineup for the 2011 F-150 pickup with not one, two, or even three new gasoline engines, instead offering a choice of four new powerplants. Hot on the heels of the Blue Oval’s recent fake-out of General Motors to grab the title of most powerful heavy-duty pickup with the 2011 F-series Super Duty, the improvements to the 2011 F-150 update the light-duty lineup with sorely-needed replacements for the underpowered and out-gunned 5.4-liter V-8.

    300 Horses Standard

First up is the all-aluminum 3.7-liter Duratec V-6 that reinvigorated the base Mustang for 2011. The engine makes 305 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque in its pony-car application, but Ford hasn’t finalized the output for the trucks. Expectations are about 300 hp at 6500 rpm and 275 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm, along with the best fuel economy among full-size trucks. The EPA has yet to rate any of Ford’s new mills for city/highway mileage, but the company is confident that at least one of its new powertrains—this one—will best the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra two-mode hybrids, which are rated at up to 21 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.

Trucks equipped with the V-6 are able to tow up to an impressive 6100 pounds and are E85-capable. Other notable features include intake and exhaust plumbing unique to the F-150, piston-cooling oil jets, variable valve timing for all camshafts, and a forged steel crankshaft. The 3.7 will be offered on XL, XLT, and STX trim levels when the new F-150s go on sale later this year.

    The Five-Oh

Replacing the tried-and-tired 5.4-liter V-8 as the F-150’s volume engine will be the gutsy, all-aluminum, DOHC 5.0-liter V-8 that we’ve fallen in love with in the 2011 Mustang GT. It, too, receives truck-specific tweaks that diminish its overall power in the name of better drivability, but it will produce a still-respectable 360 hp at 5500 rpm and 380 lb-ft of torque at 4250. Major changes separating it from the version in the Mustang are a lower 10.5:1 compression ratio, a revised engine-management system, new intake camshafts with shorter duration, and new cast-iron exhaust manifolds. While not the 412 hp and 390 lb-ft found in the Mustang, the truck’s 5.0 compares favorably with the old 5.4, which produced 320 hp and 390 lb-ft with E-85 or just 310 hp and 365 lb-ft on regular gas. The V-8 also sports variable valve timing and E85 capability, and is rated to tow up to 9800 pounds.

As the volume engine, the 5.0 will be available in virtually all F-150s, from the base XL to the luxurious Platinum model. Here, too, Ford expects fuel economy to best all other entry-level V-8s in the segment.

      6.2-liter "Boss" V-8 engine

In other V-8 news, the top eight-cylinder for 2011 will be the big, 6.2-liter “Boss” V-8 already seen in the 2011 Raptor 6.2. For 2011, at least, it will be the only engine available in the off-road special. Rated at 411 hp at 5500 rpm and 434 lb-ft at 4500 rpm, the 6.2 will tow a hefty 11,300 pounds and will be the featured engine in special-edition models such as the F-150 Harley-Davidson and aforementioned Raptor. It also will be offered as an option on Platinum models and will be the base engine in the F-series Super Duty. The engine features two spark plugs per cylinder and variable valve timing, and is the most powerful V-8 available in the light-duty pickup segment.

A V-6 is the Premium Engine?

Strange as it is, Ford is positioning a V-6 as the “premium” engine in the F-150. While that idea might be at odds with the buying habits of legions of hard-core truck buyers accustomed to a V-8 rumble, this is no ordinary V-6. Displacing 3.5 liters and packing direct injection and a pair of quick-spooling turbochargers, the engine is Ford’s EcoBoost V-6, appearing here in its first rear-wheel-drive application.

While Ford is still cagey about final output ahead of its official certification, the company claims power will be close to the 365 hp that the engine makes in the Taurus SHO, but with considerably more torque. We got a sneak peek when engineers fired up an EcoBoost V-6 on a dynamometer for demonstration purposes and a figure of 408 lb-ft at about 3500 rpm popped up on a computer monitor. The new engine ought to have little trouble moving an F-150’s bulk with verve. Ford says peak output will come at a low 2000–2500 rpm, and that official figures should be released in the next month or so. (Update: Ford has announced that the EcoBoost will make 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. Click here to see how the 2011 F-150's engines stack up against the Dodge Ram's and Chevrolet Silverado's.)

The EcoBoost V-6 is projected to come close to the naturally aspirated 3.7 V-6 in terms of fuel efficiency, and, like the 6.2 V-8, is rated to pull up to 11,300 pounds. Along with the turbos—different on the truck than in other EcoBoost applications—and direct injection, the six also sports dual variable valve timing, a 10.0:1 compression ratio, truck-specific intake and exhaust camshafts, revised heads, an updated water pump, and new pistons.

Unlike the other engines, all of which should be available later in 2010, the EcoBoost V-6 won’t be available until the first quarter of 2011. It will, however, be offered in virtually every F-150, including those optioned with the max-towing package. The lone exception will be STX models, which will have their powertrain range capped by the 5.0-liter V-8.

      3.5-liter "EcoBoost" twin-turbocharged and direct-injected V-6 engine

With deliveries still a ways off and output yet to be determined, Ford wouldn’t say much about other possible applications for the rear-drive EcoBoost engine. Dropping it in the Mustang wouldn’t make much sense—its output is a bit too close to that of the GT’s V-8—but one EcoBoost engineer we cornered confirmed that his department had been approached by the folks at SVT, who wanted to investigate its possible use in the high-flying F-150 Raptor.

    Power With Efficiency

The EcoBoost V-6 will offer a fuel economy improvement of up to 20 percent versus the 2010 F-150, and the rest of the available mills will likewise boast significant improvements over the old 5.4. More-efficient engine design is a large part of that claim, but it also stems from other improvements to the F-150.

All 2011 models come standard with the 6R80 six-speed automatic transmission first seen in the Super Duty line. Ford says the gearbox’s more widely spaced ratios offer better off-the-line acceleration and better top-end fuel economy. For those who think they can do better than the engine computer—or who drop heavy loads on the hitch—the 6R80 offers a toggle switch on the shifter stalk to affect manual gear changes. We predict that, given the broad power band boasted by the new lineup of engines, this is one feature that won’t get much use.

    Review

Coming from a Toyota/Honda - you WILL be disappointed in a Ford. Sure, it has more gadgets, flashy interior, updated styling, etc.. but the maintenance and expensive repairs will eat you alive. Compare either at 100K miles and the difference is clear. The Good: Big fuel tank, means less stops. Interior is nice, Color (Mine is Blue) is really nice. Big back seat area. Also, I was able to get 21-22mpg out of mine during road trips. The Mediocre: Handling and Suspension is just meh. Lackluster is the word. Also, the traction control is a joke compared to my old 2013 Tundra. In 2wd, I was getting stuck in the exact same places that my Tundra would just crawl through without any wheel spin. The Ford would dig a hole and then cut engine power. The 5.0 Engine seems weak for the size of the truck, it does the job, but struggles with a small trailer or load in the bed. The Bad: At 86K miles, this truck needs MAJOR work. It's sad. Rear main seal is leaking enough to leave spots in the driveway. Steering Rack needs replaced due to the "Service Advance Trac" light that is coming on almost daily, which leaves a dead spot in the steering and cuts off the turn signals as well. These are issues that most trucks had covered under the factory warranty, so known issues, but these issues didn't pop up until later. The driveline has a gnarly clunk when leaving from a light or during heavy acceleration. Was told it needed a new driveshaft and slip yoke. Power Steering lines are starting to leak around the fittings. Why this truck is a total turd: For the money, this thing just cant compete with a Tundra. I can get a 2015 Tundra Limited with many more features, a bullet proof driveline, and better warranty and service. The local ford dealer is kind enough, but acknowledge that these issues are known in these trucks, but can't do anything for us. Toyota has always taken care of it's customers, many times well after warranty if it's a known issue. Not finding that kind of support from Ford unfortunately. Resale - ugh... I'm looking at losing 6.5K in just 1/2 a year, in order to avoid all these costly repairs (totalling nearly 5K in just 6 months) from trade-in value. However, given that I simply don't have faith in either the Manufacturer or the product, it's a loss worth taking to get away from this vehicle.

  • 2011 Ford F-150 EcoBoost Review - Consumer Reports

The biggest news from Ford's freshening of the 2011 F-150 is the addition of the 3.5-liter, direct-injection, twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine to the top-selling vehicle's lineup. This high-tech engine marks a radical departure in a traditionally V8-driven market segment. We recently completed our full testing of two versions of the updated F-150, to see how the V6 fares in a V8 world.

Consumers have embraced the EcoBoost technology, with initial trucks sales being stronger than expected. (See for yourself by spotting all of those EcoBoost trucks on the road by their offset front license plate, which allows airflow to the giant intercooler.)

So what does the EcoBoost engine get you for its $750 price premium over the also-new 5.0-liter V8? While the V6 has a slight horsepower gain (365 vs. 360 hp), the bigger change is torque. The EcoBoost has 40 more pound-feet of maximum torque at a lower 1,750 rpm. Finally, EPA fuel economy ratings are 1 mpg city/2 highway higher for the EcoBoost.

How do all of these numbers play out in the real world? To find out, we bought two nearly identical 2011 F-150 XLT 4x4 Supercrew trucks to test here at our track. Other than engine and axle ratio differences, the only variation in equipment between the two trucks was that the EcoBoost had Ford's convenient integrated trailer brake controller. Our V8 stickered at $39,395; the EcoBoost came in at $40,410.

A note on axle ratios: Our EcoBoost has a 3.31 rear axle ratio while our F-150 5.0-liter V8 has a 3.55. Changing that ratio affects payload and tow capacities. Regardless of the difference, our two trucks were well matched when it came to capability. Maximum towing was within 500 pounds (7,700 for the V8, 8,200 for the EcoBoost) and max payload differed by all of 30 pounds.

    Version 0-60 mph (sec) 45-65 mph (sec) CR overall fuel economy (mpg) 3.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V6 7.7 4.5 15 5.0-liter V8 7.8 4.8 15

Is the EcoBoost faster? Not really. There is a slight advantage in 45-65 mph passing times but other acceleration measurements are nearly identical.

Is the EcoBoost more fuel efficient? Not in our tests. Despite the different EPA numbers, both trucks got 15 mpg overall in our extensive measured fuel economy tests. (See how we test fuel economy.) The F-150s did pretty well for a truck, tying the Toyota Tundra 5.7-liter for best-in-class full-size truck fuel economy.

Why buy the EcoBoost? In a word, torque. In a second word, towing. The EcoBoost engine is more relaxed to drive with better mid-range oomph. This makes a big difference when you're hooked up to a trailer.

To compare the two trucks, we hitched up a 7,500-pound enclosed car trailer. We then clocked 0-60 mph acceleration and 45-65 mph passing times at our track. We also measured fuel economy while towing over a 33-mile mixed driving loop that combined steep hills, rolling two-lane roads, and some highway stretches.

    Version 0-60 mph towing a 7,500-lb. trailer (sec) 45-65 mph towing a 7,500-lb. trailer (sec) Fuel economy towing a 7,500-lb. trailer, mixed tow loop (mpg) 3.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V6 16.2 10.1 10 5.0-liter V8 17.8 11.3 10

The towing tests are where the EcoBoost proved its mettle. The twin-turbo V6 is quicker than the V8; that added performance aids merging into traffic, reducing the white-knuckle factor. Towing performance actually rivals that of some turbodiesel heavy-duty¾-ton trucks.

Subjectively the EcoBoost felt much more capable than the 5.0-liter. The V8 had to work hard on the hills; one long hill on a 65-mph highway required flooring the accelerator pedal to maintain speed. By contrast, the EcoBoost was quiet and relaxed, rarely going over 2,500 rpm. It simply downshifted a gear or two to keep up. Fuel economy while towing was the same for the two trucks.

The EcoBoost’s performance while towing wasn’t a total surprise: We had towed smaller trailers with our Ford Flex Limited and Lincoln MKT and were impressed. But our F-150 tests show that its performance scales up to the heavier pickup and heavier trailers. (Read “Flexing trailer-towing EcoBoost muscles” and “2010 Lincoln MKT: Towing with EcoBoost.”

So, which engine should you buy?If you don’t tow much, the 5.0-liter V8 is a pleasant engine with a great sounding exhaust note. It’s a solid improvement over the old 5.4-liter V8. While turbochargers have gotten a lot more reliable over time, there is no denying that the V8 is a simpler engine. But if towing performance is important, spending that extra $750 will make lugging a trailer around a lot more enjoyable.

With new engines for 2011, a high-quality interior and great safety scores, the 2011 Ford F-150 is an excellent choice among 2011 full-size pickups.

The 2011 Ford F-150 is ranked:

#2 in Used Full Size Trucks $25K and up #3 in 2011 Full Size Pickup Trucks

Reviewers said the updates to the F-150 for 2011 brought it back to the top of the pack. They said its ride is comfortable, refined and solid. Reviewers were impressed with the new engines, and said the base V6 is a better choice than rivals’ V6 engines. The three available engines also received high marks from reviewers, especially the EcoBoost V6, which critics said makes the F-150 feel especially fast. A two-wheel drive F-150 with the base V6 achieves 17/23 mpg city/highway, which is a bit better than most key rivals’ fuel economy. The EcoBoost V6, which is the most powerful engine offered in the 2011 F-150, gets only slightly worse ratings of 16/22 mpg. The F-150 can tow up to 11,300 pounds, which is one of the highest ratings in the class. The off-road-oriented SVT Raptor model received the 6.2-liter V8 standard for 2011.

Reviewers said the F-150’s cabin is well-designed, well-built and uses mostly quality materials. A regular cab F-150 has seats for up to three people, while Super Cab (extended) and SuperCrew cabs can seat up to six people. Reviewers said the front seats are supportive and comfortable. Few reviewers commented on the Super Cab’s back seats, but those who tested the SuperCrew said the back seats are comfortable and spacious. Like most full-size trucks, the base XL trim has few standard features. Available features included Ford’s SYNC system, a backup camera, Bluetooth, an upgraded stereo, satellite radio, leather seats, heated and power-adjustable front bucket seats and dual-zone climate control. Ford also offered unique features for those in the construction industry, like Tool Link, Cable Lock and Crew Chief.

The 2011 F-150 has one of the highest safety scores in the class.

    Other Trucks to Consider

Reviewers recommended truck buyers look at the 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 for its refined cabins and impressive engines. The Sierra also has a good reliability score for the class.

The 2011 Toyota Tundra has good reliability and safety scores for the class. Reviewers also said that models with the 5.7-liter V8 are among the fastest trucks in the segment.
