Parts shortage slows Ford F-150 production - Kansas City Star

Ford Motor Co. is scrambling to find enough steel frames to keep up with demand for its best-selling F-150 truck. — to build the frames for the redesigned aluminum-bodied truck, which is produced at Ford’s Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo and at a plant in Dearborn, Mich. The Wall Street Journal reported over the weekend that the frame’s main supplier, Mexico-based Metalsa SA, was having trouble building enough of the parts to keep pace with production needs. With frames in short supply, Ford has had to cancel planned overtime at the plants, and has temporarily halted assembly lines during regular shifts as workers waited for more frames to arrive, the Journal said. Ford has resorted to shipping the frames by truck rather than rail to get them there faster, but at a higher cost, the newspaper said. Ford has been dealing with the frame shortage for several months, and tight F-150 inventories on dealer lots have allowed rivals to gain truck business. Ford declined to directly comment Monday on the frame shortages. Ford began building the more fuel-efficient, aluminum-bodied F-150 at Dearborn late last year. Source: www.kansascity.com

DETROIT, MI - Ford Performance engineers have spent some time in Northern Michigan this summer trail testing prototypes of the all-new F-150 Raptor. In the video below, an early engineering prototype that has parts from a 2017 Raptor and from a 2015 F-150 can be seen climbing through some of the Pleasant Peninsula's muddy two-tracks. The all-new Ford F-150 Raptor was first unveiled in Detroit last January. The offroad performance truck will be built at Ford's Dearborn Truck plant. It's set to arrive at dealerships in fall 2016. Like the new-for-2015 Ford F-150, the Raptor is being made with a steel frame and military-strength aluminum alloy body that Ford says saves about 500 lbs of weight. It's six inches wider than the standard F-150. . The new Raptor also comes standard with 3. 0-inch FOX Racing Shox with custom internal bypass technology. Aluminum Versus Steel: Ferrous Fights Back with AHSS - ENGINEERING.com

The folks at the Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI) dropped me a line to point out that advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) are responsible for significant performance improvements and weight reductions in current vehicle platforms. The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu for example uses AHSS to allow a four-inch wheelbase stretch while cutting 300 pounds of weight compared to the 2015 model. The 2016 Nissan Maxima has even dropped 82 pounds with greater torsional rigidity using high-strength steels. Does this mean that steels can compete toe-to-toe with aluminum in automotive body construction. A major advantage of steel is its formability, and the new high-strength grades promise this along with sufficient strength to allow down gauging for weight reduction. Adding strength while maintaining enough ductility when stamping sheets into complex forms is a factor in mass production body stamping. Tailored, laser welded blanks put the thickness just where it’s needed in a large and complex die, and high-strength steels can be spot welded using conventional equipment. Those tailored blanks, for example, might compete with thicker section single-gauge aluminum blanks, which might be strip or coil fed, lowering costs. Source: www.engineering.com
