1980 - 1986 Ford F-Series Pickup Trucks At first glance, you might think the redesigned 1980 F-Series looks a lot like trucks from the previous generation, but examine the pickups more closely and you'll see that they are shorter and narrower,... Wind tunnel testing helped Ford determine where rounded lines and altered panel fit would reduce wind drag. Using plastic for the trucks' front inner fender panels added to the overall weight reduction, and also eliminated an area prone to rust. Ford tackled another rust-prone area by redesigning cab and bed areas to minimize spots where dirt and mud could accumulate. Ford moved the F-Series ignition switch to the steering column and incorporated a steering lock into the assembly. The 400 and 460 cu. in. engines were removed from the line-up, leaving the 300 cu. in. 6-cylinder and 302 and 351 cu. in. Jeep's replacement for both its Willys pickup and the FC (Forward Control) truck was the Gladiator pickup. The Gladiator was a much more modern full-size pickup than Jeep's earlier workhorses. The earliest Gladiators used an advanced six-cylinder engine, while larger V-8 engines were optional throughout the life of the Gladiator and later J-10 and J-20 trucks. The largest was the AMC 401 V-8—the biggest engine ever offered in a Jeep pickup. By 1976, the J-trucks received a new frame, and an awesomely disco "Honcho" package became available in the late 70s. The rarest and coolest of all the J-trucks of this generation would be the stepside bed Honchos of 1980-1983—only 1264 were made. The Chalet was a pop-up camper body made by Chinook that slid into the cargo hold of a 4WD Blazer and provided sleeping accommodations for two. Modifying vintage pickups is a family affair - Driving

Young and not-so-young family members are turning these former farm haulers and tradesmen’s trucks into full customs and restomods. Maple Ridge resident Glen Teager has been displaying his amazing 1956 Ford F100 pickup at local shows after he and father Gary spent five years working together. Glen is also helping a buddy put together another 1956 Ford pickup truck. In Langley, custom upholsterer Don Whitfield, with sons Steve and Geordie, are adding the finishing touches on their 1955 Chevy pickup packing 450 hp under the hood. His uncle in Kelowna had bought a 1956 Ford pickup and taken it apart years before. When it became available, Glen and Gary, made two trips to Kelowna to bring home the parts, pieces, body and frame of the old truck. Since the truck had been taken down to nothing, the cab, body parts and the frame went to the sandblaster to be taken down to bare metal. Some replacement panels were welded in, fenders mended and other bodywork done as father and son grafted a 1980 Chrysler New Yorker frame and torsion bar front suspension onto the original truck frame. Custom motor mounts were then welded into the frame and a rebuilt 302 engine and automatic. Source: driving.ca
