One of the most appealing qualities of old trucks is that they are simple, which generally makes them reliable—and easy to fix when they are less than reliable. That was the situation we were in with our Cheap Truck Challenge Ford F-150, Raymond (“Raymond,” Oct. This is a simple truck, with a manual transmission, a carbureted engine, and no computers to speak of. As we looked for the cause of the issue we thought we found the smoking gun more than once, with loose wires, poor grounding, and household wire... This would eliminate all of the wire nuts and Scotchlok connectors and upgrade our old glass fuses to modern mini blade fuses. Since this is a “universal” harness the wires are longer than necessary, it has wiring for items like air conditioning that our truck doesn’t need, and it does not come with any plugs for the taillights or factory gauges. We underestimated just how big of a project this would be, and our truck was down for nearly a month while we devoted a couple of nights a week to rewiring the Ford. Since we were revamping the electrical system, we added a high-output, one-wire alternator from Summit at the same time. Source: www.fourwheeler.com

Cars and Stars invades Graham - Graham Leader

Though the fifth annual Potter's Pizza Cars and Stars show on the Square saw less-than-expected registration due to threatening weather, organizers, participants and attendees said the event lived up to its growing reputation. Entrants began piling in to the Graham Square early Saturday morning, April 11, and judging began at noon. Event organizer Branden Cornelius said that there were about 150 cars registered for this year's show, and that, combined with a dense, auto-centric itinerary, made this year's Potter's Pizza Cars and Stars one to remember. From the west side of the Square Saturday morning, Cornelius made sure to mention both performing bands, the Dynaflows and the Octanes, both of which performed prior to the 3 p. m. awards ceremony. Drew Hays, bassist for the Austin based rock band The Octanes, the second band to perform in front of the Young County Courthouse Saturday, said that this year marked the band's third to play Cars and Stars. Following the judging and award portion of the show, a long procession of cars embarked on a cruise that toured Young County up to Newcastle and then headed back to Graham, where participants and attendees made camp at the Graham Drive In for an... Mike Winslow was on the Square Saturday with his purple Datsun 280zx that he said his son won in a raffle. Winslow said he's keeping the highly-modified car while his son is in England and that so far it's been in several car shows and several races. Source: www.grahamleader.com

Went and looked at a '77 F-100 today. It's pretty straight, just a little bump on the passenger fender that caught the edge of the grille too, and a rotted out driver floorpan. The only rust is in the floor though. That and the tailgate is stuck. Front bumper is a little crazy. But it's still got devent factory paint on it. The interior is bare-bones, but aside from some severe wear in the seat it all seems complete. The shifter (3 on the column) is nice and tight, although the clutch sits very near the floor. Owner said something about a return spring, but I've never seen one (I'm not familiar with older clutch setups either). The clutch still releases, however. The 302 didn't much want to start, but it did start with starting fluid and if he held the throttle in it would run and it seemed to rev ok. I was thinking maybe choke issue since it did rev alright. Wouldn't hold idle even after it ran a minute though. He's looking to get $1000 out of it. Any thoughts?

Carb rebuild time, idle circuits are messed up. Start at $500 and maybe go up $750.

Hopefully later this week I can go back down and take it for a drive. Something that drives well seems to be worth significantly more than a truck that just sits there and doesn't want to start. It's odd that each of the 5 carburated Fords I've looked at in the 2 weeks has had carb problems. I guesss it has to be something in the fuel.

Yeah that doesn't hardly seem worth $1000 to me. Although, to find a 77 that isn't completely rotted is becoming more and more rare. I would say if you can get it to drive it might be worth $750, but if it won't drive or stay running then $500. Either way, $1000 seems a little lofty.

We only let it run about a minute. It was running on its own, just have to keep giving it gas. I'm going to go down saturday when it's nice and warm and see if I can get it to idle and take it for a drive. If it drives out nice, I'll offer $800 and see what he says. I can't believe these trucks really aren't worth anything.

The clutch pedal should adjust up. Done it before. These trucks can be worth something, just depends where you're at. I'm in the Midwest, so a decent one is harder to find and more expensive than one would be in Texas or something. 4x4 dent sides seem to bring more here. 500-800 should be ok for a project truck, more if it was running good and driving.

Just the project rigs arn't worth much, and 4x4 is worth at least double a 2wd most of the time... the one you described sounds like a $400-600 truck to me, no more, no less... If your using starting fluid on it, it CAN AND WILL become dependent on it to start... and the only way to cure that is with a full rebuild of the motor....(that i know of)
