A 1940s Toronto photo extravaganza - blogTO (blog)

what a great collection: I was raised on top of the A. E. Osler Building at 11 Jordan St. (now covered by the 'new' Imperial Bank of Commerce) at Melinda and Jordan. I remember the newspaper 'boys' at the corner of King and Yonge outshouting each other for the business: "Star and Telly. get your Star and Telly here. All 3 of us worked in the Eaton's building on Albert St. Not there now, but the entrance was just about opposite where Scholes Hotel was and just down from the first Cocktail Bar in Toronto, "The Silver Rail". On our "breaks" at work we would all meet at the "Hub" in the basement of Eatons for coffee and a cigarette. Eaton's never sold cigarettes. None of us knew cigarettes were harmful. 5 things you didn't know were underground in Toronto - blogTO (blog)

* "the only of its kind in Canada" -> "the only one of its kind in Canada". * " (visits by reporters are no welcome,) " -> " (visits by reporters are not welcome), ". Clarification:. "produce tonnes of garbage every single day" -- maybe hundreds, or thousands of tonnes. Further on hidden "bowling alleys" in churches. United Church (S side of Queen W. across from Euclid Ave. ) had a few lanes which we teens from the youth group were allowed to use back in the early '60's. You had to leave the gym area (yes a gym in a church) and proceed easterly through an underground tunnel to the bowling alley. Here's a news flash for you - during the Cold War, we were not just living in close proximity to potential targets like Detroit and Buffalo, Toronto WAS a Soviet strategic nuclear target. And here's an even more shocking revelation for you - Toronto still is a strategic nuclear target for Russian Federation long-range nuclear missiles. Source: www.blogto.com
