Byrne's runs at 390 cubic inches (6. 3 litres) and has an 255 horsepower big-block engine, and is a two-door three-speed automatic. He has replaced the wheels with new mag wheels, however, and "getting the convertible roof reupholstered is the next job on the list," he adds. It was also "converted to right-hand-drive, likely when it was imported to New Zealand," says Byrne. Its size also reflects the ideal "big American car" of that era. It stands at 5. 30 metres long and 2. 07 metres wide. It handles well, however, and is now used by Byrne as a cruising car. " says Byrne. "It drives very well, and sounds like a V8 should. The quintessential sound of the V8 engine seems to hold a lot of appeal for classic car owners, and Byrne cited it as one of his favourite aspects of the Galaxie. Although not your stereotypical muscle car, the 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix packed plenty of performance. The '69 Grand Prix was offered with either a 400-cubic-inch V-8 or a 428-cubic-inch, high-output V-8. The 400 engine could be ordered in 265, 350, or 370 horsepower flavors while the 428 H. O. engine put out a respectable 390 horsepower. The Grand Prix here is equipped with the 350-horsepower, 400-cubic-inch V-8 and a three-speed automatic. In addition to being an oddball muscle car, the example we have here is a one-owner car. Bought in 1969 and garage-kept its entire life, this Grand Prix could be one of a kind. In the 1980s he was a wrench for race teams in Europe, and now, as a restorer for the IMS Museum's... That would be racing icon Mark Donohue, at the time an up-and-comer. In late 1965, he and his pal, veteran driver Walt Hansgen, attended Ford's annual motorsport banquet honoring anyone who had won a race with a Ford engine. Donohue had won amateur SCCA events that year in a Mustang Shelby GT 350. Hansgen and Donohue approached Ford racing brass, but they felt Donohue was not ready to be part of Henry the Deuce's revenge on Enzo Ferrari. At Daytona that year, Holman asked Donohue whether he had ever driven 200 mph and raced on high banking. Donohue figured an SCCA Shelby Mustang on high banking didn't count, and said "no" to both questions. The pair finished third in Holman Moody Mark II chassis 1031.
