KALAMAZOO, MI -- Pictures of her daughter surround Irene Patrick in her home in Florida, accolades and certificates serve as mementos of what was to be a promising life of service. And Irene is left with her grief, to fight away the pain of losing one of her children and wrestle with the anger that still consumes her a year after Teleka, 30, was found drowned in a small lake in northwestern Indiana. The family is left to ponder what might have been for Patrick, a brilliant medical student who, despite her many accomplishments, was by many accounts on the brink of a mental breakdown when she disappeared. They also have been comforted, Irene Patrick says, by the cards she receives ever so often from people she has never met, expressing their condolences over the loss of Teleka, as well as admiration for the young doctor.
