A three-vehicle crash on the Long Key Bridge involving a fully loaded dump truck closed a portion of U. S. 1 for more than two hours Tuesday morning, according to Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Kathleen McKinney. According to reports, the driver of a silver Chevy Silverado was passing numerous vehicles while speeding northbound on the highway’s southbound lane. At Mile Marker 64, the truck swerved back into the northbound lane to avoid running into the dump truck, according to reports. As the driver of the dump truck, Gilbert Fernandez, of Key Largo, tried to brake and turn to the right to avoid the pickup, the vehicle’s rear axle brake drum came apart and two tires detached.
