Reader Review: 2014 Toyota Tacoma - Driving

If you like a pickup, but don’t require full-size truck capability, Calgary outdoor enthusiast Glenn Ruskin thinks the mid-size 2014 Toyota Tacoma could be the practical answer. “And, it would be great for the weekday downtown commuter who likes to get out on weekends – with four doors and plenty of cargo space, one wonders if one really needs a full-size pickup. Following the Stout in 1967 was the Hilux, and this compact truck became one of the most popular “mini” haulers on the market. By the time 1975 rolled around, Toyota had dropped the Hilux moniker, and their small truck became simply the Toyota Pickup – this model ran until the introduction of the Tacoma in 1995. First generation Tacoma’s were offered with a 2. 4L... No longer a compact truck, Toyota began marketing the Tacoma as a mid-size pickup. Currently, two engines are offered, a 2. 7L DOHC four-cylinder and a 4. 0L DOHC V6, mated to either five or six-speed manual gearboxes, or four or five-speed automatic transmissions – depending on model configuration.
