2011-2013 Chevrolet Caprice, 2008-2009 Pontiac G8 Recalled For Seatbelt Flaw - The Car Connection

General Motors has announced a recall of select 2011-2013 Chevrolet Caprice and 2008-2009 Pontiac G8 vehicles. ALSO SEE: 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 First Look. The problem stems from components manufactured by German supplier ZF. In a report posted by NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation, the agency notes that those components can be unknowingly damaged by passengers during normal use of a vehicle. "In certain seating positions, the safety belt’s flexible steel cable (or “tensioner cable”) can be located in a forward position allowing the occupant to sit on top of it while entering the vehicle. This action can bend the steel cable over the seat side shield, which over time may cause the cable to fatigue and separate. 2011-2013 Chevrolet Caprice vehicles built between October 15, 2010 and October 22, 2013 2008-2009 Pontiac G8 vehicles built between July 25, 2007 and February 18, 2009 All told, the recall affects. What precautions need to be taken to protect the vehicle's electrical system when I weld the cab frame. MIG welding is dangerously bright, and without proper eye protection, you could blind yourself. "MIG" stands for "metal inert gas. " It uses a thin wire and bathes it in an inert gas to push all of the oxygen out of the way. That keeps the surrounding metal from oxidizing, and allows you to seamlessly and smoothly weld metal together. Which electronic components you need to protect depends on how old your truck is. If it's old enough to have a metal dashboard -- from the 1950s or '60s -- then there aren't really any electrons to protect. So you'll want to get under the dashboard and move away any wires that are in the vicinity of the weld. You also might take a picture of the wiring under there so that when you do melt the wires, you'll have an easier time rewiring everything. I also would use some sort of insulating material -- like a piece of sheet metal -- between the welding site and anything you might set fire to.
