BMW has long made machines that embody its “Ultimate Driving Machine” motto, but some of its more recent products have been more emblematic of the company’s other, softer, and less focused tagline, “Joy. Given the brilliance of nearly every other BMW, the unfocused handling of what should be one of the company’s sportiest cars is even more of a bummer. It’s ostensibly the Z4 for those who want an Ultimate Driving Machine, so why throw more thrust—35 hp in this case—at a car that already has plenty and not fix the disappointing chassis. It’s no coincidence that BMW announced its new 335is in the same time frame as it did the Z4 sDrive35is. The N54 was good for 300 hp and 300 lb-ft in its previous, more ordinary applications, but all the “aye ess” cars receive software that cranks up the turbo boost, for a total output in the Z4 of 335 hp at 5900 rpm and 332 lb-ft of torque from 1500... Mash your right foot to the floor, and a computer-controlled overboost function will provide a seven-second gust of 37 additional lb-ft of torque. If the engine computer is satisfied with turbo temperatures and other vital signs, the incremental torque boost can be accessed over and over again under wide-open throttle. In nearly a year since then, we’ve also been impressed with the car dynamically, awarding it a second-place finish in our most recent comparo of four luxury droptops, just behind our longtime favorite Porsche Boxster S. For the 2010 Detroit show ,... Just when we thought BMW’s convoluted naming scheme couldn’t get any longer, the company resurrects the “is” suffix and tacks it onto the sDrive35 badge. We're surprised the company didn't call it a Z4 M. Until this year, BMW M cars all had engines distinct from those in standard BMWs, but the X5 M and X6 M—which share the guts of their V-8s with more pedestrian BMW models—have already crossed that... Tuners have proven it time and again: the twin-turbo BMW inline-six is capable of more than the factory-provided 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. BMW is now ready to admit as much, apparently, and has given the engine better intake breathing and higher boost pressure for new output of 335 hp at 5900 rpm and 332 lb-ft from 1500 rpm, with overboost providing quick bursts of 369 lb-ft. the sDrive35is will be available only with BMW’s seven-speed double-clutch transmission. BMW's 2018 Z4 replacement will have Toyota Supra bones, heart of an M4 - Digital Trends

The Bavarian carmaaker started with the retro Z3, switched to the avant grade first-generation Z4, and then decided to go in a more luxurious direction with the current Z4. What will BMW think of next. It will be based on the same platform as the forthcoming Toyota Supra successor , as part of an ongoing collaboration between BMW and the Japanese carmaker. BMW will aim to get the Z5’s curb weight down, and will even ditch the current car’s retractable hardtop for a simpler soft top. Power will be provided by BMW’s 2. 0-liter turbocharged inline-four in different states of tune. Alternatively, BMW could stick a six-cylinder engine, or even a three-cylinder, under the hood. However, BMW may also build a high-performance M version, using the 425-hp, twin-turbocharged inline-six from the 2015 M3 and M4.
