The first wave in BMW’s “X marks the spot” offensive was rolled out back in 1999 with the launch of the X5, and such has been the sales success of the big SUV (or “SAV”, for Sports Activity Vehicle, in BMW speak) that the Bavarian manufacturer... No surprise, then, that the X1 has clocked up 730,000 global sales since its 2009 launch, with vehicles rolling out of assembly plants not only in Germany, but also China, India, Thailand, Mexico and Russia. One consequence of the UAE’s recent petrol price hikes is we might start seeing a few more X1s on our roads, and that’s all the more likely after October 24, when the revamped, second-generation model goes on sale here. Whereas the oldie was based on a derivative of the rear-wheel-drive architecture that underpins the X3 and 3 Series Touring, the new model shares its front-drive-based platform with the Mini line-up, as well as the 2 Series Active Tourer. The BMW X1 , by contrast, is closer in look and feel to a passenger car. Overall, though, we were happy with the compromise—compared with other compact crossovers, the X1 is less of an SUV but more of a BMW. One look at the BMW X1, and the proportions tell you that this vehicle doesn’t use the typical crossover architecture. One might point out that a BMW X3 has the same mechanical package, but the BMW X1 is different because it’s so much lower. 8-inch overall height falls midway between an X3 (66. 1 inches) and a 328xi Sport Wagon (56. 5 inches). That low overall height, longitudinal engine layout, and near 50/50 weight distribution are key factors that make the X1 drive like a BMW rather than like a typical SUV. And when we say drive like a BMW, the BMW we’re thinking about is the 3 Series wagon. “The X1’s low-slung proportions and long hood make it look like a 3 Series wagon that has had its height increased by about 25 percent—no bad thing,” said associate Web editor Jake Holmes. ” Getting even more specific, we found that the BMW X1 drives like a previous-generation (2006-2012) 3 Series wagon—which is not surprising, given that the X1 is. The new X1, which will be built with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, says otherwise. The new X1 is better looking , roomier, more efficient and practical, and comes with more advanced driver-assist tech than the rear-drive based model it will replace in October. And, despite sharing much of its innards with the latest generation of Mini models — BMW owns the Brit brand — the X1 is not at all bad to drive. BMW uses its new-generation modular turbo engines in all X1 models. The front-drive sDrive 18d (110kW turbo diesel) and sDrive 20i (141kW turbo petrol) badges remain, as does the all-wheel drive xDrive 20d (140kW turbo diesel). Although Australians prefer to buy the current X1 in sDrive form, BMW didn't include any front-drivers in the drive program. The new X1 is taller, and BMW's designers have used the extra height to raise the front and rear seats. In fact, the spaciousness of the BMW is outstanding. BMW has also increased the volume.
