? 2-series convertible arrives in time for summer. Just in time for what will surely be another long, hot British summer of Pimms, parched cricket greens and balmy garden parties, BMW has replaced the 1-series convertible with a drop-top 2. Longer, wider and considerably prettier than the 1-series... On all versions the heavily lined, noise-smothering roof can be had in a range of three colours, drops and reappears in 20 seconds at speeds of up to 30mph and – impressively – fails to ruin the 2-series' sleek styling in either position. Yes and no. For a four-seat BMW it’s not overflowing with space. The cabin and boot may be bigger than those of the outgoing 1-series convertible but rear legroom is tight, access to the back seats challenging and boot space fine day-to-day but incapable of taking on the occasional big stuff. But think of the 2-series as practical sports car, rather than an impractical coupe, and it makes a lot more sense. Drop the roof, nudge the car into Sport or Sport Plus modes (the throttle response. With a crackling, snarling exhaust note that signals it as an unapologetic bad boy, there’s a healthy lack of the “bean-counter syndrome” that has diluted the Bavarian brand’s contemporary offerings. In recent years, BMWs have seemingly been tailored to avoid alienating anyone – even the most sedate, non-car-loving buyers. You’d think the barnstorming M5 and M6 would be rewarding driver’s cars, but as fast and capable as they are, there’s a lack of tactility and driver involvement that makes them come across as somewhat remote and aloof. In case you’re wondering about the M235i moniker, it’s in keeping with BMW’s new nomenclature – whereby all coupé models are denoted by an even number as the first digit. The M235i replaces the old two-door 135i and hardcore 1-Series M Coupé that were discontinued in 2013, and effectively fills the void left by both these models, as it’s every bit as rapid as the much-loved and highly rated “1M”. Drop the soft-top and you'll warm to this convertible - even in the cold. Doing it in a convertible in Melbourne in June adds another couple of layers to the experience — not least the fact the trucks funnel the seasonably brisk wind straight at you. Did I mention the top was down and the roads were wet, so that wind was laden with tiny droplets of road grime-infused water. The soft-top on this particular machine — BMW's new and shiny 2 Series convertible — takes 20 seconds to pop out of the boot and clamp on to the windscreen and can be operated at up to 50km/h (not that we'd recommend it). Show a modicum of common... In most other respects it is a typical two-door, four-seat convertible. and the roof's huge side panels and a tiny back window mean rear vision is pretty much non-existent. It is the price you pay for buying a car as a fashion accessory and it is one many people are willing to accept. Love or loathe convertibles, people look at them and/or the people in them. BMW's latest looker has three tiers, from the 220i at $54,900 up to $85,800 for the M235i.
