I can’t believe I’m typing this sentence, but I’m sitting in the press box at Busch, the “toothbrush” stadium lights illuminating the night, while I write my first column for the Post-Dispatch. I used to read Word Up Magazine, and Bernie Miklasz’s columns in the Post-Dispatch. Sure, we all read Bernie, but I wanted to be Bernie – the irresistible, unmistakable sports voice of St. Louis. When I became sports columnist for The Denver Post, it felt surreal – surreal. – that Bernie and I had the same job. As he’s moved on to a new venture, imagine how I feel now that I have Bernie’s actual job. it was a BMW … no, I’m kidding, and to be honest, I didn’t even get a car until Mizzou — my mom’s maroon Honda station wagon, which was perfect for lugging luggage across I-70 and for not getting dates). I graduated Mizzou in 2002, and I wrote in New Orleans and Denver before coming home, and man, what a time to opine. The Rams might actually make the playoffs — and then might actually leave. Oh, and perhaps the top prep basketball player in the land is our town’s Jayson Tatum, and homegrown soccer studs Becky Sauerbrunn and Lori Chalupny recently won the World Cup. Louis sports. Today is the kind of day I moved to California for. Virgin blue skies overhead, a salty hint of the ocean pervades a full mile inland, and the fresh sunlight clashes against the chrome of my newly acquired vintage BMW. I’m enjoying this stereotypically beautiful day carving through mountain roads in my 1970 BMW 2002, and I want this moment to continue forever. As an offering to the sun gods, I blip the throttle and invoke all the spits and snarls of Vesuvius as I bear down on a blind mountain corner at a truly laughable rate. Some people believe that I have an addiction to this kind of speed—an insatiable defect that propels me to push a machine’s limits. I have the kind of brain that never stops churning. Pushing and pushing, I seek all this ancient BMW has to offer. Either I am going to win, or inertia is. The California mountain roads like Mulholland and Topanga are famous for a reason. Taking a vintage steed like this into the California canyons is one of life’s great pleasures. Here is where I become one with my machine. These old BMWs are more a visceral kind of machine. Knockhill BTCC: Andy Priaulx wins frantic pole fight for WSR BMW - autosport.com

The three-time world champion's first ever BTCC pole came at the Scottish track in 2002, and he pulled a record-breaking 51. 671-second lap out of the bag with less than a minute remaining to top qualifying for the second time in his comeback season. Jackson held provisional pole from Priaulx and Matt Neal when the red flags were required after Jeff Smith spun at Scotsman and Dan Welch's suspension failed at Duffus Dip moments apart from each other. Priaulx set a 51. 873s to chisel Jackson's advantage to just three-hundredths of a second, while a flurry of improvements included Sam Tordoff moving into the pole fight. Home favourite and practice pacesetter Gordon Shedden looked set to rise from fifth to do the same as he set two good sector times - but his lap was ruined by Honda team-mate Matt Neal spinning off through Duffus Dip and winding up in the gravel...
