Audi's first electrified car priced from $37900 - CNET

The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, or PHEV, puts its power to the ground through the front wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Audi's signature Quattro all-wheel drive is not available. Audi says charging the 8. 8-kWh lithium-ion battery sandwiched under the rear seat will take around eight hours using a conventional 120-volt household outlet, but an optional Bosch 240-volt home charger can lower charge times to about 2. 25 hours. EPA fuel economy estimates have not yet been released, but Audi says the car will deliver "an expected electric range of between 16 and 19 miles (final technical adjustments are being tested and implemented) from a fully charged battery," which is... Der Audi S8 erhielt ein Plus in der Modellbezeichnung und ein Plus an Leistung. Der Vierliter-V8-Biturbo mit vier Litern Hubraum leistet statt 520 im S8 Plus 605 PS, das Drehmoment lässt sich per Overboost kurzzeitig auf 750 Nm steigern. Mit so viel Motorkraft bewehrt lässt sich die grosse Limousine in 3,8 Sekunden aus dem Stand auf 100 km/h beschleunigen, dies auch dank fein abgestufter 8-Gang-Automatik und Allradantrieb, und trotz zwei Tonnen Leergewicht. Die Höchstgeschwindigkeit, im Einklang mit den Herstellern BMW und Mercedes auf 250 km/h begrenzt, lässt sich optional auf 305 km/h steigern. Denn in der Praxis wird der 5,15 Meter lange Viertürer wohl kaum in solch sportliche Bereiche vorstossen, einerseits weil die Klientel mehr an den Leistungswerten interessiert ist als an der praktischen Umsetzung, und andererseits weil es im... Optisch lässt sich der neue Top-A8 an Design-Details wie einer Spoilerlippe auf dem Heckdeckel, Flaps in den seitlichen Lufteinlässen und einem Frontschürzenelement aus Carbon. Die Schweizer Preise sind noch nicht bekannt, doch dürfte der Aufpreis gegenüber dem S8 aufgrund der aufwendigen Technik zur Leistungssteigerung mit veränderten Auslassventilen und Turboladern mindestens 30'000 Franken ausmachen. 2007 Audi S8 - Long-Term Road Test - Car and Driver (blog)

If you accept the idea that cars can suffer a midlife crisis, then we think you’ll agree that the one experienced by our long-term Audi S8 test car was pretty severe. Here’s the story: With 23,288 miles on the odo, the S8 found itself closely involved in a noisy pas de deux with an elderly minivan, a dance from which neither vehicle emerged in running order. We must mark this down to a judgment error on the part of our pilot, who darted for a left-turn opening that was suddenly occupied by the minivan, which had been screened by a string of large SUVs. Though our driver lamely suggested that the minivan was moving quite briskly, the investigating officer pointed out that whatever its speed, the minivan had right of way, and he issued a citation for failure to yield. The Audi’s airbags did not deploy, and it managed to limp into our parking lot under its own power, but its left-front corner was seriously wrinkled, and coolant was oozing onto the pavement. Putting our S8 back together again took five months (126 hours of labor, ranging from $45 an hour to $100 an hour), involved pulling the engine twice, and cost $29,969 [ see sidebar ]. It makes you wanna lie down. Prior to these tribulations, one of our drivers tossed a water bottle onto the front passenger seat with the lid not quite tight. The bottle quietly drained itself onto the seat, the water found its way into the seat’s electrical system (power adjustability, seat heater), and the seat’s systems shorted out.
