Apart from bringing in new models, the company is also preparing to expand its used car business under Audi Approved Plus with plans to take the total number of outlets to 10 in the next 12 months from three at present. Now we are preparing for the next phase of expansion in India," Audi India Head Joe King told PTI. While he did not share details on investments for the next phase, he said, "it will be announced by the headquarter soon and it will be all-encompassing for the longer term, which includes fresh production capacity and new model line up. The response that we have received from new places like Guwahati and Ranchi are very encouraging," he said, adding Audi India would soon open its showroom in Rajkot. "Although the base is smaller, in tier II and III cities the sales growth rate is around 20-30 per cent, while in metros it is 10 per cent," King said while elaborating on the potential of smaller cities. " His assertion is that, whereas the previous S8 was totally in sync with German buyers, the new S8 falls at least partway between American and German tastes. Indeed, the new S version of Audi's A8 luxury liner is bolder, sportier, and more audacious. The previous S8, sold in the States from 2001 to 2003, challenged all but the most dedicated Audi spotter, as its visual giveaways were limited to a slightly lower ride height. A series of vertical bars has been added to its grille-Brabec's last achievement, added just months before the design was finalized. There are special wheels, of course, twenty inches in diameter and wrapped in 35-series performance rubber. The most dramatic distinction, however, is under the hood, where Audi has installed its first-ever V-10 engine, adapted from the one in corporate sibling Lamborghini's Gallardo. Audi enlarges it from 5. 0 to 5. 2 liters and fits FSI gasoline direct injection. Such is the absurdity of the German horsepower race, however, that ten cylinders, 444 hp, and 398 lb-ft of torque still leave the S8 trailing rivals such as the BMW M5 (whose own V-10 is good for 500 hp) and the Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG (with 493 hp... well, the trunk capacity is somewhat limited for a full-size luxury sedan. If only we had the German Autobahn here to truly enjoy an automobile like the Audi S8. But even without our own speed-limit-free highway, it doesn’t take long to determine that the S8 is one of the best automobiles on the planet. If the next generation proves to be even better, we certainly have something special to look forward to. In Audi-speak, I like to think of the ‘S’ designation as standing for sporty and speedy. It’s the performance version of a particular model and that’s what differentiates the S8 from Audi’s flagship A8 sedan. The A8 is an outstanding vehicle in its own right, but with the ‘S’ designation, you add exceptional performance to the ultra-luxury features of the base model. All this power and luxury certainly comes at a premium, but for anyone with pockets deep enough to afford the S8, it’s a price worth paying. For a full-size luxury sedan the S8 is just as comfortable carving through the twisties on winding back roads as it is on the highway thanks in part to Audi’s famed quattro permanent all-wheel drive that transfers power from front to back and side...
