2011 Ford F-150 EcoBoost Rated at 16 MPG City, 22 HighwayImage by blog.caranddriver.com
Ford EcoBoost: 5 Million Strong - Automoblog.net (blog)
In 2009, there were about 14,500 engines with Ford’s EcoBoost namesake. At the time, I was a Master Certified Sales Consultant at Sioux Falls Ford in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. All of us sales guys loved the power of the EcoBoost but the quantities on the lot were certainly limited. A client of mine, in 2010, admitted they thought the leaf on the EcoBoost logo meant it was “ some sort of new hybrid. It appeared to many at the time Ford was literally betting the farm by putting the EcoBoost in their number one seller. Deep down, I knew the EcoBoost F-150 was going to be successful but I never predicted it would redefine Ford’s stance in the automotive industry. I don’t think any dealership in 2011 anticipated the demand for EcoBoost F-Series trucks would grow so high. Today, EcoBoost technology is available in every passenger vehicle Ford creates. Triple Threat Regardless of displacement, EcoBoost engines share common character traits, particularly in how they make use of fuel and air. Source: www.automoblog.net
2015 Ford F-150 EcoBoost 2.7L EPA-Estimated at 19/26 MPG - Motor Trend
The 2015 Chevrolet Colorado also achieves excellent fuel economy, with the 2. 5-liter I-4 model with the six-speed automatic rated at 20/27 mpg. However, Ford stresses that the F-150 is much more capable, with the ability to tow 1100 lbs. In addition to releasing those numbers, Ford also announced that the aluminum trucks should be arriving in dealers soon, and that some customers will be driving F-150s around as early as next week. The automaker expressed that once they go on sale, it'll expect the take rate on EcoBoost-equipped models to be about 40 percent, while it also expressed disinterest in putting a diesel in the F-150 since diesel fuel can be more expensive. 2011 f150 EcoBoost 58,000 miles stumbles misfires loss of power dealer install new spark plugs, truck runs better. I think Ford is learning as they go with ecoboost, it certainly hasn't been trouble free. My thoughts were I definitely paid more at the dealer but this way I can get this engine to run better. Also had trouble with intercooler, dealer installed cover over part of intercooler. We all know you will get better milage with a diesel so why don't we cross that bridge when both Ford and GM decide to throw a diesel power plant in their half ton trucks. Until then let us look at what the new technology Ford is brining to the table which can only benefit the market as a whole and gives the consumer a better product irregardless of what brand you like. Ford F-series Review: 2011 Ford F-150 EcoBoost Drive – Car ...
Major updates to the F-150, already the bestseller in one of the largest market segments, represent a serious gamble for Ford. Pickup-truck buyers, after all, notoriously favor the tried-and-true. With high-tech features like twin turbochargers and direct injection, the 2011 F-150’s EcoBoost V-6 might as well be a hood-mounted tofu dispenser.
Changing the Game
But if there’s one thing truck loyalists like more than the familiar, it’s horsepower and torque, and the EcoBoost whips up a satisfactory 365 hp and 420 lb-ft on regular unleaded. It’s one of four new F-150 powerplants for 2011: a 302-hp, 3.7-liter V-6 is standard; the anemic 310-hp, 5.4-liter V-8 gets chucked for gutsy 5.0- and 6.2-liter V-8s producing 360 and 411 hp. (Click here to see how the new engine lineup compares with those from Chevy and Dodge.) The 6.2-liter “Boss” V-8 is reserved for special high-end F-150s—such as the SVT Raptor—making the EcoBoost V-6 the top-of-the-line engine for volume F-150 buyers.
That means those who want the strongest available mill in a regular Ford truck will have to forsake the V-8 rumble that has defined cab-and-a-box workhorses for decades. Ford understands that traditionalists will take some convincing, and it doesn’t help matters that the EcoBoost will command $1750 more than the 3.7-liter V-6 and $750 more than the 5.0-liter V-8. Regardless of output figures, V-6s don’t make the same chicken-fried music as V-8s.
Deceptively Powerful
Although its fitment in the F-150 is the twin-turbo V-6’s first rear-drive application—it’s also the first turbocharged V-6 in a full-size pickup—it is offered in several other Ford and Lincoln models, where it makes up to 365 hp and 350 lb-ft. Those output figures propel the 4300-pound Taurus SHO to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds. For the F-series, the engine is revised with new turbos and intercoolers, as well as new intake and exhaust manifolds, various revised internals, and new electronic controls for the dual variable valve timing. The EcoBoost, as with all other F-150 engines, is mated solely to Ford’s updated 6R80 six-speed automatic transmission with manumatic shifting; the blown engine is available in nearly every body configuration with either rear- or four-wheel drive.
If you overlook its rather flat exhaust note, it would be easy to mistake the EcoBoost V-6 for a burly V-8. We drove several F-150 models—as well as competitive trucks—both unladen and towing trailers weighing up to 6700 pounds, and the EcoBoost felt noticeably strong and never seemed to run out of breath. Ford says 90 percent of the engine’s torque is on tap from 1700 rpm to 5000. We observed that the new turbos spool up quickly and emit only a slight whistle under load.
Acceleration is almost diesel-like in its relentlessness, and the truck has more than enough in reserve for passing maneuvers, even with a trailer behind. Capable of tugging 11,300 pounds or carrying 3060 in the bed—both best in the segment—the F-150 EcoBoost managed Ford’s trailers with ease, chugging along smoothly in top gear on uphill highway sections.
Little Else New
All F-150s except those with the 6.2-liter V-8 get electrically assisted power steering for 2011, which is another first for a full-size truck. The setup is more efficient than a hydraulic setup and makes for easy low-speed maneuvering, but it offers nil in the way of feel. With little else new for 2011, the F-150 otherwise drives as it did before, which is to say solid and refined but not quite as handily as the Ram 1500, which won our last pickup-truck comparison test in 2009.
The 2011 truck’s interior is much the same as the 2010’s; the biggest update is the addition of an available 4.2-inch information screen in the revised gauge cluster. First seen on the 2011 F-series Super Duty, the new readout features multiple displays for the trip computer and various functions, such as fuel economy, vehicle settings, and trailer-towing details. An off-road setting tracks the truck’s vertical and lateral movements. Like learning a new smartphone, it’s rather overwhelming at first but intuitive and informative once you master the system.
In general, MSRPs increase by about two grand from 2010’s, although exact figures get confusing given the numerous configurations of the six trims available with the EcoBoost. The least expensive EcoBoost variant is a $25,440 regular-cab XL with rear-wheel drive and an eight-foot bed; the priciest is a four-wheel-drive Platinum SuperCrew with a 6.5-foot bed, which starts at $48,770. As with all pickups, options can swell the bottom line considerably.
Although the turbocharged V-6 has the potential to deliver better mileage than a V-8, we’ve noticed in other EcoBoost Fords that their much-touted efficiency increase pretty much disappears when driving with any sort of haste. But that’s less important here than in other segments, since, in truth, most pickup owners accept crappy fuel economy as a part of the deal. Given that, and having now experienced the power and performance of the EcoBoost F-150, we think most potential customers will feel right at home in the driver’s seat.

2011 Ford F-150 FX4 SuperCrew 4x4 EcoBoost V6 Road Test ...
A twin-turbo pickup truck? Well, that just seems silly.
Sure, plenty of pickups have received forced induction—most of them with superchargers, many of them Fords—but the EcoBoost F-150 is a first among production trucks in that it uses a pair of turbos. (GMC’s Syclone, which had a larger V-6, was fed by only one turbocharger. It remains bad-ass.) This also marks the first time Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine has appeared in a rear-wheel-drive product, and it’s perhaps the vehicle in which this engine feels most at home.
Putting EcoBoost in Its Place
Tuned to produce 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque in the F-150, this iteration of the turbo 3.5-liter V-6 trumps those installed in the Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT and MKS. In this truck, however, it feels much more drivable; trucks aren’t the most responsive vehicles in the first place, mitigating what minimal turbo lag exists. The EcoBoost’s plentiful torque is most useful when doing manly pickup-type tasks, like hauling or towing.
Ford has always touted the EcoBoost V-6 as a downsizing measure, claiming V-8 power with V-6 fuel economy. The power is definitely eight-pot comparable—it makes five more hp more than the F-150’s available 5.0-liter and bests that mill by 40 lb-ft of torque with a much lower torque peak—but so, too, is the fuel consumption, especially if you’re in the boost. For example, a 5.0-liter-equipped F-150 got 14 mpg in our hands, the same as this EcoBoost truck. An F-150 with the naturally aspirated 3.7-liter V-6 did only 1 mpg better.
The EcoBoost engine’s primary advantage over the 5.0—and even the Ford 6.2-liter V-8—is fleetness; of course, that requires a heavy foot. This 4x4 SuperCrew completed the 0-to-60-mph sprint in 6.1 seconds, the 5.0 we tested took 6.7, and a 411-hp 6.2-liter needed 6.3. None of those times is slow, and it should be noted that you can’t really go wrong with the 3.7-liter six, which hits 60 in 7.6 seconds. The V-8s, however, sounded best while turning in their times.
Downsizing the Volume
Our one real complaint, then: A truck this quick should make noises. You should hear it coming and going. The only sounds emanating from the EcoBoost F-150 are a faint turbo whistle and the occasional light sneeze on overrun. It’s quiet—too quiet.
As to the rest of the experience, the truck is as good as any other F-150. The smooth six-speed automatic transmission is the same as in trucks with the V-8s or naturally aspirated V-6, providing downshifts in adequate time when your right foot requests them, and manual control is available via a rocker switch on the shifter if desired. The steering offers acceptable feedback, showing none of the problems we experienced with the setup in a rear-wheel-drive 3.7-liter example. In short, the EcoBoost option requires no compromises—well, beyond the extra cost of the engine.
The cheapest EcoBoost model is a two-wheel-drive F-150 XL with a heavy-duty package and eight-foot bed ($28,185), but our test vehicle was not cheap. The FX4 SuperCrew starts at $40,365 and comes standard with four-wheel drive and the 5.0-liter V-8. Adding the EcoBoost V-6 is $750. This truck also had the FX Luxury package ($1950) with power adjustable pedals, a power sliding rear window, automatic climate control, a sound-system upgrade, backup sensors, a rearview camera, remote start, and heated power front leather buckets. When the grand total crosses the $40,000 barrier, an additional $750 is negligible. It’s a reasonable price to pay for 40 lb-ft of torque alone.
So a capable powerplant has found its best fit, giving the F-150 one more in a lineup of solid engine choices, but the EcoBoost once again fails to live up to the efficiency hype of its name. Aside from its fleetness, it doesn’t make a strong case for upgrading from the 5.0. Luckily, though, there’s no wrong decision.

2011 Ford F-150 EcoBoost Engine: More Power and Better ...
Shelby GT, the truck would still be around.Their top engine is going to end up being that 6.2L Boss V8 engine that is rumored to make between 400/400 and 425/425.They could just continue to use their 5.4L V8 Triton, but lower the prices on it a bit. The Ecoboost is rumored to make 340/340, but the V8 makes 320/390 on E85 and 310/365 on regular. So you lose torque, but gain HP with the V6 and I am sure better economy, but it isn't going to be as high as some people might think. With how heavy these trucks can get, those turbos are going to be needed all the time, loaded up or not to get torque out of the engine to move the truck. I really hope that Ford can do it, but I can also see an easy disaster.
