My 2010 Tacoma, while sitting at a stop light, suddenly surges as if somebody hit the gas or slammed me in the rear. It hasnt pushed me beyond my brakes but it is very disturbing. I reported this to the Toyota dealer and they said they couldnt reproduce it. It doesnt happen with any regularity, it just happens out of the blue. Additionally, when you go to very low speeds and make a sharp turn the rpms jump to about 3,000 and then it feels like the transmission kicks in. This was also reported to the dealer who said it was by design but if it is it is poor design.

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated the vehicle has had problems with the cruise control. The failure began after the contact had the transmission serviced and the transmission was not refilled properly. After the service, the contact stated that the cruise control started to accelerate pass the speed that it was set with being reset by the driver. The vehicle was taken to the dealer again and repairs were made to the electronic control unit, which has caused the rpms to idle either excessively low or excessively high. The contact stated the vehicle will also downshift from fifth gear to second gear when driving with the cruise control set to 55 mph and above. On June 11,2010 I was changing the anti freeze in my 2003 Toyota Tacoma. The vehicle was in park and running to warm engine to open thermostat to get more coolant from the lower block . Well I decide to boost the engine speed by manually moving the throttle . To my surprise my truck lurched back before coming to a stop I check the shifter it was still in park . But a further exam the vehicle stuck in reverse and will not go into any forward gear. I m' going to check to see if the linkage needs adjustment everybody I talk with said it was not suppose to move unless the brake was applied first.

The vehicle surges unexpectedly. One or more times a day, depending on travel needs, I experience surges both at complete stops and when accelerating. Depressing the accelerator pedal from a stop or roll includes a "delay" in response from the vehicle, then the unexpected surge is noticed. Generally, a small amount of pressure on the pedal does not yield a desired acceleration effect, instead a "wait and go" effect is experienced. Several times, this delay has caused near misses in terms of accidents. Expecting the vehicle to respond to accelerator pressure but not getting acceleration is considered hazardous. Surging forward violently when at a complete stop is another concern. With the brakes completely depressed, the vehicle will surge forward at most traffic lights or during stop and go traffic. This vehicle was brought to the dealer a week after purchase with my concerning of shifting and sometime erratic behavior. The dealership did little more than take a short test drive with me (no diagnostics, no formal or mechanical evaluation), and tell me nothing was wrong with the truck. The truck had less than 1000 miles on it, now with 2600 miles, the problems persist.

Truck was purchased new in may 2009 (tacoma sr5, 4x4, access cab, 4l, v6, automatic transmission, towing package). When coming to a stop, the engine will rev up to 5000 rpm. My foot is on the brake when this happens, and I am not slamming on the brake. When I shift into neutral, the revving stops. This has happened three times in two days, not every time I stop. The truck has 3900 miles on it. After the third time, I drove directly to the dealer. They did a "system health check" and the test came back ok. They could not duplicate the condition in the time they had the vehicle. I left the vehicle there for a technician to drive to see if he/she can replicate the condition.

I previously filed odi complaint 10282779 to report to two instances where my Tacoma accelerated on its own at a time when I had about 17,000 mi. On the vehicle. Thereafter I tried to troubleshoot the problem. The only thing that changed prior to the onset of the spontaneous acceleration was that I acquired a blackberry curve to replace my previous cell phone. My old cell phone was smaller, so while driving I usually kept it in the slot next to my gear shifter. My blackberry was much bigger and didn't fit in the slot. Therefore I put it in the cup holder underneath my dashboard. It was then that I started experiencing the acceleration problem. Subsequently, I started carrying my blackberry either in my backpack on the passenger seat or in the slot where I used to keep my smaller cell phone and I no longer charge the blackberry using the charger that plugs into my lighter socket in my dashboard. With one exception (which I shall describe) this has solved the problem over the 9,000 mi. Since it began. On 10/21/2009, I was driving my Tacoma at a time when I needed to charge my blackberry. I plugged my blackberry into the car charger and placed the blackberry in my backpack on the passenger seat. Within 10 miles my Tacoma started accelerating uncontrollably. I shifted the truck into a lower gear and unplugged my phone from the charger, but the vehicle kept accelerating. I shifted to neutral and turned off the engine when it started to redline, and steered the vehicle off the side of the road. After I stopped, I shifted into park and turned the ignition and the engine again started to redline. I let it rest a couple of minutes, and it started normally and I drove off. I no longer charge my blackberry with the lighter charger and have not had any subsequent problems. It is my belief that my blackberry's electromagnetic frequencies interfere with my Tacoma's electrical system when the phone is either too near the dash or plugged into the car charger.

The problem with the transmission is when I slow down to go around a curve or decelerate for any reason it does a hard down shift and then when I proceed to press the accelerator the truck acts like it is searching for what gear it should be in, at the same time the rpm is increasing (engine starts to race) and finally the transmission lurches forward and goes into gear. If you are in heavy traffic or crossing a busy highway this is very unnerving and in my opinion a safety issue and an accident just waiting to happen. I have taken my truck to the dealer twice and was told that there was nothing wrong with it. I was told that it was new technology and that I had to get used to it.

I purchased a new Toyota Tacoma sr5 pickup 8/27/09. Immediately I noticed a problem when I slowed down at speed bumps and to turn corners and then started to accelerate. The vehicle would hesitate then surge forward. I can stop the hesitation somewhat by very lightly pressing the accelerator after I slow down and then slowly accelerating. If I forget to very lightly accelerate, the vehicle will surge forward following the hesitation. One time this surge as I turned a corner almost took me into oncoming traffic. I attempted to resolve the issue with service representatives locally who told me the transmission was operating normally. I filed a complaint with Toyota, was given a case number and was told by their complaint center that it was Toyota's position that the transmission is operating normally. I feel that this tendency, which has been documented by numerous other owners at online sites such as edmunds. Com, is a safety hazard that should be remedied in a recall. This situation occurs every time the vehicle is driven and requires very careful concentration to avoid a sudden and potentially unsafe surge in speed. Nothing has been done to correct this issue and no response other than to deny my complaint has been taken.

My 2008 Toyota Tacoma accelerates on its own without warning when driving normal speeds. This happened twice in the last week. Both times the accelerator pedal was not blocked or impeded. When I subsequently shifted to neutral, the first time the engine returned to normal, the second time the engine raced to redline so I turned off the ignition. Thereafter, I started the engine and it raced to redline, so I shut it down. The second time I started it, the engine returned to normal. The first time the problem happened, I think that had been using cruise control earlier in the 45 minute drive. The second time, cruise control had never been turned on or engaged and the problem occurred in the first 2/10 of a mile into my drive. The pedal did not get stuck after I had pressed it all the way down. In both cases, I was driving a constant 35-45 mph when the truck took off on me. When I say it accelerated, I mean pedal to the metal acceleration - not gradual like when cruise control resumes. I took the car to the Toyota dealership for repair. They tested it and drove it 80 miles, but they couldn't find anything wrong or anything that could be fixed under warranty. I called Toyota's national office, and they said that if the dealer didn't find anything wrong, then there was nothing they could do. I would have thought they would have shown serious concern for this dangerous product defect.

Note: the date given is for the first of several incidents. Vehicle: 2009 Toyota Tacoma; 4 cyl. Auto trans. When ascending mountain passes, in drive, letting off on gas as summit is reached, vehicle accelerates over summit and continues acceleration. I've been able to drop the rpm by repeatedly hitting brake and then tapping gas. This lowers the rpm and puts transmission back into highest gear. This is a computer or electronic problem. It has happened the same way several times, over a few thousand miles and several months. I now make the ascent in third, shifting into drive at the summit, with no problems. I took the vehicle to the dealer, lithia Toyota in klamath falls or, and was told "the computer needs to adjust to your driving style", but it still hasn't happened. Toyota is stonewalling, and telling the dealers to do the same. There are dozens of similar complaints about Tacomas with automatic transmission.

The transmission in 2009 Tacoma 4wd v6 does not shift down smoothly as the truck slows down into a turn and begins to accelerate out of a turn or in a straight away. The issue is pronounced in speeds of 35 mph and less . There seem to be a delay in response when accelerating,. Until the transmission responds and the truck lurks forward . I checked with the Toyota dealer , and the dealer does not think there is a problem . I checked Toyota forums and found out numerous complaints about the same issue that I have . There is for sure a problem with the transmission or the software. My truck has only 2700 miles on it . All the complaints I read regarding this issue are low mileage trucks and it seems to be affecting the 2009 model.

I purchased a 2009 Tacoma double cab sr5 4x4 auto in June of 2009. It now has 9000kms. Ever since new I have noticed that the transmission shifts strangely and somewhat unpredictably. When I am driving at approx 18km/h and press the accelerator (to accelerate or continue same speed) the truck usually drops into 1st gear and stays there for a few seconds before going back into second gear. This causes a "lurching" as it should not be jumping to 1st. It is very noticeable and I have driven many, many automatics, including Toyotas, and they do not do this. I had a 2001 Tacoma before purchasing this new one and it did not do this. Also, when you shift the truck from neutral to drive, and immediately press the gas, it is almost like the truck hesitates, then lurches forward violently. Sometimes causing wheelspin. It seems like when shifting to drive there is no power for about 3 seconds then it suddenly hits. These problems are dangerous as they cause the vehicle to lurch forward when in traffic this is not safe.

2009 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 crew pickup truck with auto transmission and v6 engine accelerated unexpectedly to over 80 mph, then later on the same trip it happened again. I was on a long straight stretch of interstate the second time so I allowed the truck to accelerate to approximately 95 mph at which time I stopped the truck again. The first time it happened, I had disengaged the cruise control due to a slower car in front of me and when I engaged the cruise control resume feature the truck accelerated 15 mph past the preset speed at which time I turned off the cruise control and regained control of the truck. The second time that it happened the truck was again in cruise control mode and was going up a long hill. When the cruise control shifted the transmission down and accelerated to maintain set speed the truck continued to accelerate past 95 mph and was only stopped by turning off the cruise control again. I allowed the truck to get to that speed to see if it would discontinue accelerating but chickened out at 95 mph because it is after all a truck. I took the truck to the selling dealer, he tried to make it happen again with no success (told me he would have to replace the cruise control unit but could not do that unless he could duplicate the problem because it is a very expensive change out) and it has not happened but one more time. 4 things seem to be common: 1. The cruise is turned on. 2. The vehicle is accelerating when the problem starts. 3. The transmission has automatically downshifted. 4. The problem is halted by turning off the cruise control. I had the dealer document the problem since he would not fix it. I hope this info helps in your continuing investigation of the problems that Toyota seems to be having. I am not a disgruntled customer, I have purchased a 2010 corolla from the same dealer since the incidents.

I own a 2006 Toyota Tacoma prerunner double cab 4x2 v6. I bought the truck new from the dealership and have experienced four instances where after pressing the gas pedal hard, thus into overdrive, the truck either kept speeding up or did not rev back down. 1st instance - about 6 months after buying the vehicle, I was entering the freeway and needed to speed up to enter into traffic at speed. I pressed the gas pedal hard enough to boost speed. As I entered traffic, the truck just kept speeding up. After applying a light brake, I pumped the gas pedal several times and it the transmission finally engaged and geared back down. 2nd instance - while leaving the freeway @ 65 mph I slowed to 45 mph and switched lanes to the right. Then I applied gas to speed up to merge and the truck did not slow down. Again the link between the throttle and the transmission did not seem to reaction as in a normal situation. I had to merge back because the would not slow down fast enough. After 4-5 seconds the truck slowed down. 3rd instance - again entering the freeway. I applied pressure to the gas pedal to speed up enough to enter the traffic. This time the throttle opened full bore. I put the truck in neutral, lightly applied the brake, and pumped the gas pedal. After 5 seconds the truck finally revved back down. I reached a speed of over 90 mph in this instance. 4th instance - driving uphill the car automatically increased throttle with a small amount of additional pressure to the pedal, the truck surged forward, again full bore. I used the same technique and it eventually slowed. This problem is definitely not a floor mat problem. I now drive my truck very gingerly so as not to replicate the issue. I have taken the truck to two dealerships, both have not been helpful or have recognized the problem. Saying that "your truck is not on the recall list we see here, call this Toyota number. " I know that others with the same model have this problem.

Brought this to the attention of Toyota and their answer was,"vehicle is operating properly and is doing what it is designed to do". So they are telling me that they have designed a vehicle that is designed to shift down to second, not third at 70mph.

I purchased a new 2009 Toyota Tacoma in may of 2009. Shortly after purchasing the vehicle I noticed that the transmission 'slips' and does not engage at low speeds after slowing to around 10 mph and then accelerating without coming to a complete stop. This is very dangerous and I have had some close calls when turning left at traffic lights. This is a dangerous defect. I have carried the vehicle to the dealer twice and they say that Toyota has recognized the problem and is working on a computer 'patch' to solve the problem. I was given no time frame to fix the problem. I "googled" Toyota transmission problems and the problem appears to be so prevalent that there is a private web site devoted to this problem. I am wondering why the government has not issued a recall? this is a dangerous situation.

At higher mileages, (125,000-150,000) the automatic transmission may not shift correctly. This can be caused by the throttle position sensor being out of adjustment or a shift solenoid needing to be replaced. Typically the transmission does not need to be completely overhauled.

If you are a fan of the Gen 2 Toyota Tacoma, you have likely heard mixed reviews of the V6 6-speed transmission. Before I bought my 2013 Tacoma, I was a bit on the fence about the transmission but finally decided to go manual. After a good 7 months of driving it, I have a verdict.

A review of the Tacoma’s 6-speed manual transmission by Danny Cruz of Rallyways.com

First, let’s lay a couple of ground rules for this write up.

1. We are focusing only on the 6-Speed manual transmissions in the V6 truck. Everyone seems to love the 5-speed in the I4 model, so no point in debating that one.

2. This is a 2013 Toyota Tacoma V6 Double Cab 4×4 TRD Off Road. I understand that there is a big chance the gear boxes in the first trucks closer to 2005 might not be as robust. In other words, in all likelihood Toyota has been improving the box through the years.

3. I’m aware that over time, things like bad syncros can begin causing problems. For this write up I’m focusing more on the experience of driving it, more so than durability since the truck is fairly new.

4. I’m a bit biased towards manual transmissions. I can’t stand slushboxes, so in 99.9% of cases, I’ll choose a manual over an automatic. This means that chances are I want to like the transmission. So note that in your own assessment.

The argument against the 6-speed manual in the 2005-2013 generation 2 Toyota Tacomas is that it’s clunky, imprecise, a handful to operate, awkwardly geared and has fragile syncros.

Most of the above complaints are based on feel and personal perception. The exception would the syncros issue that some drivers have experienced needing actual transmission servicing. I’m not going to argue with those. And like I said earlier, most likely, Toyota has quietly upgraded some of the parts over the years.

Needless to say, I researched this truck for nearly 3 years before I bought it. Because I’m a hardcore stick-shift driver, at one point I had almost made up my mind on buying a manual Nissan Frontier over the Taco. Yes, those have a pretty slick, car-like 6-speed manual transmission.

In the end, I bought the stick-shift Tacoma and have been driving it for the last 7 months and here’s what I have to say.

The 6-speed in the Taco is not a car transmission. It’s definitely a truck. My other cars are Miatas, and those are known for their super-precise transmissions, ala Honda S2000.

The throws are much longer, pretty much like you’re rowing a canoe. Plus, you have to be more deliberate about your shifts. It doesn’t like to be powered-through the gears. It doesn’t like it when you try and shift unusually fast. Again, it’s not a sports car.

First gear is pretty low and short, requiring you to shift out of it almost immediately after you set off. At the opposite end of the spectrum, top gear could be a little higher allowing for better gas mileage on the freeway.

Having said all that, I don’t consider the shifts to be clunky and imprecise. While each throw is long, the actual engagement is positive and offers the right amount of feedback. It doesn’t feel like a rifle, but it’s positive regardless.

There is not a lot of play in neutral either. The entire assembly feels robust, like quality machinery. Once you get used to the feel of the shifter, it becomes second nature and rowing through gears becomes intuitive and fun.

The clutch feel is great – Mainly because it’s heavy enough to feel like a truck clutch, but does not require the legs of a bodybuilder to operate on long trips. In fact, my wife has been driving the truck even more than I have. Even though she’s petite, she has zero problems with the clutch.

One thing I really like about the relationship between the clutch, transmission and engine torque is that it’s very user-friendly. In many manual cars, the “sweet spot” of clutch disengagement when letting out the pedal is too narrow. This results in the operation having to be extra-precise in order to avoid jerky shifts or gear-mesh noise from not enough torque due to low-revs. In the 6-speed manual Tacoma, this sweet spot is considerably larger than in many other cars or trucks I’ve driven. Which means that clean, un-jerky manual driving is quite easy to perform.

There are a few things I’ve noticed that I’m not so thrilled about. For one, there’s the ECU’s rev-hang feature. I’m actually not sure what the heck this is for, but what it does is it actually holds the revs up for a fraction of a second longer after you let go of the gas in first gear. It might also happen in other gears, but I only notice it in first. The reason I notice it is because it’s usually in first where you’re crawling through parking lots.

This is most annoying when you immediately depress the clutch after pulling off in first to disengage the transmission to coast thru a corner in a parking lot for example. The rev-hang causes a bit of a clunking noise from the clutch when you depress it too fast. This is caused, I believe, from the engine holding the revs longer and the torque being released as the clutch is depressed.

This is something I’ve learned to work around and it has become as second nature as rev-matching for an experienced manual transmission driver like myself. For one, I depress the clutch much more slowly in such situation. I will also compensate by not pressing the clutch immediately after releasing the gas pedal. What I do is a bit more simultaneous. Similar to the way you simultaneously depress the gas and let go of the clutch when setting off, but the inverse of that. In other words, I’m still ever so slightly holding the gas as I start depressing the clutch pedal before coasting. Sounds complicated, but it’s really easy.

The other thing I don’t like is directly related to the fact that it’s a truck. The rev-range is much shorter at 5500 revs to the limiter than it is in a sports car. For that reason, rev-matching is a bit more useless, as you are almost usually close to the correct RPM’s when making downshifts. And, the flywheel being of course heavier, because it’s a truck, a blip of the throttle to rev-match feels a bit delayed causing your to over-rev.

The verdict? Danny is happy he purchased the truck, and happy he choose the 6-speed.

I admit, I was a little worried about buying the 6-speed manual V6 Toyota Tacoma after reading about all the conflicting stories on the Tacoma forums. So much so, that I even considered a Frontier at the time. However, I’m very glad I went with the Taco.

The 6-speed manual is in fact a good transmission, at least from the point of view of a hardcore stick-shift-only driver like myself. While the drive and feel of the gearbox is not at all like a sports car, as a truck transmission, it feels great. The shifting is positive and the harmony created between the engine, transmission and clutch operation is perfectly fine by me. Would I change anything? If I were the engineer, I would eliminate the rev-hang feature and extend the ratio of 6-gear for better freeway MPG. Apart from that I’m very happy with the transmission and even happier that I stayed away from the slushbox.

I have been reading different posts and was suprised to hear other people having the same problem as me. I have a 06 double cab tacoma 4x4. Ever since I got it a weird humming noise would appear around 30 mph and go away at 40 mph. It wouldnt do this all the time, it might happen one day and wouldnt show up again for a couple days later. I finally took it into the dealer with around 2500 miles on it. I took it for a drive with the mechanic and he heard it, so we drove around trying to figure out what it could be. He asked if it did it in four wheel drive, I said I have never tried it. So we waited for the humming noise to show up, and once it did I popped it in to 4WD, and the noise instantly went away. We tried it a couple times and every time it went away. So now I have to take it in later this week and they are going to troubleshoot more and hopefully fix the problem. Well I just wanted to hear from you guys if you had the same problem and what the outcome of your experiance was?

I have not personally yet had an issue with this, but I image it is a problem for more than one person. . . . While driving the vehicle (2007 Toyota Tacoma), the shift stick does not require you to press the brake to put the vehicle in reverse, so, if by mistake the shift knob was bumped, knocked, or whatever, it could send the car in reverse (on the freeway?!?!) without the driver's consent. Not good. . .
