Health care costs key issue in UAW talks - The Detroit News

Automaker spending on health care for hourly workers and their families likely will top $2 billion this year. In just the past four years, it's grown 45 percent for Ford Motor Co. and 77 percent for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US. The United Auto Workers has been resistant to giving up the gold-plated health care coverage it has for more than 135,000 hourly... UAW hourly workers enjoy some of the best health care benefits in the country: There are virtually no premiums or deductibles and minimal co-pays for doctor visits and prescriptions. Ford says its health care cost for hourly employees is about $800 million this year — up from $550 million in 2011. FCA says it will pay $615 million this year, compared to $347 million it spent in 2011. GM reportedly spent $665 million on health... Health care is a "go to war issue" for the UAW as it seeks to maintain or expand benefits without adding more cost-sharing, said Kristin Dziczek, director of the Industry & Labor Group with the Center for Automotive Research. "They need to cut the cost of their single most expensive benefit, and they think that people who have skin in the game make different decisions about their health care," she said. GM opens $14M active-safety test area in Milford - The Detroit News

Milford Township — General Motors Co. has a new $14 million test area for active-safety systems at its Milford Proving Ground that will help the carmaker quicken development of advanced safety features, including self-driving vehicle technology. GM’s Mark Reuss, head of global product development, said the facility will help GM achieve its goal for being tops in automotive safety leadership. “We want our brands to be the first brands customers think of when they think about safety and buying a new vehicle,” Reuss said. More than a year ago, rocked by a deadly ignition switch recall crisis, GM transformed its safety culture, recall practices and safety and engineering organizations. The systems — with some additional features such as lane-departure warning — are available for about $400, said John Capp, GM’s director of global safety strategy and vehicle programs. The pedestrian braking system will be available on the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu and Cadillac CT6. It will fully stop a vehicle going up to 20 miles per hour from hitting a pedestrian and at higher speeds will help mitigate the severity of a crash. The suites of active safety technologies will be deployed across GM’s Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles, from the Chevrolet Spark minicar to the luxury CT6 sedan. Morouns tidy up before Detroit land vote - The Detroit News

All are examples of how members of the billionaire Moroun family, owners of the Ambassador Bridge, are trying to clean up their properties — and image. It's in advance of a potential City Council vote Tuesday on a land deal they hope will lead to a second bridge across the Detroit River. The family wants to build the second span next to the existing one, and sink plans for a publicly owned bridge favored by the state and Canada. The Morouns already control 550 acres spread throughout Detroit, but they need three more: an unused patch of city-owned waterfront property near the current bridge. On Tuesday, the City Council may vote on whether to give the Morouns the riverfront property they want. The Morouns have agreed to give the city 4. 8 acres to expand Riverside Park, a rather plain waterfront public space in southwest Detroit. As part of the deal, the Morouns would pay up to $5 million to build a baseball diamond, soccer field, picnic and fishing areas and a riverside promenade. The Morouns want the land so badly that a member of the normally reclusive family and some company officials have been making public appearances to press their case. Source: www.detroitnews.com
