  • Ranger or Hilux? The bakkie battle

    05/11/15, via Independent Online

The top-of-the-range 3.2 litre packs a 147kW punch compared with just 120kW in Toyota's top 3.0 litre D4D turbodiesel unit. The Wildtrak with this engine would make mincemeat of the Legend 45 with the top turbodiesel (in a sprint). But, with less power

Based on speculation, Toyota will replace its existing 3.0-litre D4D diesel engine for a more efficient 2.8-litre four-cylinder engine. The down-sized engine, which uses back to the 2.8-litre naturally-aspirated diesel found in older Hilux, will be

  • Review: Toyota Hilux 3.0 D

    02/22/12, via iAfrica.com

The Hilux is just that popular. It is far-and-away Toyota's best-selling vehicle in South Africa, with somewhere in the region of 900 000 units snapped up in the country over the years. More recent figures tell a similar tale: 2774 new units were sold

Photos leak of 2016 Toyota HiLux - Waikato Times

The images come as more technical details of the new HiLux emerge, including a raft of new downsized diesel engines and the omission of Toyota's longstanding 4. 0-litre V6 petrol powertrain. Speculation suggests that Toyota will ditch its existing 3. 0-litre D4D diesel engine for a more efficient 2. 8-litre four-cylinder unit. The down-sized engine, which harks back to the 2. 8-litre naturally-aspirated diesel found in older HiLuxes, will be mated to the choice of a new six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. The manual version is said to produce 132kW and 420Nm, while the automatic will produce 450Nm of torque. In addition, it is rumoured that Toyota will offer an entry level turbo diesel in the form of a 2. 4-litre four-cylinder unit that produces 112kW and 343Nm in five-speed manual guise, or 125kW and 400Nm with the optional six-speed automatic. The thirsty 4. 0-litre V6 of the current HiLux will likely be dropped, with the Japanese car maker opting for a 2. 7-litre petrol four-cylinder available with manual or automatic transmissions. Ranger or Hilux? The bakkie battle - Independent Online

Johannesburg - This is a note for women: if your man is thinking of buying a double-cab bakkie, get him to take you shopping in it at the Rosebank Mall and use the underground parking. In Ford’s massive Ranger Wildtrak 4x4, I was cursing my luck in having a coffee meeting at the mall. In 4x4 high range and with its 460Nm of torque, the Wildtrak was, despite the bouncing and heart-stopping moments, a pleasant place to be. And, as transport, at that moment it made perfect sense. RANGER vs HILUX: IT’S WAR. The same applies exactly to Toyota’s legendary Hilux, which is facing its strongest challenge yet from the Ranger. In April, the Ford bakkie outsold the Toyota for the second time. Both brands have their ardent fans who will buy nothing else – but both are also looking for sales among those who may not be bakkie-mad but like the flexibility a pick-up offers, to say nothing of the “I am the Camel Man” image. Toyota has refreshed its top-of-the-range Hilux by bringing out the Legend 45 edition, which celebrates 45 years of the model in our market. Source: www.iol.co.za

Toyota reveals HiLux-based Fortuner SUV - Drive

Toyota says the model will fill a hole in its line-up for a diesel wagon sitting between the RAV4 and LandCruiser Prado machines, while giving an alternative to the larger and more road-biased petrol-only Kluger SUV. Like its HiLux cousin, the Fortuner has a rugged body-on-frame design powered by a 2. 8-litre turbo-diesel engine linked to a part-time four-wheel-drive system. The main mechanical difference between the two is that the wagon uses a five-link coil spring suspension setup in place of the pick-up's leaf spring arrangement. Toyota says the Fortuner has a 3000-kilogram towing capacity in six-speed manual form, with a 300 kilogram town-ball rating that should cope with heavy-duty towing. Six-speed automatic models are set to offer a 2. 8 tonne towing peak. Australian engineers had a strong role developing the machine, which has 225 millimetres of ground clearance – 25 millimetres more than the Kluger – along with steep approach and departure angles and a mechanical rear differential lock that should... Toyota will offer the machine in three model grades dubbed GX, GXL and Crusade. Mid-range models will add parking sensors, smart keys and hill descent assistance, along with all-terrain tyres shared with the entry-level model. Source: www.drive.com.au
