The next Rolls-Royce car will be called 'Dawn' - The Verge

Silver Seraph. Most automakers don't get a news cycle for the announcement of the name of a new model, but then again, a new Rolls-Royce is kind of a big deal: in the past decade-plus, there have been only three badges on Rollers — Phantom, Ghost, and Wraith. "Dawn" evokes the Silver Dawn name, used in the 1950s on a dramatic drophead (pictured above). ‘Dawn' perfectly expresses the character of the new Rolls-Royce. Like Eleanor Thornton, thought by many to be the inspiration behind the Spirit of Ecstasy, the Rolls-Royce Dawn will also prove itself to be the muse that leads its owner to believe that at the start of the day, anything is possible. In 1998 verkreeg BMW de rechten over de naam en het merk Rolls-Royce, voor 40 miljoen pond, maar daar bleef de invloed van de Beierse fabrikant niet bij. De Silver Seraph werd in dat jaar geïntroduceerd en tegelijkertijd werd de 6,75-liter V8 met pensioen gestuurd. De Silver Seraph kreeg namelijk een 5,4-liter V12 in het vooronder die, niet geheel toevallig, afkomstig was van BMW. Daarnaast was dit model de eerste volledig nieuw ontwikkelde auto sinds de Silver Shadow , die reeds in 1965 werd geïntroduceerd. Die V12 is nu niet meer weg te denken uit de enorme slagschepen die in Goodwood gebouwd worden, maar het was voor het eerst sinds de Phantom III uit 1939 dat een Rolls met een 12-cilinder werd uitgerust. Overigens vind je dat blok nog steeds in de Mulsanne uit 2010. Genoeg daarover, terug naar de Silver Seraph. In totaal zijn er 1. 570 exemplaren van de ‘normale’ Silver Seraph gebouwd en 127 van de verlengde versie, beter bekend als Park Ward. Flink gasgeven resulteerde in een acceleratie naar 100 km/u in ongeveer 7 seconden en bij 225 km/u was de juice op.
