DETROIT (AP) - Fiat Chrysler must offer to buy back from customers hundreds of thousands of Ram pickup trucks and other vehicles -- the biggest such action in U. S. history -- as part of a costly deal with safety regulators to settle legal... In addition, owners of more than a million older Jeeps with vulnerable rear-mounted gas tanks will be able to trade them in or be paid by Chrysler to have the vehicles repaired. The Ram pickups, which are the company's top-selling vehicle, have defective steering parts that can cause drivers to lose control. Some previous repairs have been unsuccessful, so Fiat Chrysler agreed to the buy-back, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The older Jeeps have fuel tanks located behind the rear axle, with little to shield them in a rear crash. At least 75 people have died in crash-related fires, although Fiat Chrysler maintains they are as safe as comparable vehicles from the same era. Both the Jeep and Ram measures are part of a larger settlement between the government and the automaker over allegations of misconduct in 23 recalls covering more than 11 million vehicles. For 2016, the Ram 3500 is rated to tow a monstrous 31,210 pounds, 1210 pounds more than the 2015 Ram 3500 and a mere 10 pounds more than Ford’s F-450 pickup, the tow rating of which stands at “just” 31,200 pounds. The Ram’s increase was made possible in part by upping the number of bolts on the rear-axle ring-gear hardware (from 12 to 16, if you must know) on versions equipped with the 11. 8-inch rear axle, as well as by using a stronger differential-case... Also helping matters is a 35 lb-ft increase in torque for the 6. 7-liter Cummins inline-six diesel engine, bringing the total to a nice, even 900 lb-ft (also bragging-rights material). The latter boost was made possible by recalibrated fuel-delivery and turbo-boost settings, Ram says. Ram is also boasting the highest payload for a pickup: 7390 pounds for the 2016 Ram 3500 equipped with the 6. 4-liter Hemi V-8. S. sales of 178,027 units, a 6 percent increase compared with sales in July 2014 (167,667 units), and the group’s best July sales since 2005. *** The Street was looking for a gain of 4. 8 percent. The Chrysler, Jeep®, and Ram Truck brands each posted year-over-year sales gains in July compared with the same month a year ago. “Last week FCA announced a 69 percent increase in second quarter profits and now we post our best July U. S. sales since 2005,” said Reid Bigland, Head of U. S. Sales. “With Jeep sales up 23 percent, we were also able to achieve our 64th-consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases. Eight FCA US vehicles set records in the month of July, including the Chrysler 200, which posted the largest percentage year-over-year increase of any FCA US vehicle in the month. In addition, the Dodge Challenger, Dodge Journey, Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Patriot, Jeep Compass, and Ram ProMaster each recorded their best July sales ever.
