2012 Porsche Panamera S Hybrid DIGITAL EDITOR ANDREW STOY: I've got to hand it to Porsche : The Panamera doesn't do a lot for me on the outside, but the inside is one of my favorite places to spend driving time. Thanks to the individual bucket rear seats, the belt buckles were very easy to reach with child booster seats in place. I said months ago how much I liked Porsche's hybrid system in the Cayenne , and it's even better bolted to the Panamera S. Yes, the brake regen is aggressive, but once you grow accustomed to the bite, everything else about the system simply works... what struck me is how often one coasts while driving in normal conditions, evidenced by seeing the tach needle periodically drop to zero while cruising along at 75 mph. During a tangential discussion, Davey G. Johnson and I were chatting about the high-end car depreciation curve, and the potential for picking up a Panamera for half-price in, say, five years. And what are the futures of extraordinarily complex machines like this absent the cult following of the 911. Will the Panamera become the next 928, a decade hence rousing the interest of entry-level exotic car fans with low purchase prices only to... But for now, if your subdivision, station in life or parking space at work dictates you drive something with a hybrid badge, I'm happy to report it doesn't have to cost you true driving fun—but it will cost you $110K. Powertrain: 333-hp supercharged V6, 47-hp electric motor, eight-speed automatic, rear-wheel drive. What's New: The Panamera S Hybrid borrows and tweaks the supercharged 3. 0-liter direct-injection V6, 34-kilowatt electric motor and eight-speed transmission from Porsche's Cayenne S Hybrid. In addition to the new hardware, the car gets an "E-Power" switch that allows drivers to choose electric-only driving for the city that works up to 53 mph. When everything works in concert, Porsche's hybrid sedan will scoot to 60 mph in under 6. 0 seconds, making it the quickest hybrid currently on the market. It's attached to the front of the torque converter and can drive the transmission on its own, giving the Panamera S Hybrid a 47-hp electric motor with eight speeds. However, a mechanical clutch connects the engine, electric motor and transmission for a maximum output of 380 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque. In sailing mode, when the car is off throttle or going down an incline, the engine can turn off and the electric motor can either provide occasional power or act as a generator. The updated 2016 Porsche 911 will feature a range of turbocharged powerplants that will be more potent, more drivable in performance, and yet also more fuel-efficient than the naturally aspirated engines they replace. In the beginning, we expect two different iterations: a 370-hp, twin-turbo 2. 7-liter flat-six for the Carrera and a 420-hp, twin-turbo 3. 0-liter variant for the Carrera S. While these output numbers are hardly headline material, both twin-turbo... While the free breathing, naturally aspirated 4. 0-liter motor fitted to the current Porsche 911 GT3 RS has some potential for evolution, it will eventually be superseded by an even brawnier, lightweight Mk II engine, but without forced induction. The lightweight, no-frills Porsche 911R scheduled to appear in limited quantity next year will have a naturally aspirated 450-hp engine, which is further proof that the classic Porsche flat-six has a future in Stuttgart.
