Beijing: China’s stock market crash this week brought a jolting end to an uncomfortable summer for most of the world’s carmakers, who in past years had enjoyed a smooth ride in the industry’s most profitable market. A crackdown on ostentatious consumption had threatened to depress sales for the likes of Bentley and Rolls-Royce, ever since Chinese president Xi Jinping launched his anticorruption campaign in 2013. This year, the impact has started to show. Even so, the sudden deceleration in Chinese car sales came as a surprise to some — not least when sales went into reverse in recent months. In July, car sales fell for a second consecutive month, by 6. 6 per cent, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. Some analysts believe that the scale of the decline is such that multinational manufacturers such as Volkswagen and BMW — respectively the parent companies of Bentley and Rolls-Royce — will be forced to warn on profits in the coming weeks. What do a 44-year-old racing car, an electric guitar and this revised Porsche Cayenne have in common. All I was reliably able to divine was that, in Porsche’s view at least, its first Le Mans winner, the aforementioned stringed instrument and its latest 4x4 are all very rock ‘n’ roll. Like every other Cayenne, it features a broadly successful new front and rear bumper treatment, modified suspension settings and a new, more sporting steering wheel with standard gearshift paddles. But while the two diesel versions and flagship Turbo have been merely massaged to produce a little more power and use a little less fuel, the S has an entirely new engine never seen in any Cayenne to date. Those hoping for an even more stirring version of the fabulous V8 that has served the Cayenne S these past 12 years should look away now. Thanks to twin turbochargers it has 20bhp more than the old V8, but you can’t turn Phil Collins into the Rolling Stones, however high you turn up the volume. Even Ferrar i is trading large, naturally aspirated engines for small turbo units so we can’t be surprised to see Porsche taking this approach - the gains in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are just too great. In reality this brand-new turbo engine will carry you a mere two miles further on each gallon of unleaded with a commensurately modest fall in CO2. Would you trade your V8 for that.
