Later, the car spawned the Porsche 944, making do with a more acceptable single-cam, 2. 5-liter four-pot. That engine then branched-out into a bigger 2. 7-liter SOHC unit, two different turbocharged 2. 5-liters, a normally-aspirated 2. 5-liter DOHC engine, and a bigger 3. 0-liter DOHC version. At its best, equipped with the latest 2. 5-liter turbo mill, the Porsche 944 Turbo made roughly 250 HP. According to the current owner of this Porsche, his car passes that mark by a good 100 horses. This LS-swapped Porsche 944 is for sale on Craigslist near Reading, Pennsylvania. Powering the car, according to the seller, is a 4. 8-liter LR4 from a 2003 Silverado, with an LSA cam , LS6 valve springs, and an LS1 intake , tuned to produce a mighty 300 HP at the wheels. Bereits 1976 präsentierte Porsche mit dem Modell 924 einen Nachfolger für den VW-Porsche 914. Mit einem Vierzylinder-Frontmotor und Transaxle-Bauweise offerierte der moderne Sportwagen zeitgemässe Fahrdynamik, nur die 125 PS des VW-/Audi-Motors... Dem wurde 1978 mit dem 924 Turbo abgeholfen, nun standen rund 170 PS an, doch noch immer galt der 924er nicht als richtiger Porsche. Mit Renneinsätzen sollte dem Image-Problem abgeholfen werden, daraus entstand schliesslich der Porsche 944 mit vom 928er abgeleiteten Vierzylindermotor und 163 PS, dem 1985 auf dem Genfer Salon dann der 944 Turbo nachgereicht wurde. Mit elektronischer Steuerung und Klopfsensor wurde im laufenden Betrieb der Zündwinkel optimiert, um eine höhere Verdichtung zu ermöglichen. Die 944er-Karosserie wurde vorne und hinten überarbeitet, ein geglätteter Bug, eine Heckschürze und optimierte Spoiler senkten den cw-Wert von 0. 35 auf 0. 33. Auch Bremsen und Fahrwerk des 944er wurden aufwändig überarbeitet. Im Innern übernahm der 1280 kg schwere Turbo die Verbesserungen, von denen bereits das 1985er-Modell des «normalen» 944er profitierte. Die Zeitschrift «Auto Motor und Sport» liess den Platzhirsch 911 Carrera im Frühjahr 1985 gegen seinen modernen Widersacher 944 Turbo antreten, um herauszufinden, ob der Vierzylinder eine echte Alternative ist. Bei den Fahrleistungen lagen beide Porsches auf gleichem Niveau. 5,9 Sekunden dauerte der Sprint auf 100 km/h im 944 Turbo, 5,9 Sekunden benötigte der 911 Carrera. Source: www.20min.ch
