One of the most gratifying spin-offs of one of the most gratifying cars extant is back: The wraps have been taken off of the second-generation Porsche Boxster Spyder. The formula for this new model hews closely to the original Boxster Spyder , which launched for 2011. That includes a weight reduction (it’s 66 pounds lighter than the GTS), a stripped-out interior, aero-optimizing body add-ons, unique fascias, a... Porsche says the new Spyder is both the most powerful and the fastest Boxster it has ever created. With 375 horsepower—45 more than the Boxster GTS and 10 fewer than the Cayman GT4 —from a naturally aspirated, 3. 8-liter flat-six borrowed from the 911 Carrera S and a top speed of 180 mph, the numbers back up the boast. The larger, more-powerful engine also is shared with the GT4, and it trumps the 3. 4-liter unit from the S and GTS as the displacement champ in Boxster-dom. The last-gen edition trumped the S in power, but it shared that car’s 3. 4-liter six-cylinder and the increase in muscle was just 10 horsepower—Porsche clearly isn’t messing around this time. Porsche claims a zero-to-60-mph time of 4. 3 seconds, but that’s the same time we achieved with the original 320-hp Spyder. The 2016 Boxster Spyder is the fastest, most powerful, most formidable version of Porsche's mid-engined convertible yet. Power is provided by the 3. 8-liter flat-six from the 911 Carrera S-that's right, Porsche's so serious about the Spyder that it finally dropped a 911 engine into a Boxster-rated at 375 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. As a result, the 2016 Spyder gets a massive 55-horsepower gain over the first Boxster Spyder, and 45 over the top-spec Boxster GTS. Porsche claims a 0-60 mph time of 4. 3 seconds and a top speed of 180 mph. The 2016 Boxster Spyder's design cues mesh quite well: the front and rear fascia, taken from the Cayman GT4, add 10mm of length while contributing to the 72 pounds the Spyder loses over the GTS. The Boxster is already a good-looking car. For the 2016 Boxster Spyder, the top is more refined. Whereas the standard Boxster has a full-length retractable roof, the Boxster Spyder will arrive with a manually operated, bikini-style roof that helps cut a few pounds from the curb weight. With this type of top in place, the Boxster Spyder will also feature aero humps just behind the seats. In the last-generation Boxster Spyder, Porsche reduced the fuel tank capacity, added in aluminum doors, offered a lithium-ion battery, and pulled some unnecessary equipment from the interior to drop the curb weight by 176 pounds. There is no mention of when the Boxster Spyder will debut this year, nor is there any mention of which engine it will use.
