The Nissan Titan has never been the sales leader in the full-size truck segment, and to improve those standings, the Titan is going to be dramatically different for the 2016 model year. In the meantime, the current generation of the Titan will be available for one more year, as an extended (King) cab or Crew Cab, short or long bed and two- or four-wheel drive, with one engine, one transmission and one axle ratio. 2016 Nissan Titan
Enlarge PhotoShopping for a new Nissan Titan?
GET A FREE PRICE QUOTEThe Nissan Titan went on sale as the company's first full-size truck in the 2004 model year. But it hasn't been the sales titan Nissan had hoped for. Fervent buyer loyalty to the Ram 1500, Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra is very strong, as Toyota also has discovered with its full-size Tundra pickup.
The Nissan Titan is built in Nissan's plant in Canton, Mississippi and shares running gear with the company's full-size Armada SUV as well as a few pieces with the mid-size Frontier pickup. A new Titan is available for the 2016 model year with long overdue improvements.
See our 2016 Nissan Titan review for more details, specifications, and pricing.
Now in its 12th model year on sale, the Titan remains a good-looking truck. With styling basically unchanged since it was launched, the Titan takes a nod from Nissan's SUVs with its masculine blend of lines and curves, its flared fenders and its big, bright chrome grille. The cabin is similarly stuck in time but hasn't aged as well as the sheetmetal.
While most rival large pickups—especially those from the U.S. automakers—have targeted work use and company fleets, Nissan has always focused on personal and recreational use for the Titan. The Titan has never come in a stripped-down base model, nor in a heavy-duty edition; focused models aim at off-roading and towing, but the truck is only offered with a large 5.6-liter V-8 engine.
That V-8 originally made 305 horsepower and 379 pound-feet of torque—upgraded to 317 hp and 385 lb-ft in 2007—which especially at the time of the Titan's 2004 introduction made it one of the fastest, most powerful standard-equipment trucks. However fuel economy is unimpressive—count on low teens in the city, and don't count on any optional smaller engine.
With its responsive five-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or four-wheel drive, the powertrain is positively quick, and handling is good. Road noise is more accentuated than with other full-size trucks, though, and the rumbly, ever-present nature of the engine won't suit everyone.
The Titan's biggest change came in 2007, when Nissan introduced long-wheelbase models for the first time. That allowed many more build variations, and at the same time, payload capacity was increased. Titan models can now carry up to 9,500 pounds. Most Titans receive a factory spray-in bedliner, and Nissan has offered some unique storage options like the cleated tie-downs that slide up and down tracks to secure a small, heavy object like an engine block. Other truck manufacturers have adopted forms of those features since.
The Titan offers configuration choices similar to those of the other big trucks, although not quite as many. Beds come in 6.5- or 8.0-foot lengths. The King Cab is what most refer to as an extended cab, while the Crew Cab is a true four-door with plenty of room for adults in the rear. It's comfortable inside, with convenience features being added over the years and including items like a DVD entertainment system, satellite radio, and Bluetooth phone connectivity.
Safety hasn't been the Titan's forte. In recent years it's achieved less-than-optimal results from both major crash-test organizations, though electronic stability control has been standard for many years and was optional when the Titan was first introduced.
At one point before Chrysler's bankruptcy, Nissan planned to replace the Titan with a version of Chrysler's Ram 1500. That plan was scuttled after Fiat assumed control of the Detroit automaker, however. Because of the abrupt change in plans, Nissan basically had to start at square one for its new full-size truck, leading to the big delay in replacing the aging model.
The Titan has changed very little over the past several years, although in the 2013 Titan Nissan freshened the look of the off-road-themed PRO-4X. At the same time it gave all Titans a new tailgate design, with a few other minor appearance changes, and made the navigation system (with a USB port and satellite radio) more widely available.
The next Titan
The first of the new Titan models was shown at the 2015 Detroit auto show in January. The 2016 Nissan Titan has been extensively reengineered and completely redesigned, with the star of the lineup being a new XD model that is available with a 5.0-liter Cummins diesel V-8 making 310 hp and 555 lb-ft of torque. A gas V-8 will once again be available. With the right equipment, the XD can tow up to 12,000 pounds, putting it somewhere between the capability of a half-ton and a three-quarter-ton truck. New options include in-bed lighting, a factory gooseneck setup, lockable bedside storage, and of course the latest infotainment features in the completely redesigned and modern interior. Nissan will show other models besides the XD at a later date.

Review Prices Specs Performance Interior Safety Reliability PicturesThe 2015 Nissan Titan ranks 6 out of 6 Full Size Pickup Trucks. This ranking is based on our analysis of published reviews and test drives of the Nissan Titan, as well as reliability and safety data.
Test drivers agree that the 2015 Nissan Titan is outdated and outclassed by its rivals in terms of cabin quality, comfort and performance.
The 2015 Titan comes standard with a V8 engine, and test drivers say that the Titan has ample power and accelerates briskly. However, unlike rivals, there are no other engine choices. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard, and most rivals' transmissions have at least six gears, which critics point out gives them an edge over the Titan in terms of fuel economy and performance. Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 13/18 mpg city/highway, which is poor for the class. A number of reviewers agree that the 2015 Titan is fairly nimble for a pickup truck and has responsive steering. Still, many comment that rivals ride more comfortably.
The 2015 Nissan Titan's cabin has an outdated design and is constructed with low-rent materials, according to critics. They note that Titans with the optional captain's chairs offer greater front-seat comfort than the standard bench seat. King cab models have limited rear-seat legroom, reviewers say, and while Crew cab models are more spacious, some critics still find the rear seat uncomfortable. There are few notable standard features, but optional features include a rearview camera, smartphone integration, a 10-speaker Rockford Fosgate audio system, Bluetooth, a USB port and navigation with a 5.8-inch touch screen. Auto journalists say that the navigation system works OK, but they think that the screen is small compared to the screens in most rivals.
"Although the 2015 Nissan Titan will likely meet your basic requirements for a full-size truck, it lags behind newer rivals in key areas, including fuel economy, interior quality and equipment availability." -- Edmunds "First introduced way back in 2004, the Nissan Titan full-size pickup is definitely beginning to show its age but still offers plenty of power and capability. One weakness is a lack of options compared to the domestic competition- the Titan has a single powertrain and no heavy-duty model." -- Left Lane News "Designed to do battle with the Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra and Ford F-150, as well as the RAM 1500 and Toyota Tundra, the Titan has fallen behind these brands in its engine options, technology and styling. But the Titan can still deliver in the core of what full-size truck buyers need and want: horsepower, towing and versatility." -- AutoTrader Nissan Titan Pictures & VideosSee More Nissan Titan Photos »
Other Trucks to ConsiderUnlike the Titan, the Ram 1500 is available with a range of available engines, including a diesel engine that helps it return excellent fuel economy for the class. Test drivers like the Ram 1500's luxurious interior and serene ride, especially with its available adjustable air suspension.
The redesigned Ford F-150 earns reviewer praise for its ample passenger space and poised handling. It is available with one of two turbocharged V6 engines, and test drivers agree that both deliver ample power, and with either engine, the F-150 gets better fuel economy than the Titan.

Details: 2015 Nissan TitanThe 2015 Nissan Titan is offered in King (extended) and Crew cab configurations, which both seat up to six people. Rear-wheel drive is standard and four-wheel drive is optional. Power comes from a 5.6-liter V8 engine which is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. The Titan comes in four trims: S, SV, SL (Crew cab only) and off-road-oriented Pro-4X. The Titan was introduced for the 2004 model year and has been largely unchanged since. As a result, this overview uses applicable research and reviews from 2015 and prior model years.

Nissan Titan Review - Research New & Used Nissan Titan ...
The Nissan Titan, introduced for 2004, was the first Japanese pickup to truly possess the attributes that buyers typically expect from a full-size truck. Manufactured at Nissan's Canton, Mississippi, plant, it boasts dimensions and capabilities that are very similar to those of domestic full-size pickups. Though it hasn't sold as well as its rivals and is now growing quite long in the tooth, a new or used Nissan Titan can still meet the basic needs of many truck shoppers.
Current Nissan TitanThe Nissan Titan is a full-size pickup truck. In terms of size, it's very similar to the trucks offered by domestic automakers, which means it provides competitive amounts of cargo and interior room. There's a fully boxed frame underneath for maximum rigidity and strength, as well as a traditional solid rear axle with leaf-spring support.
Nissan currently offers the Titan in extended-cab (King Cab) and crew-cab styles, with two bed lengths each. Buyers may also choose between standard- and long-wheelbase versions, with the latter adding 20 inches in length. The King Cab is offered with either a 6.5- or 8-foot bed, while those on the crew cab are each 1 foot shorter. The King Cab's rear-hinged doors open extra wide to aid cargo loading or a passenger's entry to the rear seats. The crew cab has four traditional doors and a larger rear seating area with more available rear legroom than the extended cab.
Each Nissan Titan body style is available in four trim levels. Similar to other Nissan products, there's the entry-level S, the midgrade SV, off-road-focused PRO-4X and the luxury-oriented SL. The S has a front bench seat, while captain's chairs with a flow-through console are standard on the other trims. Standard safety features now include stability control, front-seat side airbags and side curtain airbags. Notable options, depending on trim, include upgraded audio systems, a navigation system, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system and utility-enhancing cargo bed features. For those who anticipate pulling trailers, the SV Value Truck or SL Max Utility tow packages are also available.
The PRO-4X trim level adds equipment for serious off-roaders that include Rancho shocks, a lower final-drive ratio, skid plates, an electronic locking differential and 18-inch off-road wheels with aggressive off-road tires. Unique exterior and interior styling cues to differentiate the PRO-4X from the other Titan models are also included.
For power, Nissan offers only one combination: a 5.6-liter V8 connected to a five-speed automatic transmission. The V8 is rated at 317 horsepower and 385 pound-feet of torque. The transmission features a tow/haul mode for when the truck is used for pulling or carrying heavy loads. For every body style and trim combination, two- or four-wheel drive is available.
In Nissan Titan reviews, our editors have found it to be powerful and capable both on- and off-road. Downsides include a lack of additional powertrain choices and the absence of a heavy-duty model. The Titan has also been outclassed by newer competitors in terms of comfort and overall design. Still, we think Nissan's Titan is worth a look.
Used Nissan Titan ModelsThe current, first-generation Titan debuted for 2004, and these earlier trucks could be a good choice for a shopper searching for a used late-model pickup. The first couple of production years, in particular, outclassed domestic pickups in many ways. The most notable changes for the Nissan Titan came for the 2008 model year and included the addition of a long-wheelbase model, exterior and interior styling refreshes and new features. Models built for 2007 and earlier were available in one wheelbase length only, lacked the two different bed lengths for each body style and also had a reduced maximum payload.
It should be noted that stability control, side airbags and side curtain airbags were not standard on all Titans until 2010. Used shoppers should investigate whether the truck in question is equipped with them. Also, the current trim levels were introduced for the 2011 model year; previously, the Titan's three main trims were XE, SE and LE, though feature content was broadly comparable.
