SAN MARCOS, California — Honda is considering the stylish Honda S660 convertible, a small, affordable sports car, for its U. S. lineup, Edmunds has confirmed. The S660 convertible is considered a "mini" by Japan's car standards. The car is 2 feet shorter than the petite Mazda Miata MX-5 convertible. "We're looking at it intently for North America," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda, in a recent interview. Mendel said a decision to bring the car here has not been made yet. Mendel said the car is not intended to be a Miata MX-5 competitor. The S660 is equipped with a 63-horsepower, 0. 66-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine. In comparison, the Miata has a 155-horsepower 2. 0-liter four-cylinder engine. Several issues need to be addressed before a decision can be reached about importing the S660, Mendel said. It's got to serve a purpose from a brand standpoint," Mendel said. Honda previously sold the Honda S2000 , a two-seat, rear-wheel-drive roadster, in the U. S. Production ended in 2009. Honda has been working to raise the sporty performance perception of its vehicles and already has a couple of highly anticipated cars coming soon. The Civic Type R, a sporty hatchback, will be imported from Europe and added to the Civic lineup. At just more than 11 feet long, Edmunds notes that it’s a full two feet shorter than a small sports car like the Mazda Miata MX-5. It’s also two feet shorter than a Honda Fit, the brand’s smallest car in the current U. S. lineup. Those looking for a luxury-branded convertible with a low price tag should turn toward Audi's A3 Cabriolet. With a $36,525 starting retail price, including destination charge, the Audi A3 Cabrio comes with standard leather-covered seats and dual-zone climate control -- not found in other low-priced 2015 model year convertibles, such as the Chevrolet... Best of all, the A3 Cabrio ranks third best in fuel mileage among all U. S. convertibles, behind the much smaller Smart Fortwo Passion Cabrio and Mini Cooper convertible. The federal government says it gets 24 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway, and judging by the fuel-sipping nature of the test vehicle, those numbers are achievable, averaging just over the 28-mpg combined city/highway rating. Drivers who aren't interested in the muscle-car look of the Camaro and Ford Mustang will find much to like in the Cabrio, which, true to Audi custom, looks is business-like but with a sense of craftsmanship.
