BMW, Apple could rekindle courtship with an eye on car collaboration - Automotive News

FRANKFURT/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -- BMW and Apple may rekindle a courtship put on hold after an exploratory visit by executives of the world's top maker of electronic gadgets to the headquarters of the word's biggest seller of premium cars. Apple CEO Tim Cook went to BMW's headquarters last year and senior Apple executives toured the carmaker's Leipzig factory to learn how it manufactures the i3 electric car, two sources familiar with the talks told Reuters. The dialogue ended without conclusion because Apple appears to want to explore developing a passenger car on its own, one of the sources said. During the visit, Apple executives asked BMW board members detailed questions about tooling and production and BMW executives signaled readiness to license parts, one of the sources said. The carmaker says there are currently no talks with Apple about jointly developing a passenger car and Apple declined to comment. It is too early to say whether this will be a replay of Silicon Valley's Prometheus moment: The day in 1979 when Apple co-founder Steve Jobs visited Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center where the first mouse-driven graphical user interface and... The issue was discovered during a recent NHTSA-conducted side impact crash test, according to documents posted on NHTSA's website. In affected vehicles, rear-seat passengers could be at a higher risk of injury after a severe side impact, NHTSA said. To remedy this issue, additional energy absorption material will be installed between the rear interior side panels and the body of the vehicle. Today’s recall is an expansion of a previous recall filed in December, which covered 3,085 Cooper two-door hardtop cars from the 2014 model year. Source: www.autonews.com

Is Marchionne right? Let's find out - Automotive News

A few months ago, during a private lunch in Dearborn, Mich. , a high-level Ford decision-maker set the scene for the industry in stark terms: "It's getting too expensive to make cars. The business model of making cars is, in simple terms, showing cracks. We were fascinated a few months ago when FCA boss Sergio Marchionne made his now-famous PowerPoint presentation to the analyst community. It was his game plan for saving the industry. Whether we agree with Marchionne or not, and whether we think he was merely responding to FCA's particular issues, we were startled that the CEO of a global automaker would make such a candid and public critique of his industry. Over the next few months, Automotive News is going to put the industry under a microscope. It starts this week, when we host a roundtable in Detroit with current and past industry leaders. We're calling our series "Industry on Trial," and you will see it this summer in print, on autonews. com and on Automotive News TV. Our first installment of the series will publish Aug. Ford is moving into electric bikes, Mini is moving into car sharing, and General Motors is trying to squeeze an extra $1,000 of profit out of a Chevy Malibu by loading it with technology.
