The Mazda 3 is already a huge hit, but until now there hasn't been a performance version. That changes with the Mazdaspeed 3, which is targeted, according to chief engineer Tatsuo Maeda, directly at the Volkswagen GTI. Externally, the Mazdaspeed 3 gets subtle yet sporty upgrades to the grille and bumpers, and a rear roof spoiler and 18-inch rims. Tipping the scales at roughly 3100 pounds, the Mazdaspeed 3 is lighter than the GTI and boasts an advantage of 63 horsepower and 74 pound-feet over its German rival. Employing the same 2. 3-liter four-cylinder turbo unit as the Mazdaspeed 6, but with retuned intake and exhaust systems and a modified ECU that reduces torque levels in the first three gears, the Mazdaspeed 3 generates 263 horses at 5500 rpm and... Power comes on from 2500 rpm and stays hot all the way to the 6750-rpm redline. The linear torque response is more akin to that of a gutsy V-6 than a turbo four. Mazdaspeed takes its place amongst GTI and Si as an indicator that the car it's emblazoned on is designed for low-end sport driving. Mazdaspeed took the Mazda3, an already peppy and fun little hatchback, and tightened the suspension, dropped in a turbocharger, and gave it a limited slip differential. But with its four doors and hatchback, it remains as practical of a car as the Mazda3 on which it is based. Test the tech: Running to 60. After reviewing the Volkswagen GTI , a reader e-mailed us that the Mazdaspeed Mazda3 is a worthy competitor. So, as we had tested the GTI by doing zero-to-60mph timed runs, we decided to do the same with the Mazdaspeed Mazda3. The GTI had Volkswagen's fast-shifting direct shift gearbox (DSG), while the Mazdaspeed Mazda3 has a regular six-speed manual. Hillary Clinton made her "big announcement" on Sunday in a pre-recorded video, but what's got people riled up on the Internet is the new logo for her 2016 presidential campaign. Twitter users have quite the strong feelings about the flat-designed blue "H" with a red arrow running across left to right, and they're not holding back. Visual communication scholar Keith Kennery told ABC News today one explanation for the strong reactions to the logo is that people respond first to their senses -- what they can see, hear, smell, taste and touch. "That's why it's very important to have a good logo, because people have instant responses and feelings about what they see in their environment" said Kennery, who teaches at the University of South Carolina and is working on a book called... the red arrow is one of the logo's main problems, he added. "Red is a symbol for danger, and the campaign has a big and bold red arrow pointing right to the right that's dominating the whole logo," he said.
