Nowadays, we decided, a true enthusiast, a real purist, ought to have a Lotus 23 to drive on the streets, since that fantastic car is about as extreme—and pure—an example of sporting automobile as there is around. That was before we'd driven the Elan. Now, blanching at the prospect of trying to protect a 23 in modern traffic on one hand, and having sampled the joys of the Elan on the other, we'd like to make a substitution. The Elan very simply represents the sports car developed in tune with the state of the art. And it fits like a Sprite, goes like a Corvette, and handles like a Formula Junior. What you will get from a Lotus Elan that you aren't apt to be able to experience in a Junior, is the absolute joy of charging —under all sorts of conditions and in all kinds of circumstances. A combination of the very tiny exterior dimensions of the car, the great acceleration and stopping power, and the complete, reliable safety of it, makes hurrying into a pretty good sport in itself. The tiny roadster had clean, elegant lines, clever construction (fibreglass body, steel backbone chassis, wishbone suspension), plus design innovations such as pop-up headlights and body-moulded bumpers. The Elan weighed under 700kg, allowing its Ford Cortina-based 1. 6-litre DOHC four to push it along very rapidly indeed. it is surprisingly how slow fast cars used to be). SVRA: Best of yesteryear takes on Pocono - Racer

Rare is the day that we don't wonder what it would be like to see a Ginetta G4 racing a Lotus Elan at Pocono, and IndyCar fans attending this weekend's race will have the opportunity to answer that question for themselves. The SVRA Vintage Festival brings a packed schedule of historic racing to the weekend's billing, with a rich array of machinery spanning five decades set to do battle on the 1. 37-mile South-East configuration of Pocono's infield road course. Highlights will include a 60-minute, one-pitstop Vintage/Classic endurance race on Saturday morning, and a 90-minute, two-pit stop event for Historic GT/GTP/ALMS cars later that same day. Historic oval cars will also get an airing, with a selection of Indy Cars, Sprint Cars, Stock Cars and Modifieds lined up for a series of demonstration runs on the full IndyCar layout.
