Launched last year as the first “dedicated hybrid” from Toyota’s luxury brand, the 2011 Lexus HS 250h blends an attempt at Lexus levels of luxury with the gas mileage advantage of a hybrid-electric drivetrain. But it hasn’t done so quite as successfully as the 2011 CT 200h compact hybrid hatchback that followed it this year, and the HS 250h is presently a low-volume entry in the expanding Lexus lineup. The Lexus HS 250h offers some nifty technology and is EPA-rated at 35 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 34 mpg combined. It has a blunt nose, a high cowl, and slab sides, far from the grace of some of more elegant Lexus models. It leaves us wondering, frankly, exactly who it is that buys the HS 250h. The heart of the HS is a 147-hp, 2. 4-liter four-cylinder engine (as used in the Camry Hybrid), mated to Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system, including a pair of... More than 600 pounds of extra weight, compared to a Prius, keeps the HS 250h at modest performance levels unless you select the “Power” mode. Inside, the seats are mounted high despite the sedan’s low roofline, meaning that front passengers are tight on headroom and rear-seat riders are positively slouched. The HS 250h is a tall car with a very high cowl, giving it slab-sided styling and a blunt front with a long overhang. The mouse-like controller for the optional Lexus Remote Touch system that controls navigation and stereo sits under the driver's right hand on the console, and proves relatively intuitive to use. Toyota Recalling 2006-2011 RAV4, 2010 Lexus HS 250h For Rear Suspension Failure - The Car Connection

Toyota has just announced it will conduct a voluntary safety recall involving certain 2006 to early 2011 model year RAV4 compact SUVs and 2010 model year Lexus HS 250h passenger cars for a problem with the rear suspension that may pose a safety... , the recall involves some 760,000 Toyota RAV4s and 18,000 Lexus HS 250h cars. The Office of Defect Investigations (ODI) of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened its probe into the potential rear suspension arm assembly failure of 2006-2008 Toyota RAV4s in June 2012. UPDATE: NHTSA has issued an... For its part, Toyota says that the problem is the result of technicians not properly tightening lock nuts on the rear suspension arm during service for rear wheel alignment. Toyota said it is currently working on a fix for the problem and will notify owners when a remedy is available, instructing them to make an appointment with a Toyota or Lexus dealer to have the repairs made at no charge.
