However, you just can’t bring yourself to buy a Toyota Prius, the ubiquitous set of wheels for saving the Earth. You want fuel savings and low emissions without people thinking David Suzuki is your personal hero, but don’t fret: There are normal-looking sedans with hybrid powertrains on the market that will save both your fuel costs and your guilty conscience. Along with gasoline- and diesel-powered versions, the Volkswagen Jetta can also be found with a hybrid system, up to around 2013 with these prices. Visually, it’s nearly identical to its siblings, and although it weighs about 50 kilograms more with the battery and electronics, with 170 horsepower, the Jetta Hybrid is a fun car to toss around. Along with the Prius, Toyota offers the mid-sized Camry in a hybrid version, available up to around 2011. It looks like the regular Camry and, as such, is on the drab side – the biggest discernible difference being a slightly smaller trunk space. And it's evidence that even Lexus can make product missteps, and that not every hybrid that Toyota or Lexus rolls out is destined to be a sales success. The official nod from Lexus—to Edmunds' Inside Line —follows months of speculation that the HS 250h would be discontinued sooner rather than later. Earlier this week, at a preview event that might have had something to do with the upcoming ES, at least one Lexus official had dodged the question, indicating that the HS would be “around for a little while. Lexus initially hoped to sell 30,000 HS sedans per year, but very early on after the model's launch, in summer of 2009, there were signs that the HS might not come close to that. Lexus sold about 6,700 HS 250h models in the later months of 2009 but then moved only 10,663 of them (according to Automotive News ) in all of calendar-year 2010—and only 2,864 in all of 2011.
