First Look: 2016 Jaguar XF-S - Driving

PAMPLONA, Spain — With the launch of its all-new, second-generation XF at Pamplona, Spain’s Circuito de Navarra, Jaguar becomes the first mainstream automaker to build all its cars out of aluminum. With the demise of the steel-framed XK, the new XF joins the long-aluminized XJ, the recently-introduced F-Type and the being-shipped-next-year XE to be made entirely (or, in the case of the XF and the XE, about 75%) of aluminum. All things being equal, of course, lighter means both faster and more fuel efficient, good news for those shopping the new supercharged XF as it weighs a not-insubstantial 120 kilograms less than the outgoing V6 XF (a diesel four-cylinder version,... So, according Rob Filipovic, product planning manager at Jaguar Land Rover North America, the aluminized 2016 V6 is nine per cent more fuel efficient than its steel-bodied predecessor and, more impressively, four per cent more frugal than last... Even the 340-hp version of Jaguar’s supercharged V6 easily breaks the six-second mark, impressive for something that is supposed to serve as the entry-level XF, at least until the promised four-cylinder 2. 0L turbodiesel arrives. The key to the XF’s vigor is its aluminum-intensive body, shared with the new XE. The old Jaguar XF was no slouch, but it made do with very old bones that dated back to the old S-Type. The 2016 model loses some 265 pounds over the last model and, just as important, is 28 percent stiffer. The 2016 Jaguar XF will launch in the U. S. with only a 3. 0-liter supercharged V-6 rated at 340 hp or 380 hp, depending on whether you get the base or XF S variant. Performance is brisk: 0 to 60 mph in as little as 5. 0 seconds for the XF S AWD (5. 1 for the RWD model). Jaguar’s new Ingenium engine family should be ready by next year, at which point we can expect to see a new turbocharged inline four. Our test car, an XF S AWD, isn’t happy out here. The automatic transmission responds too slowly to kick down orders, and the all-wheel-drive XF-S we were driving liked to chew its front tires. To add insult to injury, the air-conditioning packed up after two laps, and a couple of laps later the driveline switched to limp-home mode. The XF feels far better on the winding mountain roads of the picturesque Basque country. Charging through a set of sweepers where certain rivals would roll or understeer too much, the Jaguar XF, particularly the rear-wheel-drive version, is capable and inspiring. I have to admit I was somewhat underwhelmed when I first laid eyes on the revamped Jaguar XF at its New York motor show global reveal in April this year. Yes, the new XF isn’t a radical departure from its forerunner, but there’s no denying it’s a handsome, well-proportioned and thoroughly contemporary medium-large saloon. But this isn’t just a beauty contest, and buyers in the keenly contested executive express segment also eye several other attributes. It’s in these areas that the new XF has made the biggest gains. This alone has helped trim up to 190 kilograms (depending on model variant) from the car’s girth, and enables it to undercut its nearest competitor by 80kg. Basic physics dictate that when you reduce a car’s weight, it accelerates and stops...
