Even a full-size passenger car is limited in its capacity, so a large SUV is in the cards. And it can’t get much larger than the Infiniti QX80. it’s longer than the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator, two other behemoths in its class, and is one of the most imposing vehicles on the road. But as large as the QX80 is in stature, it matches that in luxury. Easily one of the more beautiful interiors of any car, the seats are – of course – huge, and extremely comfortable and cosseting, covered in the most supple leather. The level of technology on this Limited model is on a grand scale, too, with options such as built-in theatre monitors behind the front seats and predictive automatic emergency braking. With captain’s chairs in the second row, this gargantuan effectively carries around four people in grand luxury. (Granted, there is a more practical bench seat available for the second row. ) And with the electronically operated back row deployed, cargo space shrinks to 470 litres, so no hockey bags or multiple sets of luggage with a full load of people. This is a 2,671-kilogram beast, and yet it takes corners without bobbing or diving, with an overall ride that is composed and smooth, thanks to Infiniti’s optional Hydraulic Body Motion Control System. The 2015 Infiniti QX80 is still a huge hunk of metal. Overwhelming stature The high SUV seating position for the driver offers a commanding view of the road ahead. As a fan of low-slung sports cars and roadsters, even I have to admit that being able to see farther down the road or to keep an eye on the two or three cars ahead of the car ahead of me is nice. According to Infiniti's math, you have three seating positions on the third row. Giving credit where due, those two reasonably sized adults will be reasonably comfortable for a short trip, but I wouldn't recommend anyone with a chassis larger than my 5-foot, 10-inch frame attempt it. Adding a bit of convenience to the luxury... By holding a button in the rear storage area, the owner can fold the third row bench flat, expanding the storage area. The second row also folds forward with a more conventional lever to create a mostly flat loading floor that extends from the tailgate the the front seat backs. Especially in this less-than-$3-per-gallon economy, full-size luxury SUVs have been cash cows for automakers, and Infiniti’s enormous QX80, while not the newest design on the block, is up 20 percent in sales this year despite prices ranging from... Granted, the luxury package added an instant $10K to our loaded QX80, but man, it’s positively gorgeous inside. From a quilted leather throne that feels about 9 feet high, the driver surveys what appears to be a full 4x8 sheet of matte ash punctuated with leather and brushed metal. The passenger seat, over in its zip code, gets a similar view, while the second-row seats are heated, individual buckets with a massive center console and rear-seat entertainment screens.
