Over the last couple of years, Mercedes has been acting like a company with something to prove. Pilloried during the DaimlerChrysler era for going cheap in brand-critical areas, the company has moved to re-instill the feeling of fundamental Benziness to its automobiles. Not content to chop the top off of the S coupe and add some underbody bracing, Benz seriously re-engineered the underside of the cabrio. New aluminum longitudinal rails, cast in a die around a sand core, take the place of steel units, the rear portion of the floor is also now aluminum, and the rear bulkhead is comprised of aluminum and magnesium components. Mercedes claims that interior sound levels will be low with the roof raised, while its Aircap wind blocker keeps buffeting to a minimum with the top lowered. In the event of a rollover, the pop-up roll bars are now deployed via pyrotechnic charge rather than spring bar. And Mercedes would like you to note that “in keeping with the S-class cabriolet's high design quality, there are no [visible] tear lines in the paneling behind the rear head restraints. Toyota's Scion division previewed a new subcompact sedan, the iA, and a crossover, the iM, to expand its offerings aimed at younger, quirkier buyers. Twelve years after Scion launched its first vehicles, the xA and xB, the millennial-focused brand is struggling to hit the 100,000-per-year U. S. sales goal it set for itself. Currently dealers offer the sporty FR-S coupe, the less expensive tC coupe and the boxy wagon-like xB. The two models each offer more doors -- the iA is a sedan, while the iM hatchback actually offers a fifth opening in the rear. The iA starts at $15,700 with a manual transmission and $16,800 with an automatic. Powered by a 1. 5-liter four-cylinder, 106-horsepower engine, the iA is rated by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency at 32 miles per gallon in city driveway, 42 on the highway and a combined 37 m. p. g. for the automatic package. The iM is slightly bigger, has an 1. 8-liter four cylinder, 137-horsepower engine with either a manual or automatic 6-speed transmission. It comes with eight standard airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag and a front passenger seat cushion airbag.
