S. vehicle sales plunged during the recession and China easily surpassed the U. S. as the world's... Sales figures for August released Tuesday by Sweden's Volvo Cars tell the story: Volvo's U. S. vehicle sales jumped 18. 3 per cent as the new XC90 SUV went on sale, and they rose 6. 5 per cent in Europe. But its sales in China plunged 10 per cent. Total sales fell less than 1 per cent to 1. 58 million, but primarily because sales for a late-arriving Labor Day weekend will be included in September figures. Labor Day is typically a big sales weekend as dealers hold model year-end clearance sales. For August, Ford reported a 5-per cent gain as sales of its new F-150 gained steam, and Fiat Chrysler's sales rose 2 per cent thanks to strong demand for Jeep SUVs. WASHINGTON — Hyundai is recalling 225,000 2001-'06 Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs because the affected vehicles may experience front coil spring corrosion from road salt, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. "If the front coil spring fractures due to corrosion, it could cause the coil spring to make contact with the tire, possibly puncturing the tire and increasing the risk of a vehicle crash," NHTSA said in its summary of the problem. Hyundai has received approximately 1,200 warranty claims regarding corrosion of the coil spring, approximately 90 of which have additionally alleged contact with the tire. The affected Santa Fes were built from March 31, 2000 through February 15, 2006. Hyundai dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the coil spring. Deal struck with keeper Greg Fountain, tank brimmed and yellow coats/breathalysers/other French road trip accessories packed, it was time to say bon voyage and head for the ferry. Packing a Santa Fe filled me with fear at first. I was surprised by how high the boot was, but then I whisked out the fake floor, discarded the polystyrene storage tub beneath and realised I could stash loads of clobber underneath the regular boot. Driving down to Portsmouth, the Santa Fe shrugged off the full load. This is one relaxed car, its auto 'box suited to the demands of a long, lazy road trip. Hyundai does this well.
