  Not so long ago, heavy-duty pickups were agricultural workhorses with all the amenities of a covered wagon. While the segment’s continual one-upmanship ensures that each new iteration is larger, tougher, and more sophisticated than the heavy-duty truck that came before, GMC’s latest Sierra 2500HD Denali incorporates levels of refinement heretofore unheard of around the job site.

  The 2015 GMC Sierra HD and Chevrolet Silverado HD share their light-duty brethren’s improvements, and GMC says one out of every four HD trucks it sells is a crew-cab-only Denali model. The Denali amplifies the lesser Sierra’s industrial-chic styling with additional touches inside and out, and you can’t miss its reflective, rearview-mirror-clogging grille.

  From behind the wheel, the view is commanding, despite a cabin that en­velops you even more, is easier to climb into, and is more capacious in back. GM’s independent torsion-bar front suspension is still exclusive to the segment and delivers surprisingly accurate steering. This is handy both around town and if you’re towing. Our 2500-series 4x4 test truck had a 14,500-pound tow rating with the conventional hitch (a 3500-series Sierra tops out at 23,200 pounds with a fifth-wheel hitch).

  The HD’s most significant update is its vastly improved ride, a big achievement considering that the truck’s rear tires are filled to 75 psi and its leaf springs can support up to 4306 pounds of payload.

  

  A new interior addresses the aged design and dated electronics of the previous model and is mostly the same as that in the redesigned 1500-series trucks, with supportive seats and smartly arranged controls. The top-tier Denali features brushed-aluminum accents and additional soft-touch materials, as well as a long list of standard equipment, including a 360-hp, 6.0-liter gasoline V-8, heated and cooled seats, and eight-inch displays in both the cluster and center stack.

  While the example on these pages started at $54,835—nearly five grand more than a similar SLT model—it quickly ballooned to $64,630 with options. Accounting for the bulk of that is the $8845 Duramax Plus package, which includes the must-have 765-lb-ft, 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V-8 paired with the mandatory Allison six-speed automatic transmission, as well as GM’s vibrating safety seat and some e-nannies.

  

  The Duramax V-8’s 397 horsepower helped propel our 7660-pound truck through the quarter-mile in 15.9 seconds at 87 mph, quicker than comparable Ford and Ram pickups. Both of those competitors also offer upscale versions of their heavy haulers and are sure to respond to the Sierra HD’s improvements. Chevrolet, too, has even added a range-topping Silverado HD High Country to its lineup.

  But until a rival offers an optional lap pool in its bed, the new Sierra HD Denali is the benchmark for heavy-duty pickup-truck sophistication.

  Getting their grand reveal today at the Texas State Fair, the 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickups and their upline Denali siblings have been given a wide-ranging revamp that parallels the changes made to their corporate cousins, the 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500/3500 HD. While their all-new-for-2011 platform elements carry forward, the 2015 Sierra HD makeover process has given them a new look, new refinement and additional capability that includes enhanced towing and payload numbers. 

  As now, the 2015 Sierra HD set will be available in Work Truck, SLE and SLT models as well as premium Denali trims. Regular cab and crew cab are being joined by a new double cab configuration that replaces the current extended cab, and buyers will be able to choose either an 8-foot or 6.5-foot (crew cab only) bed. The exterior recasting embraces visual cues seen on the all-new 2014 GMC Sierra/Sierra Denali 1500 pickups but creates a look that's even bolder than their lighter-duty counterparts and more aerodynamic than the current Sierra HD family. While SLT and Denali models sport even more distinctive LED lighting elements and trim-specific brightwork/body color accenting, all Sierra HDs feature enhanced engine/underhood cooling capabilities that allow GMC's hardest working pickups to perform at their absolute best regardless of ambient temperatures or load conditions. 

  That kind of focused improvement also is evident in the new Sierra HD's cab design, which, like the 1500 series, now consists of nearly 67 percent high-strength steel for added rigidity and uses triple-sealed inlaid doors that help lower drag and interior noise levels. Rear seat access on all stretch variants also has been improved, thanks to front-hinged rear doors on the double-cab and longer rear doors on the crew cab. A similar kind of enlightened upgrading process was applied to the redesigned beds on the Sierra HD. In addition to gaining a convenient CornerStep bumper and built-in hand assists that ease access, the SLE, SLT and Denali all come with integrated bed tie-downs, under-rail LED auxiliary lighting and an EZ Lift-and-Lower tailgate while offering a factory spray-in bedliner.

  Like its exterior remake, the redesigned passenger compartment in the 2015 Sierra 2500/3500 HD family borrows much from the 2014 Sierra 1500. Beyond a more premium look and feel, that stylish and functional transformation brings a tidier dash configuration, better control layouts, a bi-level glovebox, numerous stow spaces, better overall isolation plus new seats that provide more comfort and afford nearly two inches of additional rear legroom on crew cab models. At Denali level, the feature set expands to include additional soft-touch surfaces and real aluminum trim as well as an exclusive 8-inch customizable driver display in place of the baseline gauge cluster, an 8-inch Color Touch navigation radio with Intellilink, Bose premium audio, leather upholstery with heated/cooled front buckets and five standard USB ports.

  On a more directly functional front, the 2015 Sierra 2500/3500 HD upgrading program also reaps impressive tangible benefits in the hauling and trailering realms. Although there are virtually no changes to super-stout frame with fully-boxed rails and duty-keyed suspension elements that underpin all Sierra HD configurations, every model - including dually variants -- now has StabiliTrak with Trailer Sway Control and hill start assist. They also feature better integration of the cruise control and Auto Grade Braking (or Diesel Exhaust Brake) that helps maintain more consistent speed and diminishes brake wear while towing in hilly terrain. All but the Work Truck also come with a rear-view camera and front/rear park assist. These new GMC HD pickups also will be available with segment-exclusive safety features including Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning with GM's Active Safety Seat, and Front and Rear Park Assist.

  Standard engine in all 2015 Sierra HD models is the familiar 6.0-liter Vortec V8 that makes 360 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. Capable of using regular gasoline or E85, it's backed by a 6-speed automatic transmission in both rear-drive and 4-wheel drive models and can be upfitted with a bi-fuel option that allows it to run on CNG (compressed natural gas). Those needing more capability can step up to the equally well-proven 6.6-liter Cummins Duramax turbodiesel that develops 397 horses but 765 lb-ft of torque. It's paired with an Allison 1000 6-speed automatic that features tap up/down shifting and a Tow/Haul mode. While engine output stats haven't changed, the improved cooling capability of these new Sierra HD models does contribute to significant increases in other key numbers relative to their 2014 counterparts. Maximum payload rises from 7,222 to a best-in-class 7,373 pounds while the Sierra HD's top conventional towing figure now jumps from 18,000 to 19,600 pounds, also a best-in-class figure. Finally, the maximum fifth-wheel tow spec rises from 22,500 to 23,200 pounds. 

  The 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 HD and 3500 HD pickups and their Denali offshoots are set to arrive in dealer showrooms during the first quarter of 2014. Pricing and other packaging details will be released closer to their actual on-sale date.

  2015 GMC Sierra Denali HD First Test The Broadest-Shouldered Butler Since Lurch

  

  All done up in black and chrome, the new Sierra Denali HD looks like it's wearing a tuxedo, but its burly stance and jacked suspension suggest it plans to work whatever formal event you have in mind. Indeed, when it arrived at our shop, we put it right to work. Its first task was to make a 360-mile run that included ascending the Davis Dam's 12-mile, 6-percent grade while carrying a ton of horse-stall mats in the bed. (Our Duramax crew cab 4x4 truck's 10,000-pound gross vehicle weight left 271 pounds for payload, so our lone driver and his social-media connectivity gear weighed in well within spec.) Our test equipment kept a watchful eye out for signs of laziness during the hill-climb event. We then hitched a 5-ton trailer to its Class IV receiver hitch and gave it another workout. (It's rated to tow 13,000 pounds off the back, 17,100 with a gooseneck or fifth-wheel hitch.).

  As with all heavy-duty pickup trucks, this one feels a bit jittery and uncomfortable riding around empty. It jounces with the nervous energy of a track star who longs to be running. L.A.'s infamous tilted slabs turn freeway rides into a hobbyhorse experience when a truck is empty, but stick a ton in the back, and this giant manservant gets right to work pummeling the road into submission. Beyond the ride improvement, the drivability, acceleration, and braking performance didn't feel noticeably degraded by the burden, though it must be noted that the Allison transmission is programmed to favor the highest possible gear selection, which can make the truck feel a bit lethargic compared with certain competitors (cough, F-Series SuperDuty). The GMC Sierra HD is a 2015 Motor Trend Truck of the Year contender - find out before long whether it has what it takes to win. Once on the Davis Dam, we conducted a "Frustration Test" that simulates being stuck behind some wanker going 50 in a 65-mph zone then fire-walling the go-pedal and accelerating to 70 mph to pass. The test was conducted numerous times, with the transmission's tow/haul mode engaged and disengaged, and we found it made no difference in this test, which took 8.9 seconds and 773 feet either way. That's roughly double the 45-65-mph rolling-acceleration rate required when the truck is empty and on level ground at low altitude (not that the latter makes much difference to this turbocharged oil-burner). Descending the grade, we were impressed with the way the cruise control integrates with the diesel exhaust brake to maintain a steady downhill speed, even when loaded. Next we hitched up a hefty 10,000-pound trailer. This it noticed. A lot. There was significant turbo lag off the line, and all acceleration times doubled or tripled from a quite reasonable 7.7 seconds to 60 mph and 16.0 seconds at 86.4 mph empty to a still-respectable 19.8 and 22.0 at 62.7 dragging the trailer. The tow/haul mode did make the rig accelerate a bit quicker in this case, altering the shift schedule slightly. Fun fact: Tow/haul mode also doubles the flash-to-pass feature's number of turn-signal blinks to six. We feel that trailers this heavy are probably best towed with a gooseneck or fifth-wheel, which simplifies maneuverability. (Reversing a long truck with a long rear overhang and a hitch behind the bumper is way trickier than reversing a gooseneck.) Bumps upset the rig more with the bumper-style hitch, as well, and handling generally seems to suffer considerably (though the StabiliTrak system now includes standard trailer-sway control). And while the reverse camera gives a good view of the hitch area, its low resolution and lack of a trailer-hitch alignment line (as the competition offers) made it difficult to place the truck in precisely the right spot to lower the trailer tongue onto the ball the first time without a spotter. As the chaperone of our long-term Sierra Denali, a 1500-series 5.3-liter doppelganger for this truck, I felt completely at home in the roomy, well-appointed, attractive interior, and I was impressed by this one's upgrades. These include the new-for-2015 4G-LTE Wi-Fi hot spot, the off-road inclinometer, and dash screens for engine-on and idle hours and diesel exhaust fluid level. The collision warning system is another welcome addition that doesn't seem too "nervous," and the vibrating "safety-seat" lane-departure warning system is useful in any vehicle that consumes this much of a lane. (It should be mandatory standard equipment on dualies.) Sure, you could save a fair chunk of change by purchasing the exact same functionality with a Chevy bow tie on the nose, just as you could easily employ a personal assistant in khakis and an Oxford button-down. The Sierra Denali is for folks who prefer a broad-shouldered butler.
