New 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 All Terrain Review: Did GM's long overdue revamp meet expectations?

GM took their time revamping their bread and butter, the Sierra and Silverado 1/2 ton trucks. Given such a long period between products, did they let us down?

2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab Expert Review

    By Matt Degen

    KBB Expert Rating: 7.8

Like its near-twin the Chevrolet Silverado, the slightly more upscale GMC Sierra arrives in fresh form for 2014 with more power and a well-designed interior blessed with the latest tech and safety features. The 2014 Sierra still spans a variety of trims and configurations to appeal to a broad range of pickup buyers, from a rather basic work truck to the leather-laden Sierra Denali. All benefit from new V6 and V8 engines that can pull more than their predecessors yet travel a bit farther on a gallon of gas. While it's no secret that brand loyalty is a key buying factor in a segment that includes the Ford F-150, Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra, the Sierra distinguishes itself from rivals with surprising creature comforts and potent powertrains.

    You'll Like This Car If...

The 2014 Sierra's innovative powertrains and handsome aesthetics should appeal to longtime GMC fans and tempt buyers new to the brand. In just one of many "mine is bigger" battles in the half-ton truck market, the 2014 Sierra's 12,000-pound max tow rating is expected to be king – at least for now.

You May Not Like This Car If...

The 2014 Sierra's 6-speed automatic transmission isn't as smooth as the Ram 1500's available 8-speed. There's also no denying that this is indeed a full-size truck whose big dimensions are noticeable every time you pull into a small lot or garage. Smaller, more maneuverable alternatives are the Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma.

From its exterior and interior design to its three engine choices, the GMC Sierra is all-new for 2014. Gone is the slow-selling hybrid version.

Driving the Sierra 1500 Crew Cab

2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab Front angle view photo

Driving Impressions The 2014 GMC Sierra is a truck ready for work and play, with the power and creature comforts ably doing their part in both respects. In our test-drive of a...

... Sierra with the new 5.3-liter V8 engine, it felt capable in nearly every situation. On the highway, the Sierra is surprisingly quiet. Most road imperfections are absorbed well by the truck's suspension, though we were reminded of its rugged body-on-frame construction during one particularly bad stretch of the 405 freeway in Los Angeles. There, the Sierra bucked like a bronco, and it would not be our choice if driven daily on that type of road. Towing ability is a strong point. We had no problem hauling a 5,000-pound Airstream trailer up steep grades with the 5.3-liter engine, and appreciated that the available trailer brake controller is within easy reach of the steering wheel. The telematics system gets a solid B grade, but the rear-view camera could be higher resolution (especially if you routinely hitch up), and audio functions could respond faster.

    Favorite Features

CONNECTED INFOTAINMENTThe Sierra's available technology gives new meaning to "work truck." Higher trims include the IntelliLink touch-screen system to operate navigation, audio and more. We were equally impressed by its five (5!) USB inputs and an AC outlet that can keep a bounty of devices juiced and ready to play.

DRIVER ALERT SEATThis optional but important safety feature works with the Sierra's lane-departure and forward-collision warning systems by vibrating the seat to alert the driver of potential danger. Ingeniously, it can vibrate each side independently. If you drift to the left, for example, the left side of the seat vibrates.

2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab Details

2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab Dashboard, center console, gear shifter view photoInterior

With big buttons and knobs coated in rubber for easy grip even when wearing gloves, the Sierra's roomy interior is built with work in mind. Yet it also can be as luxurious as your checkbook is large, with features such as ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and communication ports that will outnumber most drivers' devices. Cab configurations include regular with a bench seat for up three passengers, double cab with seating for five or six, and crew cab with the most room for five or six. As should be expected in a big truck, the front seats are massive. Flip-up rear seats offer more cargo versatility.

    Exterior

2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab photo

GMC has wisely taken an evolutionary approach to the 2014 Sierra's freshened exterior. We'll dub it "contemporary macho." Like previous models, this full-size truck features blocky styling highlighted by swollen fender flares and a grille that would do a semi-truck truck proud. With the new styling come practical innovations like corner steps built into the rear bumper. These provide a foothold for bed access, and by design are covered to mitigate slipping in wet environments. Handgrips and available bed-mounted LED lights are other features we like. Bed lengths range from 5 feet, 8 inches to 8 feet. Double-cab models now have standard front-hinged rear doors for easier access.

    Notable Equipment

    Standard Equipment

The most basic 2014 Sierra is still pretty much that and includes features like air conditioning, cruise control, cloth seats, and an AM/FM radio with a 4.2-inch color display and USB/SD inputs, but no CD player, Bluetooth, or telescoping steering wheel. Step up to an SLE trim and you'll get a rear-vision camera, 6-speaker audio and 17-inch wheels made of premium aluminum instead of steel. SLT trims bring features like the 5.3-liter V8 engine, dual-zone climate control, an 8-inch touch-screen command center, power-adjustable pedals, and leather-appointed seats. Foremen will appreciate the Sierra Denali's 20-inch chrome wheels, navigation system, Bose audio system, and leather-clad front bucket seats.

    Optional Equipment

Add-ons are available across the entire 2014 Sierra lineup to make it more functional and comfortable. All Sierras can be equipped with 4-wheel drive instead of the standard rear-wheel drive. Those seeking the most power and towing capability should look to the 6.2-liter V8 available on Sierra SLT and Denali models. Other options of note include the Driver Alert Package with lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert, plus front and rear park-assist. The All-Terrain Package includes an off-road suspension with Rancho shocks, an underbody shield and 18-inch wheels. Interior comforts include heated and cooled front seats, navigation, a power sunroof, and a rear-seat entertainment system.

    Under the Hood

2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab Engine photo

Three engine choices are available on the 2014 GMC Sierra: a 4.3-liter V6, 5.3-liter V8, or the top-dog 6.2-liter V8 available for SLT and Denali models. All are linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission and have laudable towing capacity, including the V6's max of 7,200 pounds. On the other end is the 6.2-liter V8 that can pull up to 12,000 pounds. With the ability to tow 11,500 pounds and a highway rating of 22 mpg, the 5.3-liter V8 is the middle child in GMC's new engine lineup and offers a good balance of power and efficiency. All the engines use technology such as direct injection and Active Fuel Management, which allows them to run on fewer cylinders and thus use less fuel. The engines can run on regular unleaded gasoline or E85.

    Pricing Notes

With the Sierra's wide range of configurations come a wide range of prices. A base, regular-cab 2014 Sierra has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $25,085. Double-cab models start at $29,110, while Crew Cab models begin at $33,210. Of course, start climbing trim levels and adding options, and these prices can climb by tens of thousands of dollars. A fully-equipped Sierra SLT or Denali, for example, can easily break the $50,000 mark. The Sierra's starting price is in line with that of the Ford F-150, Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra, while the Nissan Titan (available in King Cab and Crew Cab only) starts around $30,000. Before buying, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying. The Sierra's resale value is projected to be in line with that of its domestic rivals and the Nissan Titan, but behind that of the segment-leading Toyota Tundra.

  • 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 First Drive – Review – Car and Driver

Identical twins can be hard to tell apart, but it gets easier when they’re wearing name tags. Maybe that’s why GM attaches big Chevrolet and GMC badges on its pickup-truck twins, the Silverado and the Sierra.

The Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra aren’t quite identical, but engines, transmissions, chassis, and most of the sheetmetal are shared. What’s obviously different is the front-end styling. The Sierra replaces the Silverado’s stacked headlights with simpler, classier-looking small projector-beam units that are accented with LEDs on the top-dog SLT trim level. The grille, the front bumpers, the fenders, and the aluminum hood are unique to the Sierra. Black plastic trim around the fender wells and a chrome accent along the base of the side windows are more Sierra tells.

Aside from the GMC badging, the interior décor of the Sierra is, again, nearly identical to that of the bow-tie truck. Aluminum trim on all versions of the Sierra replaces what’s silver-colored in the Silverado, and wood accents are peppered throughout the top-spec SLT interiors.

    Direct-Injected V-8

With those few differences, it’s not surprising that the Sierra acts just like the Silverado. The 355-hp, 5.3-liter V-8 broadcasts the same mellow V-8 soundtrack here as it does in the Chevy. Even without provoking the throttle, the 383 lb-ft of torque give an apology-worthy shove. We recently tested a Silverado LTZ crew cab equipped with the 5.3-liter, and it returned a 0-to-60 time of 6.7 seconds. We have no reason to doubt that a comparably equipped Sierra would accomplish the task in the same time.

Cruising on the highway, the 5.3 switches to V-4 mode to help save fuel. In two-wheel-drive guise, the Sierra V-8 returns an EPA-estimated 16 city mpg and 23 highway. Four-wheel-drive versions with the V-8 manage 16/22 mpg. For those interested in a little more economy at the expense of some power, there’s finally a credible V-6 option from GM. GMC hasn’t released any EPA fuel-economy estimates yet for the six; we’ll let you know as soon as it does.

    Six Serious Cylinders

The standard 4.3-liter V-6 has been thoroughly redone. Not just a light nip and tuck, the engine has undergone a Michael Jackson–grade transformation. It might be distantly related to the Vortec 4300 that powered Chevy Astros and GMC Safaris when “Thriller” was still a hit, but the performance and the refinement are in line with that of 21st century V-6s. The 90-degree bank angle remains—a reminder of the engine’s V-8 roots—but it has been enhanced from top to bottom with variable-valve timing, direct fuel injection, and cylinder deactivation. Power is up by 90 horsepower, and torque rises to 305 lb-ft, an improvement of 45 lb-ft over last year’s 4.3-liter V-6. Remember the Syclone and Typhoon supertrucks? The new naturally aspirated 285-hp 4.3-liter makes five more horsepower than the turbocharged 4.3-liter V-6s could muster.

Even lugging the heavy crew-cab version, the V-6 provides what feels like sub-eight-second runs to 60 mph. Unlike the smaller-displacement V-6s from Ford and Ram, the 4.3-liter has good low-end grunt and consequently feels less strained than the competition. The car-derived Ford 3.7-liter V-6 and Ram 3.6-liter V-6 both make nearly 305 horsepower, but they fall short of the Sierra’s figure. The V-6 Sierra can tow 7200 pounds, which is 500 more than the V-6 Ford and 700 more than the V-6 Ram. This GM V-6 was designed from the git-go for truck use and is essentially a small-block Chevy V-8 with two fewer cylinders.

The rest of the Sierra experience is, not surprisingly, pure Silverado. No matter what engine is under the aluminum hood, both pickups have a quiet demeanor, an occasionally choppy but otherwise soft ride, and a smaller feel from behind the wheel than that of those big-rig-emulating competitors. The Sierra’s steering is accurate and doesn’t require constant corrections. A firm and confidence-inspiring brake pedal is almost sports-car-like, and the braking distances recorded by the Sierra’s Chevrolet analog were class-leading.

Crew cabs are arriving at dealerships now, extended-cab models soon will follow, and the regular-cab version will debut by the end of the summer. Two-wheel-drive Sierra crew cabs start at $33,210; an equivalent Silverado opens at $32,710, but the Chevy lacks a few features, such as steering-wheel audio controls and an eight-inch touch screen, that justify the cost differential. Even discounting the small bump in standard equipment, the Sierra strikes us as the more attractive of the two GM full-size pickups. If you look hard enough, one twin will always be the better-looking one.

  • 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Photos and Info – News – Car and Driver

This past year has seen Ford and Ram redesign or extensively update their full-size F-150 and 1500 pickup trucks, and now comes along an all-new iteration of the GMC Sierra for 2014 to take on the new domestic competition. The Sierra is one of two pickups in GM’s arsenal—the other is the Chevrolet Silverado, a truck with which GMC’s latest Sierra 1500 again shares nearly all of its DNA. Fittingly, the two GM rigs made their debuts alongside one another, but the Sierra now boasts the longest list of standard features ever for a full-size GMC truck, as well as the Chevy’s updated chassis, all-new engines, and freshened styling.

    All-Terrain Looks, Silverado Goods

Speaking of looks, even though the 2014 model might not mark a huge stylistic break from the outgoing truck, it’s darn attractive and further differentiated from the Silverado than Sierras past. Okay, so the Sierra’s flanks and tail still are nearly identical to the Silverado’s, but the front-end look is markedly different. The GMC’s headlights and grille are more cleanly designed than the Chevy’s, and the overall styling appears to have been pulled straight off of the butch Sierra All-Terrain HD concept from a few years ago. Every Sierra comes standard with a chrome grille surround and projector-beam headlights.

Like the Silverado, the new Sierra gets an aluminum hood (saving 17 pounds versus its predecessor), doors that are inset into the body sides instead of wrapping onto the roof, and aerodynamics-aiding underbody cladding and rear-wheel spats. The chassis is again fully boxed with a hydroformed front section, but it supports a front suspension that incorporates aluminum for some of its components. GMC swapped the old Sierra’s hydraulically assisted steering rack for a new electrically boosted setup, a move the company says saves fuel and improves drivability.

The Sierra’s interior is massively improved, with butch new aesthetics (shared with the Silverado, go figure) and more soft-touch materials than before. Buyers can specify an aluminum-trimmed cabin, the latest version of GMC’s IntelliLink infotainment system, optional heated cloth or leather seats, an eight-inch central touch screen, and a 4.2-inch driver information display in the gauge cluster. On the safety front, the Sierra is now available with camera-based forward-collision alert and lane-departure warning systems; the driver aids are paired with a vibrating Driver Alert Seat cribbed from Cadillac. The seat can alert the driver of impending collisions via vibrations, but it can be turned off, leaving traditional audible alerts to signal danger.

    Two Small-Blocks, Plus Three-Quarters of a Small-Block

GMC has endowed the 2014 Sierra 1500 with three all-new engines: A pair of small-block V-8s and a V-6. The two V-8s—a 5.3-liter and a 6.2-liter—belong to GM’s latest Gen V eight-cylinder small-block family, while the 4.3-liter V-6 is derived from the same architecture. All three engines feature aluminum blocks and heads, direct fuel injection, and come standard with cylinder-deactivation tech. Fuel-economy and output figures are forthcoming, but GM says its new truck engines are brawnier than before. (The old V-6 made a pitiful 195 hp, while the outgoing 5.3-liter V-8 produced 315 hp; the new 6.2 likely is intended to take on the Ford F-150’s optional 6.2-liter V-8, which makes 411 hp.) The previous-gen Sierra’s 4.8-liter V-8 is gone, as is its base four-speed automatic; a six-speed auto now is standard across the board.

In addition to the choice of engine, the 2014 GMC Sierra continues to offer truck buyers a host of cab, bed, and driveline options. Regular-cab Sierras can be had with either a 6.5- or 8-foot beds; extended-cab Sierras come only with the 6.5-foot bed; and crew-cab models now offer the 6.5-foot bed in addition to the 5-foot, 8-inch unit available last year. GMC—and Chevy—are introducing a novel step built into each corner of the rear bumper this year; the indent, which makes the bumper look pre-dented, affords easier access to the bed regardless of the tailgate’s position. Finally, extended-cab Sierras now see their rear doors hinged at the B-pillar, as opposed to being rear-hinged as they were last year, and buyers can spec their rigs with either two driven wheels or four.

The 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 models go on sale early next year. Look for final output figures for the engines, fuel-economy data, and pricing to surface closer to the truck’s on-sale date.
