  OverviewLike the standard Sierra 1500, the new-generation Denali features subtle, evolutionary styling changes such as a reshaped hood, fresh taillights and oversized square fender flares. A chrome grille, 20-inch chrome wheels, stainless steel exhaust and body-color bumpers distinguish the Denali from the rest of the Sierra 1500 lineup and give it a sophisticated, upmarket look.

  Beneath the exterior lies a stiffened frame, a retuned suspension and a new electric power steering system. Thanks to these revisions, the Denali possesses a better-controlled and more comfortable ride along with more predictable handling than before.

  The Denali's cabin is marked by a contemporary new design and a host of premium amenities like heated and cooled front seats, a heated steering wheel, a navigation system and a Bose audio system. GMC's IntelliLink infotainment system is fitted as standard; accessed through an eight-inch touchscreen in the center stack, it integrates all entertainment and navigation functions and offers access to smartphone-based apps like Pandora radio and Stitcher radio.

  The system can be controlled through dashboard knobs, steering wheel buttons or the eight-inch touchscreen, and there's also a voice recognition system for hands-free calls, destination entering, song selection and more. Its "natural language" functioning can recognize a staggering number of phrases - effectively eliminating the need for the clunky and cumbersome memorized commands.

  A number of key revisions ensure that the cabin is sufficiently quiet for even whispered voice commands. These include triple-sealed doors, acoustic-laminated glass, lined front wheel wheels and smaller exterior mirrors, while shear-style body mounts help to quell noise and mellow out the ride.

  In order to set the Denali apart from the standard Sierra, the truck comes equipped with an exclusive eight-inch Customizable Driver Display that can show things like audio or navigation information right in the instrument cluster.

  Powertrain LineupThe Denali is offered with the choice of two strong V8 motors, both of which blend an old-school pushrod design with modern technologies like direct injection, variable valve timing and a cylinder deactivation system.

  The entry-level mill is a 5.3-liter V8 with 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. For power-hungry types, there's the optional, Corvette-derived 6.2-liter V8 that churns out 420 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque.

  The 5.3-liter engine is linked to a six-speed automatic transmission, while the 6.2-liter benefits from a Hydra-Matic eight-speed automatic. Both rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations are available.

  Fuel economy for the 5.3-liter Sierra is rated at 16/23 city/highway mpg with RWD, while 4WD variants fare one mpg worse on the open road. The 6.2-liter truck is good for 15/21 mpg with RWD and 14/20 mpg with 4WD.

  Bodystyles, CapabilitiesUnlike the standard Sierra 1500, which is available in numerous different bed and cab combinations, the Denali is offered only as a four-door Crew Cab with a 5'8' bed.

  When properly equipped, towing capacity ranges from a maximum of 11,400 lbs. with the 5.3-liter to 12,000 lbs. with the 6.2-liter.

  The Denali offers a number of clever, practical touches, including steps mounted in the rear bumper that make getting into the bed a cinch, LED bed lights and an easy open/close feature allows the tailgate to be accessed using just a pair of fingers.

  Standard and Optional FeaturesThe Denali comes lavishly equipped with leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an eight-inch touchscreen display, a navigation system, a seven-speaker AM/FM/CD Bose audio system with two USB ports and an AUX input, Bluetooth connectivity, SiriusXM and HD radio, a rear vision camera, an eight-inch driver info screen mounted in the instrument panel, an EZ lift tailgate, LED running lights, cargo box LED lighting, power-adjustable heated exterior mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, real aluminum cabin trim and 20-inch chrome wheels.

  Two extra-cost packages are available. The Z71 off-road package adds specially-tuned chassis monotube Rancho shocks, hill descent control and a transfer case shield. The Driver Assist Package brings Lane Departure Warning and Forward Collision Assist (detailed below).

  Occupant SafetyAll Sierra models are equipped with dual front, front side and full-length side curtain airbags in addition to a tire pressure monitoring system and traction and stability control systems.

  Several new optional safety features are also available. The Lane Departure Warning system alerts the driver should the Sierra begin to drift into an adjacent lane, and the Forward Collision Alert system provides a warning if it detects an imminent collision with a vehicle or object up ahead. Notably, warnings can be conveyed via audible alarms or, more subtly, by a vibrating driver's seat.

  The base V6 engine in the 2015 Sierra 1500 delivers good power so long as your plans don’t include a lot of heavy towing or hauling, test drivers write. They add that the optional 5.3-liter V8 has generous power, and a 6.2-liter V8 engine is also available. Reviewers say a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission is paired to the V6 and 5.3-liter V8 engines. The 6.2-liter V8 comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission. At up to an EPA-estimated 18/24 mpg city/highway, the 2015 Sierra 1500's fuel economy is on par for the class.   The 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 is available in a three-seat Regular Cab configuration or Double and Crew Cab configurations, which both seat up to six. Rear-wheel drive is standard and four-wheel drive is optional. A 4.3-liter V6 engine is standard, while 5.3- and 6.2-liter V8s are optional. • GMC Sierra 1500 - Car and Driver

  When the grille on a 2014 Sierra Denali pickup first looms in your rearview mirror, you’re going to wonder one thing: Why is a chrome fireplace enclosure chasing me down the street? Okay, maybe you won’t wonder that. We did, but we must admit to aberrant architectural musings when confronted by square-shouldered rigs like this GMC pickup.

  So here’s something more automotive to ponder while you dim the rearview mirror to dowse the glare off the chrome: Did the driver shell out the extra $1995 to get the 6.2-liter V-8 engine upgrade from the standard 5.3? Because if he did, and he’s clever enough to engage four-wheel drive via the knob on the left side of the dashboard to make sure all 420 horsepower gets to the ground, that Denali—the trim that we tested—can be moving one mile per minute in 5.4 seconds, on its way to a 14.1-second quarter-mile at 99 mph. Those numbers would match up nicely with sports sedans like the Cadillac ATS and be more than sufficient to surprise the occasional pony car when the traffic signal turns green.

  Not a bad trick for only two grand more, a small bump relative to the ordinary 6.2-liter-optioned Sierra 4x4 SLT crew cab’s $48,100 price. Our wicked black Denali test truck started at $51,060 and had a few other options, including a $495 Driver Alert package (lane-departure warning, forward-collision alert, and a driver’s seat that vibrates to get your attention), a $995 glass sunroof, and a $230 trailer-brake controller, bringing the as-tested price to $54,730, or not quite $10 per pound.

  Since our Sierra Denali test truck weighed in at 5672 pounds and has the drag coefficient of, well, a fireplace enclosure, the quarter-mile sprint is pretty much the story on the performance front. It gets to 100 mph in 14.5, and holding the pedal to the carpet for four more seconds takes it to its 110-mph terminal velocity. Thanks to four-wheel drive, at least one of our testers reported “playing rally driver” on dirt roads while avoiding crash-congested highways after a late-winter snow, but neither the steering nor the brakes really invite such adventuring; it’s still about the engine.

  The “Corvette Engine”

  Truck people refer to this 6.2-liter V-8 as the “Corvette engine,” with no lack of encouragement from GM marketers happy to highlight the similarities. This strikes us as a little backward because, since forever, Corvettes have both benefited and been derided by sports-car purists for having highly tuned pushrod truck engines. Sharing the engineering and manufacturing costs across the mass-produced truck versions is what helps make a Corvette one of the world’s great performance bargains. Call it what you will, this latest 6.2-liter small-block, tuned here to deliver torque earlier and to cost less to build than a real Corvette engine, is gutsy and smooth and mates well with the six-speed automatic. We almost said the engine was quiet, too, but it’s notably louder if you stand outside, out of reach of the standard noise-cancellation technology in the cabin.

  Another modern enhancement, cylinder deactivation, turns the V-8 into a V-4 under light loads to conserve fuel. The transitions between modes are smooth and barely noticeable. The driver-information center in the instrument panel has an indicator light—pay attention to the light for a while, and it’ll train your fingers and ears to detect the difference (there’s a slight increase in coarseness in V-4 mode). It might also train your right foot to tread lightly enough to get better fuel economy than the 14 mpg we observed, smack dab on top of the EPA city estimate. By the way, premium-grade fuel is recommended but not required.

  Upwardly Mobile Driving Aids

  The 19.1-foot-long Sierra Denali we tested is easily maneuvered in traffic and parking situations, although it has a pretty big turning circle. The driver gets plenty of help from the backup camera and the warning systems in the optional Alert package, with warning lights, graphics, and haptic seat vibrations calling out nearby obstacles. You could save some money and just pay attention while driving, but consider that owning a pickup often means being asked to lend it to people with chores to perform—people who obviously don’t drive a big pickup all the time or they wouldn’t need yours. For owners who are generous that way, the warning system could be a good investment in maintaining friendships and peace in the family.

  At the test track, our truck stopped in 181 feet from 70 mph, about the same as the 5.3-liter V-8 Sierra tested earlier. This doesn’t compare favorably with luxury or sports sedans of like price, but it is respectable considering the dimensions and the two-and-three-quarter tons of Denali the brakes must deal with. Which you’ll never forget while driving, because the tall hood extending far ahead of you doesn’t drop away at all, the better to fulfill one’s Peterbilt fantasies, we suppose. Steering and handling? They’re fine. This deep into the 21st century, can we finally stop feigning surprise when trucks have carlike qualities?

  The 20-inch wheels and 55-section tires that come with the Denali trim don’t help with impact harshness over bumpy pavement. The ride can get a bit choppy when riding empty, but otherwise, the Denali badge comes with a lot of pain-reducing features such as heated seats and leather, wood, and metal trim (not all of it’s real, but the plastic bits are nicely finished). There are copious storage bins and plenty of ways to connect your gear. Dead center above the console, you’ll find no fewer than three USB ports, two 12-volt power outlets, and a 110-volt plug. Right above that are the climate-control knobs (yes, knobs!) and the eight-inch color touch screen for navigation, IntelliLink infotainment, and audio functions. There are knobs for audio volume and tuning, too, with redundant buttons on the back of the steering wheel (the front of the wheel has controls for the driver-information screen in the instrument cluster and for cruise control).

  We spent no small amount of time searching inside the big crew cab for an attribute that wouldn’t measure up in a luxury sedan with similar four-door, five-seat capacity, for some clunky telltale feature that would betray its workhorse origins. And we found one: Although the heated steering wheel finally gets a telescope function added to its tilt feature, the adjustments aren’t motorized. Imagine! One editor broke a thumbnail on the manual lever.

  Another issue: At night, the knobs that control the headlamps and 4WD functions are surrounded by lights that reflect, awkwardly, in the driver’s door glass right where you’re trying to look to see the outside mirror. They dim with the other interior lights, but the reflections remain unless you darken the cabin completely.

  For customers who opt for the Sierra SLT or Sierra Denali with the 6.2-liter V-8, the added costs of the bigger engine and related operating expenses likely won’t be deterrents. One thing’s for sure: Once you’ve gone Denali, it’s hard to imagine how you ever got by without all the toys.
