Mother Nature Tried To Ruin My Super Bowl Weekend, A 2015 GMC Sierra HD Saved It - GM Authority (blog)

One has to ponder the possibilities of what they could do with a 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 HD . Despite my best efforts of asking people if they needed stumps pulled, needed 2,800 lbs of whatever hauled across the state, needed 17,000 lbs of cattle... So, I collaborated with a few friends to go up north for the annual Rally America Sno Drift rally last weekend, which also happened to be Super Bowl XLIX weekend. The 2015 GMC Sierra HD 2500 HD was a 4×4 crew cab, with the proven 6. 6L Duramax diesel V8 in SLT trim and a standard bed. Watching my 5’8? frame getting in and out must have been hilarious to watch, with a lot jumping and pulling on handles in an effort to climb into the drivers seat. Like how a child attempts to fit in their dad’s shoes. Once inside, and once on the road, the massive 2015 Sierra HD could be mistaken for a jet. Accelerating gives way to a wonderful spooling song from the turbocharger, like a miniature version of the turbine on a Boeing. And streaming internet radio via our smartphones via either USB port or Bluetooth for five hours would have done major damage to any data plan, we had wifi, and the data was spared while we blared djent and prog metal the whole way up. Only when... In the morning, we would attend Sno Drift. Source: gmauthority.com

REVIEW: 2015 GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali 4×4 Crew Cab a luxury work truck that ... - Equipment World Magazine

Like a heavyweight kickboxer dressed out in a tux, the black 2015 GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali 4×4 looks stylishly strong with fierceness ready to be unleashed at a moment’s notice. That combination of style and raw power is what sets GMC’s Duramax-powered flagship apart from lesser-equipped heavy-duty Sierras. Built in Flint, Michigan, the 2500HD Denali is the trim-level anyone who wants to make the luxury work truck statement would find very appealing. GM’s vaunted 6. 6L Duramax, which is now making 397 horsepower and 765 lb. -ft. of torque, is backed by the same Allison 1000 six-speed automatic that has been the ideal powertrain marriage since they were paired up back in 2006. The... The Crew Cab 4×4 Denali I tested has the 3. 73 axle ratio that’s standard with the diesel option package ($8,845), as well as the optional 20-inch forged aluminum wheels ($850) shod with Goodyear Wrangler SR-A ($200) street tires. In comparison, those numbers are better than recent Ram and Ford 2500 diesel and gas 4×4 models we’ve tested, and best even the lighter GMC Sierra 1500 4×4 5. 3Ls we’ve run. • GMC Sierra 2500HD - Edmunds.com

GMC has long been a mainstay of American byways and highways. Originally used and respected by farmers, construction workers and small-business owners, GMC's hauler was a basic workhorse known for its reliability and longevity. More recent times have seen GMC's full-size truck adopt the name Sierra. And with a variety of body styles, powertrains and trim levels, the Sierra is as adept at serving as the weekday family car.

However, this is the 2500HD version we're talking about. Though "HD" has become a familiar pop-culture concept in recent years, rest assured that the HD part of GMC Sierra 2500HD does not, in fact, involve plasma or LCD TVs. In this case we're talking the old-fashioned meaning of HD: "Heavy Duty." As one of two GMC heavy-duty full-size pickups, the 2500HD is a true workhorse that adds big-league power, towing and hauling capabilities to its family-ready credentials.

Current GMC Sierra 2500HDThe GMC Sierra 2500HD is available in regular, extended or crew cab designs, with a long or short wheelbase, and with rear- or four-wheel drive. The extended and crew cab body styles are offered in four trim levels: Work Truck, SLE, SLT and top-of-the-line Denali. The regular cabin can only be had in Work Truck and SLE trims. Moving up through the ranks obviously adds more style and features, culminating in the top-shelf Denali.

Standard on all Sierra 2500HD pickups is a 6.0-liter V8 that makes 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque, paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. The burly Duramax 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8 that puts out 397 hp and 765 lb-ft of torque is optional. Its standard Allison six-speed automatic is well suited to towing and hauling large loads.

In a recent comparison test, GM's heavy-duty trucks came out on top thanks to superior all-around performance. Although multigenerational brand loyalty may dictate what heavy-duty pickup you take home, sticking with (or switching to) the GMC Sierra 2500HD would be a solid decision.

Used GMC Sierra 2500HD ModelsThe present-generation GMC Sierra 3500HD debuted for the 2007 model year. Originally, the 6.0-liter gasoline V8 produced 353 hp and 373 lb-ft of torque, while the 6.6-liter diesel V8 was good for 365 hp and 660 lb-ft. The gasoline engines' current output arrived for 2010.

More changes occurred for 2011 when the Sierra received an all-new frame along with new suspension components (for greater towing capacity and a smoother ride), a more potent turbodiesel engine cranking out 397 hp and 765 lb-ft (previously 365 hp and 660 lb-ft) and the debut of the ultra-plush Denali trim level.

The previous-generation Sierra 2500HD was sold from 2001-'06 and lived on one more year as the "Classic" for 2007. There was a heavy-duty package available for the light-duty Sierra 2500 in 1999 and 2000. That light-duty Sierra 2500 has been discontinued. In terms of updates, there were changes made to the exterior and interior styling for 2003, with further exterior tweaks for 2005. These trucks came in Work Truck (after '03), SL, SLE and SLT trim levels.

The standard engine was a 6.0-liter V8 that made 300 hp and 360 lb-ft of torque. There were two optional engines: an 8.1-liter gasoline V8 producing 340 hp and 455 lb-ft and a 6.6-liter turbodiesel producing 300 hp and 520 lb-ft. This diesel was upgraded in 2006 for more power and refinement and fewer emissions. It made 360 hp and a whopping 650 lb-ft of torque. These engines carried over for the Classic. A five-speed manual transmission was standard with the 6.0-liter V8, with a four-speed automatic optional. The 8.1-liter V8 and diesel engines came with either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic (which became a six-speed for 2006).

As with the current GMC Sierra 2500HD, we were always impressed by this generation's powerful engine lineup and substantial towing and hauling abilities. It was a reasonably comfortable truck for everyday use, but don't expect the plush ride of its light-duty siblings. Any of the three available engines will provide swift acceleration and ample towing power, but the diesel V8 is probably the best choice for those who tow heavy loads -- especially the more powerful 2006 Duramax. Our principal beef concerns the shoddy interior design, materials and build quality. GMC improved it gradually during its lifespan, but it was never quite up to snuff.

The previous-generation GMC Sierra 2500 ran from 1988-'98 with a significant refresh for 1995. It was known as the Sierra 2500 Classic for 1999 and 2000. Strengths of these pickup trucks include strong, durable powertrains, while weaknesses center on sketchy build quality and materials within the cabin.

  • GMC Sierra 2500HD - Car and Driver

GMC may be a truck brand, but its current luxury crossovers and the latest Sierra 1500 pickup push the boundaries of its utilitarian image. Fear not, because the 2015 Sierra HD proves that the brand’s toughest truck can retain its roughneck charm even while receiving a much-needed updating.

Assembled for initial drives on the outskirts of Phoenix, Arizona—alongside its blue-collar sibling, the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD—the new Sierra HD is more carlike than any four-ton pickup truck has a right to be. Yes, it’s still a Silverado twin underneath, with carry-over engines and frames, and that was enough for the previous-gen Chevy to grab first place in a heavy-hauling comparison test. Yet the trucks’ overall refinements make the most sense in the tonier GMC.

    Big-City Fixin’s

The Sierra HD’s industrial-chic styling works well with its blocky silhouette, with additional brightwork and details versus the Silverado, such as plastic trim guarding the wheel arches. GMC says one of every four HD truck buyers opts for the chromed-out Denali trim, which has received additional touches inside and out to further assert its top-dog status. Not that you can miss its reflective, rearview-mirror-clogging grille.

The various four-door, four-wheel-drive trucks we drove in Arizona were immense machines, yet the new cab design makes getting into and out of the captain’s chairs relatively easy—and less of a hike than in comparable Ford and Ram pickups. Double-cab Sierras (and Silverados) now have proper front-hinged rear doors for simpler rear-seat access, and crew-cab models gain larger rear openings and slightly more room in which to stretch out. And because the double cab now has a proper B-pillar, cab stiffness is improved, resulting in far fewer squeaks and shakes over rough terrain than with last year’s rear-hinged extended-cab models.

The view is commanding behind the wheel of the new truck, despite an ever-more-enveloping cabin. Even though the Sierra HD retains its surprisingly sharp and accurate steering, extending the light-duty truck’s polish to the big rig meant vastly improving its ride. The new suspension tuning can still accommodate up to 7374 pounds of payload, while eliminating the choppiness and related head toss common to unladen trucks. Along with significantly more sound insulation—including carpeted wheel wells—that makes the interior as hushed as a library, these monster trucks are more refined on the road than some luxury vehicles we can think of.

    Power Is Also Optional

The HD’s interior is largely the same as the Sierra 1500’s, which is slightly better trimmed and more expressive than the Chevy’s. The supportive seats are comfy for long hauls, the controls have good adjustability, and the ergonomics are smartly arranged. The GMC’s dizzying array of options range from heated-and-cooled seats and forward-collision warning to an 8.0-inch touch-screen monitor with navigation. Denali models feature all of that and more, including a secondary 8.0-inch display in the cluster with customizable settings.

Of course, the Sierra’s most noteworthy extra is the 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V-8 ($7195)—still rated at 397 horsepower and 765 lb-ft of torque—paired with the superb Allison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission ($1200). Although a 360-hp, 6.0-liter gas V-8 is still standard (and available with compressed-natural-gas capability for $11,000), our drive time was limited to the diesel engine, which felt as strong as ever. We’ll be testing the new trucks soon on familiar ground, but the most significant take-aways from our stint include the stunning power of the Duramax, even uphill with a 16,000-plus-pound trailer in tow, and the improved integration of the exhaust and transmission brakes on descents.

Prices for 2015 increase slightly with the added equipment, and they’re still aspirational: Most of the mid-level diesel trucks we drove were in the $50,000 range, with Denali 3500 models reaching $65,000. The Ford Super Duty and the Ram Heavy Duty offer similar takes on the upscale workhorse and are sure to counter the GMC’s latest improvements. But until then, the Sierra HD seems to be the new benchmark for heavy-duty sophistication.
